CLG: Opening Bell: Coffee, Cheese, Pork, Eggs!
Good afternoon,
Has spring sprung? It sure does feel mild for this time of year. After a mild winter, many perennial plants have already been growing for a few weeks. Take a look at the plants we have available for your garden: lemon balm, garlic, golden rod, Rose Campion, hellebores, Scarlet bee balm, and even Brad’s atomic grape tomato plants!
If you missed getting some of Maria’s barbecue pulled pork at market Friday, all is not lost. She now has her barbecue pork available in the frozen section. Very easy to thaw out for a quick meal. BYOB. Bring your own bun.
Mark your calendar: the 3rd annual plant sale at Bell Urban Farm on Tyler street. It will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 9 AM until 3 PM. Hundreds of varieties of flowers, herbs, and vegetable plants will be available.
Look in the Dairy category for newly listed cheeses! Marinated, feta, pimento…
If the weather holds mild this week, we may have some strawberries on the extra table this Friday. Come early! They won’t last long.
Flying C Ranch offers a great deal on their ground beef in bulk. Five 1-pound pkgs for only $24. Search the word “bulk” for more good deals.
We are normally ready for customers to start arriving around 3 PM if you happen to be out and in the area. Just text me to see if we’re ready.
Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Four instance, type in the word “sale” and see what pops up. We have almost 400 items available now!
Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!
And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)
The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

Wow! What a week this has been! We endured a frightening Spring storm, harvested and delivered your first main season CSA, attended the annual OAK (Organic Association of Kentucky) Conference, and concluded with a lovely farm tour led by a friend at Ashbourne Farms in La Grange, KY. If this email is arriving a bit later than usual it’s because we’re just now arriving back in Princeton. It’s been busy, but we’re excited to share a bit on what we’ve been up to.
To quell any fears, though the farm did suffer torrential rainfall and fierce winds, we were blessed to have dodged the hail. The tunnels suffered no permanent damage and storm repairs were fairly small. The worst of winter seems to be over and we are feeling pretty good beginning our outdoor planting. Harvest and delivery of CSA went well; we hope all of you who ordered enjoyed the bags you received. We welcome any feedback you might have, and really like seeing the pictures of what you make!
If you follow us on Facebook, perhaps you have seen some of our pictures from OAK. This Friday and Saturday, the Farm Team attended the Organic Association of Kentucky annual conference in Louisville. This was an awesome opportunity for education and networking. We attended lectures presented by leading farmer-experts in the nation on organic practices. Topics included winter production, regenerative soil health, and pollinator protection. We met some great people and reconnected with old friends. Most of all, we learned a ton. We are so excited to bring this knowledge back to West Kentucky and implement these ideas for the benefit of the farm and our environment.
Among old friends, we were able to connect with Alaina Tobbe Jenne who manages the organic vegetable production at Ashbourne Farms in La Grange, Kentucky. Like Patrick, she graduated from our very own Murray State University with a degree in Horticulture. She was kind enough to show us around the grounds of their production fields and tunnels. It’s always restorative to speak with other organic farmers. It reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles, but also to share our successes and exchange ideas that work well. We are grateful for this opportunity always.
Creamed Power Greens
INGREDIENTS
2 large bunches of Power Greens (about 1 1/2 lb.), center stems removed and leaves cut into ½-inch strips
Kosher salt
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 cup (about 6 ounces) thick-cut smoked bacon
Unsalted butter (if needed)
2 large shallots, finely chopped
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1½ teaspoons sweet paprika
2 cups whole milk
2 cups heavy cream
Freshly ground black pepper
As we arrive back to West Kentucky, we see an area where the ideals of restorative and organic agriculture are just beginning to take root. Through your support of our farm and participation in our CSA, you are helping these dreams become established. Our gratitude cannot be understated, and we look forward to sharing the bounty of this fruitful week of learning with you throughout the year.
Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

Nom Noms Dog Treats: Samples Available this week during order pickup on ‘The Porch’ My name is Sandy, I’ve done dog rescue since I was a kid. I started the dog treat business 6 years ago when all those treats were killing dogs and making others sick. I wanted to provide something safe and tasty to my rescue. Once I saw how much others liked my doggie treats I went into business. I do this to not only make a living but to provide free spay/neuters to cut down on all the dogs who end up in shelters or worse. I love being able to provide healthy, safe, yummy treats while helping the pet overpopulation problem. I make them gluten/wheat free so almost all dogs can eat them. 4 ingredients in each, pure and simple ingredients.
Caney Fork Farms: Our Winter Season schedule with the Market is monthly, next times will be March 25th, returning weekly in April 2020.

Coronavirus Common Sense
Market Chitchat
DON’T PUSH THE PANIC BUTTON
Every year or so it happens – a new type of virus or flu and lots of media coverage about it. The most recent, novel coronavirus, has taken more than 3000 lives worldwide with very few cases reported in the United States, at least so far. With the deaths and worldwide attention though it would be very easy to fall into panic over the whole matter.
The problem with this one is that it’s so new. It has become dangerous very quickly because it is a first-of-its-kind type of coronavirus and all humans do not have immunity built up to fight it.
Most deaths (in China where the virus originated) have occurred where there has been prolonged contact, such as with health care professionals or family members serving as a caregiver. Because of this use of masks is recommended for health care professionals, caregivers and those with disease symptoms, but are not needed for the general public. Indeed, US Surgeon General Dr Jerome Adams tweeted on Saturday, “Seriously people – STOP BUYING MASKS!”

So what can the average person do?
*Wash your hands as much as you can, in particular before you eat anything, before you make food for other people and after you use the restroom.
*Use hand sanitizer when you just can’t wash. It’s not as good as washing but better than nothing. If you don’t like purchased hand sanitizers there are great dyi sanitizer recipes out there that use essential oils.
*Don’t touch your face. Every time you touch a door handle and then scratch your nose, you are susceptible to contracting viruses. If you need to scratch your nose or eyes, do it with a tissue then dispose of the tissue and wash your hands again.
*Disinfect and clean your home. Use isopropyl alcohol or disinfecting wipes to clean countertops and common areas, especially the surfaces where you eat and spend the most time.
*Limit the amount of time spent in crowded public places.
*Avoid people who are sick, including those who are coughing or presenting symptoms.
*Be sure you have plenty of the medicines you routinely take so that you can avoid trips out of the house to get them.
*Eat a healthy diet to boost your immunity. Try to include leafy greens like kale, spinach, collard greens, turnip greens and mustard greens. Also, get plenty of rest, and avoid stress.
*Take large doses of Vitamin C
*Use some form of elderberry to boost the immune system
In short, think about what you’re doing and use the same common sense we need be using with the common cold.
MARKET CHITCHAT
MEAT – It was so great to have Casablanca back from a family trip and Ricter Farms relisting pork after a long absence this week. Your Market Manager was able to bless a women’s conference via this “come back for more” keto breakfast casserole featuring some of their smoked sausage and Hortons Farm eggs today.

No GROWER NOTES this week. The changing of the seasons always means more work outdoors. Rest assured our farmers are busy working on future products to list.
Barring some unforeseen event we will continue our online ordering schedule till late June or early July for a small break. In both April and May we will have a one day pop up Market as follows:
