Market News

First off, I hope you all are doing well, staying healthy, and are able to weather out everything going on. It’s positively surreal how life has changed for us in a week. Hour by hour, things change even more, and it’s hard to imagine what all might happen between now and Thursday.

Without knowing if we’ll actually be able to have pickups on Thursday, I’ve gone ahead and tentatively opened up market. We all need to eat, and our local farmers have the best food for us. Their ability to get that food to you will be severely tested over the next few weeks, or even months. The Saturday Athens Farmers Market is supposed to open this coming Saturday, but in light of the guidelines issued by the CDC tonight that all events with over 50 people should be cancelled for the next eight weeks, I’d be very surprised if that would still happen. Our pickups aren’t near as crowded, but there’s plenty more than 50 coming to see us each week, and I know many of you are in the high risk category for this virus. The back room of the bike repair shop isn’t the ideal environment for sterilization, either.

So, here’s what I’m going to do. I will aspire to find a way in the next couple days to safely conduct order pickups on Thursday, and will let you all place your orders with those hopes. Odds are very high however that I won’t find a way forward, and in that case I will close market down and cancel your orders for the week. You (and the growers) will know for certain by Tuesday evening.

One possibility I’ve seen discussed with other growers around the country is “pop up” markets with individual farmers set up in separate parking lots and green spaces, removing the dangerous concentration of people at one place at one time. If that makes the most sense for our area, I’ll do what I can to help facilitate and publicize that effort.

In the meantime, stay safe and healthy, and you’ll hear more from me before Tuesday night.

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market has closed for the season. They’ll return in the Spring, and you can catch the news on their website. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours from 1-4. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Harvest - No Delivery This Week

Market News

Hello All,
I hope everyone is hanging in there. Fresh Harvest will not have deliveries this week due to the coronavirus. I’m not sure when our regular schedule will resume, but I will keep you posted. Our family is taking the recommendations of social distancing pretty seriously, so we are staying home. Hannah is home from UNC which will go to online classes. Annika’s high school will more than likely be closed for several weeks. The girls and Susie have already commented about how much they “love” Dad’s humor. It only motivates me to provide more. There is plenty of farm work to do. Strawberries should be ready in a month or so.

Bear Creek Farm will be processing some beef and pork tomorrow and Tuesday. If you want to preorder the cuts you would like, you can call/text LeeAnn at 615-517-0803 to place an order or to ask her questions. Pick up is at their Farm Store this Wednesday from 3-6pm. Address: 692 Thompson’s Station West Thompson Station, TN 37179

I’m wishing you all the best of health.

If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

Statesboro Market2Go:  Market2Go Pickup

Market2Go is open this week with pickup as usual on Thursday at the Statesboro Convention and Visitors Bureau (SCVB) and Victory Garden General Store in Sylvania. Although the SCVB is closed to the public, they have agreed to continued use of the facility for regular Market2Go pickups. In an effort to maximize social distancing but stay efficient, pickup procedures will be a little bit different — details will follow in email to people who have orders this week.

We believe that Market2Go can be a safe, community-building alternative to grocery store shopping, especially during this national health crisis. Remember that for a small fee you can have your order delivered to your house. Tell your neighbors and facebook friends about this opportunity to buy local food online

Thank you for your continued support of the market.

Foothills Market:  The Market is Open!

Foothills Market is open this week, but we are monitoring the situation and may need to make some adjustments later in the week. Since the university is closing campus at the end of this week, we will need to find a new location for pick-up of your orders. At this point, we will have this week’s pick-up still at the Food for Thought Garden house, but keep an eye out for a message if things change.

We still have fresh greens on the market, along with plenty of beef. Place your order between now and Wednesday at 5 p.m., and we’ll have it ready for pick-up on Thursday between 5-5:30 p.m.

Eat something fresh this week, and wash your hands!

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #3

Dear CSA-ers,

This week’s preassembled bag will contain Lovelock Head Lettuce, Spring Mix, Baby Swiss Chard Bunch, Purple Broccolini, Parsley plus Turnips and Greens. Custom orders may be placed on the online marketplace at:

http://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

Life on the farm continues as the Spring vegetables started as seeds begin to emerge from the ground. So far, we’ve seen sprouts from peas, radishes, arugula, carrots, and beets. These sprouts are still tiny and will need time to grow into large, healthy plants. It is always reassuring to see signs of life moving forward. Nonetheless, there have been some setbacks. Constant rain and overcast is keeping growth slow and some of the seed trays started in the greenhouse have been raided by mice. All farms experience these challenges, but when it rains it pours.
Surely the whole world is feeling this right now with the hardships created by COVID-19, and perhaps worse, people’s reaction to COVID-19. We at the farm take your health and welfare very seriously. We have taken extra classes in food safety and are complying with the new federal Food Safety Modernization Act. Your farm team is constantly washing hands, wearing gloves, and washing your veggies in an organic sanitation solution. We strive to get the most healthy, nutrient dense veggies into your hands and on your plates. With all of this being said, we will continue to be as transparent as possible. Above all else we want you to know that your health is our upmost concern and has always been. If you do get sick- we will still deliver but will take the knock and run approach for delivery to your home.
Since the University has temporarily moved online due to the virus, Hannah will be using her time home to raise a number of new chicks for late Summer egg production. We are still continuing to plant, harvest, weed and deliver to our members. This past Wednesday, we put transplants in four 100 foot beds of Spring kale and two more of white and yellow Swiss chard. Life persists and the Earth provides, so long as we nurture it. The nature of our produce is fresh and in perpetual renewal. We have yet to reach our capacity for CSA, so if you have friends and neighbors who are interested in fresh vegetables delivered, please encourage them to sign up and start ordering. As always, thank you for your support of our farm. We hope that our service helps to support you and your family as well.

Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team
