Market News
Today was just beautiful, a brief respite before we get another four days of rain. I saw the other day that we’re already well over double the average yearly rainfall for this time of year, and we’re just going to be adding to that surplus, it seems.
If you, like me, took advantage of the blue skies today to do some gardening, don’t let the balmy afternoons we’ve been getting fool you. There are several more frosts ahead of us, no doubt, starting with a bit of a freeze this coming weekend. Garden centers will be happy to sell you tomato plants this time of year, but keep them indoors for a while. There’s nothing outdoors they like right now.
I’ll be out of town this Thursday, leaving the market pickups in the hands of our capable and hard-working volunteers. I did have to take the salmon off for the week, since it’s stored at my house, but have no fears — it’ll be back next week. Doug has restocked the freezer one last time before heading out this month to Alaska to go catch more.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!
Other Area Farmers Markets
The Athens Farmers Market has closed for the season. They’ll return in the Spring, and you can catch the news on their website. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours from 1-4. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Market News
Hello!
My main goal during the winter months has always been to make sure that the strawberry plants were weeded. Every year, I say to myself “I’m going to weed those strawberries in January or at least in February”. It never happens. Part of the problem is that the farm manager here has a very strict policy, adamantly saying that none of the laborers can work outdoors until the temperature is above 50 degrees which includes the wind chill. I certainly don’t want to buck the edict and lose my job. This weekend I was able to start the long process of weeding the 2500 plants. The good news is that I should be able to listen to a couple of audiobooks during the weeding. Any suggestions? I’ve started Say Nothing, but it’s only 14 hours long.
Fresh Harvest will be offering veggie/herb plants this spring. We’ll definitely have several varieties of basil and tomato plants. If there are any particular herb or veggie plants that you would like us to grow, please let me know and we’ll do our best to start them for you.
We plan to go every other week come hell or high water (more rain in the next few days) until we have a larger selection of veggies or when the strawberries come in.
You have until Tuesday night to place your order.
Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!
If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

Foothills Market: The Market is Open!
Foothills Market is open for another week of shopping for local foods.
Meet Your Farmer
This week we will feature another of the growers on our market, Sheepy Hollow Farm. David Cooper and Kim Van Scoy have been farming near Clarksville since 2009. They raise a variety of vegetables and fruit as well as limited numbers of livestock, including lambs, pigs, Dexter cattle, poultry and fowl. Sheepy Hollow is a great example of a farm using sustainable, organic practices to cultivate diversity and care for the land.
Some of the items that make Sheepy Hollow unique on our market are their offerings of lamb. Although there isn’t a lot of lamb on the market at this time, that ought to change in the future. Kim reported that a new season of lambing is in full swing at the farm, with 20 new lambs so far and 35 ewes still to lamb. That’s a lot of babies – and sleep deprivation!
Check out the offerings from Sheepy Hollow and our other growers on the market. Make your selections between now and Wednesday at 5 p.m., and we’ll have your order ready for pickup from 5-5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The first tomato plants of the season are now available. While it might be too early to plant them in your garden, you could keep them inside for a couple of weeks until you are ready to put them outside. Brad’s atomic grape tomatoes are prolific producers of beautiful and delicious elongated cherry tomatoes. I never met Brad, but if I did, I would say: good job, Brad!
Mark your calendar: the 3rd annual plant sale at Bell Urban Farm on Tyler street. It will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 9 AM until 3 PM. Hundreds of varieties of flowers, herbs, and vegetable plants will be available.
Maria will have a full assortment of jams, jellies, pickles, etc. at market this Friday. She will also have some ready to eat barbecue pulled pork. All you need is a bun!
Look in the Dairy category for newly listed cheeses! Marinated, feta, pimento…
We’ve been having a lot of excellent items on the extra table lately. Earlier shoppers get the best selection. We are normally ready for customers to start arriving around 3 PM if you happen to be out and in the area. Just text me to see if we’re ready.
Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Four instance, type in the word “sale” and see what pops up. We have over 400 items available now!
Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!
And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)
