Miami County Locally Grown: Studebaker's breads; marinated chicken drums; plants...
Shop here
Thank you everyone for supporting our local market tonight! We lucked out and dodged the rain and storms for the most part – until all the vendors were packing up that is, then it let loose just in time for everyone to get soaked. Oh well…all in the name of supporting easy access to local food, right?
Studebaker “History in the Baking” is back on the market after a bit of time off – it’s a good thing too… we were certainly missing her sourdough and other delicious baked goods. And King’s has a new item – marinated chicken drums. Sounds like an easy, toss-on-the-grill type of meal!

The 1st Annual Basic Agriculture Commodities Expo was held at Pike County 9th Grade Academy. Students were the teachers that evening as the community came out to learn about Georgia’s agriculture commodities in hands-on, fun, and interactive ways. Teams of young people were stationed throughout the school’s cafeteria, and each group shared facts and figures about one of our state’s commodities as attendees visited their tables.
According to 2020 data from The Center for Agribusiness & Economic Development at the University of Georgia, these are the Top 10 Georgia Commodities, in order of value:
p=. Broilers – $3 billion
Cotton – $727.8 million
Peanuts – $678 million
Beef – $663.4 million
Timber – $649.8 million
Greenhouse – $566.2 million
Corn – $358.1 million
Blueberries – $304.2 million
Dairy – $297 million
Hay – $291.2 million
Here are some pictures of our young people in action.
Many of the students who presented at the Expo are active in the local FFA and 4-H programs. To these talented and eager young people, I say keep up the good work! The world needs farmers like you.
To our customers, thank you for supporting Georgia Grown, and we’ll see you at the Market.
Thanks,
Beverly

Weblog from a few of our Grower’s:
Welcome *TWO New Grower to the Market…*
Pinky’s Micros: We grow all different kinds of microgreens. Ones that everyone always can find at stores and some that people never ever seen before besides in high end restaurants. I want to bring people fresh microgreens so they can enjoy the health benefits plus also feel like a chef at home.
Microgreens and sprouts are extremely dense in vital enzymes, minerals and vitamins and chlorophyll. There aren’t many foods you could eat that are fresher.
Enjoy a dazzling array of new flavors. Plants are at their absolute peak of flavor intensity at this stage of life.
Linwood Farm: We are a 5 generation sheep farm in the Linwood Community of Watertown TN. We sell Lamb Rib Chops, Thick Cut Loin Chops, Leg Steak, Ground Lamb and Spicy Italian Lamb Brats.
Quarter Spring Farm: We still has a very limited supply of chicken cuts available on the market this week. We have plenty of delicious, free-range chicken eggs, and all sorts of superb smelling, skin softening, super sudsing, scintillating smelling soaps. Made from our goat milk.
Bean Man: Happy May everyone!. We have all of our fresh dry beans and bean mixes available for you this week as well as our Scottish Oatmeals and flours plus our Ready to Mix products. Remember, everything is tested gluten free and, regardless of diet, you can find several products, ingredients or mixes to suit your needs.
New this week is our Coconut Flour Ready to Mix pack which contains two packs of dry ingredients with each making a 1.5+ lb loaf of short bread with a wonderful aroma and a texture which allows for thick or thin slices – it will make a 4.5 wide x 8.5 long x 2 tall loaf in a 5×9 bread pan. As with our other mixes, we supply the pre-measured dry ingredients and you supply the wet ingredients for fresh, dairy free, gluten free bread to use in sandwiches or as a side
Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: New additional to our large list of live plants! Creeping Jenny,,, Lysimachia nummularia is a species of flowering plant in the primrose family Primulaceae. Its common names include moneywort, creeping jenny, herb twopence and twopenny grass. It makes a lush, full hanging basket or an excellent ground cover. But please be aware that it is somewhat invasive; watch to be sure it doesn’t overtake more desirable plantings. It is a perennial best grown in full sun to partial shade. The leaves will be a different color based on the plant’s sun exposure: golden yellow in full sun and chartreuse green in partial shade. In hot climates, afternoon sun may cause its leaves to blanch. Water regularly and don’t let the soil dry out.
Several selections of Azalias: Deep Solid Pink, Light Pink Streaked, Salmon Red, Soft Pink with large blooms..
Hardy Herb Stacked Planter: This planter may be a little difficult for me to describe so that you understand. If you have any questions, please contact me. This lovely planter will be a beautiful addition to your doorstep or porch. The overall height, including plants, is about 20 inches tall. It has three tiers
which can be taken apart for maintenance or re-arranging. Each tier has three herb plants of various types, for a total of nine plants in the planter. These herbs were growing in 4 inch pots before being added to the planter. All plants in this planter are winter-hardy in the middle Tennessee area.
Wild Plum Seedlings: You are buying a seedling which has been grown in my greenhouse for one year. It is between 2 and 3 feet tall. Prunus americana, commonly called American plum, is a small, deciduous, single trunk tree or multi-stemmed shrub which occurs in rocky or sandy soils in woodlands, pastures, abandoned farms, streams and hedgerows throughout the State. As a tree, it typically grows to 10-20’ tall with a broad, spreading crown. As a shrub, it suckers freely and can form large colonies. It is easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Remove suckers to prevent unwanted spread or to train into a small tree. It can form thickets with its thorn-like side branches so it will have to be maintained unless that is the desired result. It is fairly adaptable tough plant. Abundant tiny white flowers open before the leaves emerge in spring. Plums appear in late summer. Plum curculio and brown rot can affect the fruit of the American Plum. Other potential disease problems include leaf spot, canker and black knot. Other potential insect problems include aphids, scale, borers and tent caterpillars. This plant is susceptible to damage from deer.
Spring Meadow Farm: Arugual, Egg Salad, Fresh Cut Mint, Kale, Spinach, Spring Mix Lettuce, Super Greens, Strawberries and Watercress.
Bluhen Farm: Large selection of different lettuces this week; Batavia, Buttercrunch, Romaine, Romaine Mix, Simpson and Spring Mix
RC Farms: We have a wide assortment of produce available, meat products and the Strawberries are numerous!
Sap Creek Gardens: we have a large selection of Herbs and other items that will brighten you day and your garden up.
Flying S Farms: This week we have our Fresh Farm Chicken Eggs and we are now offering EGG BUNDLES-3 dozen, great savings! Most all our Baked Items are back on the market except the Artisan Breads – coming back soon. Several Jams and Jellies and I will be Jammin the next few days and will have more to select from.

GROWER & MARKET NOTES
Next Saturday
is Dothan Nursery’s annual Mother’s Day Open House
We’re very aware that some of you do not care for the hustle and bustle during these events and to avoid that we request that you pull up to the Market Shed, “covid style” for curbside delivery. That way you don’t even have to get out of your car if you don’t want to!
AVALON FARMS: So happy to finally be able to offer a few veggies. This week we’ve added Leeks, Spring Onions (from our Kinston Sweets!) and really new for us, Lettuce!
Saw the first squash bloom this morning! So about 2 weeks or so on those. Sugar snap peas are also blooming. Oh, and little tomatoes and pepper blooms! Spring is like that…super fast and super slow at the same time. Ha ha
So many things “coming soon”. Don’t lose faith.
HORTONS FARM: If our farm had a gossip column the latest headline might go something like this:
All would fit and yes, moi is the dog, mouse and grandmother who climbed up on this bad boy and did some WORK last week.
The backstory is I’ve always been secretly envious of ladies who drove tractors like my mom and others I’ve known. And my Mr. seldom let me near the controls of any of the heavy equipment he used to operate. But when this came home last year he sat me in the seat and let me operate all the controls in case I ever needed to do something heroic. (Like I would remember what each of 3 joysticks, each with multiple functions would do without practice. Plus it has tracks instead of wheels.)
So I’m getting in some practice! So far I’ve moved a lot of dirt, pulled out some roots and debris doing prep work for my first new raised bed in the original garden in a bit over 25 years. With a little help from friends we were able to get some root vegetables in. I’m eager to get back at the controls to prepare for the next installation.
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
