Thank you for choosing Northeast Georgia Locally Grown as a way to support your local producers. This online farmers market allows you to buy directly from multiple farms committed to chemical-free and local produce all year long! CHEMICAL-FREE means produce and pastures grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides. LOCAL means within 80 miles from the market pickup locations (usually much much closer). Do you know someone who grows chemical-free food in the area? Get them in touch with us. Know someone who wants fresh food? Spread the word. Put the two together, and that’s growing organically!

PICKUP TIME is Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m.

If you do not get an email ORDER CONFIRMATION right after you order then your order is NOT complete. Log back in and your order might still be there waiting for you to check out! If you have any trouble or questions at all, we are here to help; simply reply to this email.

COVID19: Thanks for recognizing we can all do our part in operating in the safest way possible. Be on the lookout for the order reminder email with any changes to pickup or ways you can help minimize risk for our volunteers and each other. Thanks for your support!*

Champaign, OH:  A Shire Farm Update!

Hey everyone!

First, huge thank you to each of you! Your support of small local farmers helps ensure that we can continue to produce quality goods for our community. You may have noticed our dwindling inventory, fear not, this is normal. Since we raise our meat birds on grass, it means that we only grow them out when temperatures are above freezing. We have our first batch of meat birds for 2022 outside, enjoying the sunshine right now ???? Our date with the processor is the first week of June, so you will see that restock as soon as we have that available for you. We did have to change processors from what we used last year, so you will see some differences in quantity and packaging.

We will have Thanksgiving turkey pre-orders go live on our website www.shirefarmoh.com on June 1st ! Mark your calendars if you are interested, they went really quickly last year ????

Thank you!

Miami County Locally Grown:  Diet and Heart Disease

Diet and Heart Disease

Some years ago I stumbled across an article by Dr. Dwight Lundell, a heart surgeon who corroborated a refutation of the lipid hypothesis, which proposes that a high fat/cholesterol diet causes heart disease, our conventional wisdom. This has led to widespread use of cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins).

But a little known fact, according to the Weston A. Price Foundation, is that heart disease in the United States was insignificant until after the 1920s, when traditional fats (lard, butter) began to be replaced by hydrogenated plant oils such as margarine and vegetable shortening.

Fast forward a century. Most of us have heard by now of the dangers of trans-fats. This is what margarine and shortening are, and they are being promoted as a healthier alternative to animal fats. But it’s not insignificant that the incidence of heart disease began to rise along with the introduction of hydrogenated (trans) fats into the American food supply.

Add to this scenario the increase of sugar in the average diet (including high fructose corn syrup beginning in the 1970s), and now diabetes is added, along with heart disease and obesity—the so-called diseases of western culture. But back to Dr. Lundell.

He gives an interesting explanation of how diet affects the health of our blood vessels. Zeroing in on one aspect of this three-page article (see link to full text below): Omega 6 and Omega 3 fats. The former comes from the seeds, the latter from a plant’s leaves and roots. Ideally, our diet should include a ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 of about 3:1. But with highly processed carbohydrates (cookies, crackers, cereal, bread, etc.) that ratio in the typical diet is about 15-30:1. And this situation causes a chronic inflammatory response in blood vessels. Cholesterol is deposited in blood vessels as a response to this inflammation and is not the cause of it. It’s like blaming the ambulance driver for the accident.

Champaign, OH:  Thursday Pick Up!

Just a reminder that if you ordered, this week, your pick up is tonight, between 4pm-6pm!

If you need a Friday/Saturday pick up, and have not already alerted me to that, please let me know! Remember that Friday pick ups are from 10am-12pm, and not all day long!

If you need to be after 6pm, this evening, your orders will be boxed and waiting for you inside the greenhouse!! I know we used to do porch pick ups, but we don’t trust the porch with weather, and all of the kittens that run around!

ALSO…be patient, this evening, at pick up. Your other market manager, Mark, will be working the market, solo, while I am in Dayton for another appointment for my baking accident.

Fingers crossed for good news so that I can get back to baking!!!

Thank you, for always supporting our little local market!!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
