Thank you for choosing Northeast Georgia Locally Grown as a way to support your local producers. This online farmers market allows you to buy directly from multiple farms committed to chemical-free and local produce all year long! CHEMICAL-FREE means produce and pastures grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides. LOCAL means within 80 miles from the market pickup locations (usually much much closer). Do you know someone who grows chemical-free food in the area? Get them in touch with us. Know someone who wants fresh food? Spread the word. Put the two together, and that’s growing organically!

PICKUP TIME is Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m.

If you do not get an email ORDER CONFIRMATION right after you order then your order is NOT complete. Log back in and your order might still be there waiting for you to check out! If you have any trouble or questions at all, we are here to help; simply reply to this email.

COVID19: Thanks for recognizing we can all do our part in operating in the safest way possible. Be on the lookout for the order reminder email with any changes to pickup or ways you can help minimize risk for our volunteers and each other. Thanks for your support!*

Champaign, OH:  Give Me The Beat, Boys...

Thanks for the joy that you’ve given me
I want you to know I believe in your song
And rhythm and rhyme and harmony
You’ve helped me along
Makin’ me strong…
(Drift Away-Dobie Gray)

Could there be a better song? And, this lyric…I was singing this, to myself, the other day, thinking of all the outpouring of concern you all have sent my way. It’s kept me on the sunshine side of things.

Also, an update…I’ve moved on to Level 2 of my treatment plan, and the burn team were so very excited about the progress of my healing in Level 1. I return, next Thursday, for a third visit. I remain on baking/soup hiatus, but remember that there is Cosmic frozen soups and breads, and you can order them if you like to be surprised!

On more market beats…

I am awaiting word from Beth of Harrigan’s Harvest because with fingers crossed…she may have asparagus available for this week’s market! As soon as I hear from her, I will send out that HUGE alert…because you know, we LOVE her and her asparagus!!!

Other market beats…

All of our lovely, seasonal, market produce vendors have reported that they are ramping up all growing to be able to have even more at the market, this season!!! SO EXCITED!!!

And, as always, we have the year round loveliness of Old Souls Farm!!

New, this week…

JC Growers have unleashed two new seasoning mixes!!!!

We have so much to offer, so much love that goes into all that our vendors produce for you, and they are here for you!!

Floral updates…

Our girls from Flourish are working out a floral schedule for the market that will help in their time!! Rebekkah remains in Hawaii, and Audrey is rockin’ the good job at Second Harvest Food Bank, and they hope to make a once a month floral offering!! I will announce once they work it out!

And, we will be welcoming a new little local florist, on a weekly basis, bringing blooms from local farms. Not to take away from Flourish, but she will be weekly. Once her prom and Mother’s Day season is over, she will be bringing her floral magic to the market. She’s an up and comer, and she recently opened, Bell’s Flowers, in downtown Urbana!

I think, on the one week a month that Flourish comes on, I will have Bell’s go into vacation mode, that week. That way, we can show each the LOVE!

Give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Champaign, OH:  Market Love!

Here we go, market lovelies!

Another week of market ordering!

I loved seeing all of you, this evening! I am still on baking hiatus, but did get good healing reports, today!

I revisit the hospital, next week, to see the progress!

But, there is still the frozen Cosmic breads and soups, until I return!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Miami County Locally Grown:  The Foodscape We Live In

Shop here …and remember to join us for our Night Market on May 3rd from 4:00-7:00!

Food is such a multi-faceted thing. It involves family, tradition, childhood experience, emotions (think comfort food), willpower (meal planning, choices), health, agriculture, and economics. The food choices we make every day are to some extent determined by all these various factors and in turn affect so many other things, such as our health and the kind of agriculture our food dollars support.

For those who grew up in a household where regular meals made from fresh ingredients were the norm, they are fortunate because this good habit was taught by example. The added benefit is that they probably got a nutrition-based healthy start in life. But society’s food options and customs changed drastically in the last 30-40 years. Things like microwaves, highly processed items, moms with careers beyond the home, along with other factors, all impacted our ‘foodscape’.

The so-called convenience of pre-cooked ingredients and meals is, for the majority of people, probably too tempting or sometimes necessary just to get through a typical day. The downside of this is that these items are not only devoid of quality nutrition, but also are full of sugar, sweeteners, excessive salt, unhealthy oils, and all manner of synthetic additives—which, when consumed regularly, place added stress on digestion mechanisms, the liver, and kidneys, to name a few. Shelf life is inversely proportional to the quality of nutrition. Healthier foods are fresh and biologically active, thus feeding the good bacteria in our guts.

What is tragic about the prevailing food norms is that there are many preventable chronic diseases, if only proper nutrition is/had been practiced. Not that environment and genetic heritage are unimportant, but the problem is that we have too many improper choices. For those who want to do better, it is no easy thing to change a lifetime of habits, traditions, and lasting effects of experiences. However, small but steady steps are the path forward, and educating oneself on the basics of nutrition and health are a great place to start. I recommend the highly readable Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual by Michael Pollan. Concepts are presented in an easy to understand yet somewhat detailed way, just enough for you to get the picture, so to speak. There is a very amusing illustrated version of the book that makes it a really fun read. Heck, it might even make a good book club candidate among the shoppers at Miami County Locally Grown!
