Market News

Things worked well enough last week that we’re going to try to have order pickups at Ben’s Bikes again this Thursday. Incase you just woke up from a month-long nap, we’ve had to make a few changes to keep everyone as safe as possible. We know that now more than ever it’s important for you to have fresh, locally grown food direct from our area farmers, and we’re here to facilitate that as best as we possibly can.

First, we will be working to gather all of your non-refrigerated items together before you get there, ready to pick up in paper grocery sacks. We’ll be working as quickly as possible, but we do need a little bit more time than usual. We’d love it if you wait until 5pm to arrive. The coolers will be full of cold and frozen things that we have to dig through, so if you all arrive right at five, not only will you have to socially distance yourselves across the parking lot, but you’ll also have to wait as we try to find everyone’s things in the coolers. We’ll be there until 8pm as usual, so feel free to come any time between five and eight.

We also want to minimize the amount of things that get handled. That’s why we’ll be pre-bagging your items instead of using your baskets or our bins. Also, please hold on to your recyclables for the foreseeable future. Even better, recycle them yourself at the various ACC locations about town.

We’d also rather not handle cash, checks, or cards in person. We understand if you really need to pay in person with paper money, but if at all possible, there are two better options for payment:

First, you can add a credit or debit card to your account, on the “Your Account” page of the website. It’s secure, powered by Stripe, and ALG never possesses your number ourselves. The downside is they charge us 3% for processing, and we have to pass that along to you.

Second, you can pay via Venmo on your phone. This is totally free to you, saving you from that 3% surcharge, and we treat it same as cash. You can find us there as @athenslocallygrown. You can pay via your phone right when you pick up your order, so you have the amount exactly right. If you want to add me as a contact first, go for it! If it asks you for my phone number as confirmation you actually know me, use 706-567-8954. Don’t try calling us, though — that’s the hotspot we use for our tablets.

Finally, we went to minimize the crowd waiting for food. To that end, please only send one person, and leave the kids in the car. We’ll be as quick as we can handing out orders, but if you want to text me to let me know you’re on the way, send me a message to 706-248-1860. Be sure to say who you are! Last week I got so many messages from people not in my contacts that my phone decided I was being spammed, and I didn’t actually see most of your messages until I got home. It turns out we did manage to pre-bag most everything so it didn’t really matter, but if you still want to text me to say you’re on the way, go for it. I added everyone from last week to my contacts, so not only will my phone know who you are, it also looks like I have lots of friends.

On our end, we’re minimizing our contact with the items, will wear gloves, and be washing our hands and using all the hand sanitizer we can have available. Speaking of which, I know that stuff is the most valuable substance on earth right now, but if you happen to have a bottle in your bunker that you can spare, could you please donate it to us? Thank you!

Like for everyone else, this is new territory for us, and we’re having to adjust on the fly. Last week saw three times the normal amount of sales for our growers, which would be logistically challenging for us in normal circumstances. Please be patient with us on Thursday if things don’t go the most smoothly, and if you see something we could be doing better, please tell us. We don’t know how long we’ll be able to do this, but we’ll keep it going as long as we possibly, and safely, can.

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Foothills Market:  Foothills Market is (Still) Open!

Wow – how much has changed in a week! With social distancing and depleted grocery store shelves, we’re all more aware of our personal food supply. Foothills Market is still open, although we are making some changes to our pick-up process to comply with the procedures recommended by the CDC.
Beginning this week, we will be having pick-up on the west side of the courthouse square in downtown Clarksville. Having an open-air market will allow people to keep the six-foot spacing the CDC recommends. We will also be extending the pick-up time to be from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Friday, giving people a better chance to spread out their pick-ups.
We still have plenty of beef on the market, although quantities of eggs and produce are limited (especially since the Food for Thought Garden, as part of the University campus, is closed). Be sure to check our listings on Mondays; some of our growers sell on other markets and will be updating their listings to adjust for sales on those markets.
We are still committed to providing you with high-quality, locally-grown food. Stay well, and eat something fresh this week!

RAF Buying Clubs :  Our Online Store is Now Open!

Good afternoon!

Our inventory has been updated and our online store is now open.

A few notes for this week:

1. On Wednesday morning we will email a Square Invoice to everyone who has placed an order. You will be able to pay this invoice online before coming to pickup your order. This will help us avoid having to exchange cash as much as possible. If you would still like to pay cash please bring exact change. You may also bring a check for payment.

2. We have added a third pickup location starting this week. It will be on Long Meadows Drive in Lynchburg from 6:30 – 7:00pm on Wednesday. Exact address will be sent to you via email once you have placed your order.

Please be sure to read your order confirmation email for information about the precautionary steps we are taking in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic.

Thank you all for your support and we’ll see you soon!

The Wednesday Market:  An Important Message from The Wednesday Market

Dear Friends,

Ordinarily, I’d be sitting down to write this weblog to let you all know that the Market is open for orders, but today, I’m sad to inform you that The Wednesday Market is closed until further notice. The health and well being of our farmers, customers, and volunteers are of our utmost concern. Please join us in heeding the directive of federal, state, and local governments to stay at home and limit social interactions. We must all do our part to keep the virus from spreading. We do not know how long the COVID-19 pandemic will last.

May you all be safe and healthy until we meet again.

Your Market Managers,

Beverly, Sharon, Irma, and Anna

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #4

Dear CSA-ers,

As of today, it remains our intention to deliver CSA, this coming Thursday, March 26. The Preassembled Bag will contain Spinach, Romaine, Mixed Baby Cabbage, Curly Kale, Kale Rappini, and Power Greens. Orders should be placed between now and Tuesday evening on the website at:

https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

As society enters a time of great uncertainty, we do our best to remain in the present, and keep performing the necessary activities on the farm. The chickens and their guardian dogs must be fed, there are still crops to plant and tend. This past week, we transplanted our first two rows of high-tunnel tomatoes as well as a new rotation of lettuce. This weekend we got colder than expected temperatures which necessitated covering those delicate transplants. This was a contingency we were surprised by but also prepared for. Adaptability is the nature of sustainable agriculture.

Thus far the Farm Team remains healthy. It is our hope that this remains the case and we can continue serving you and those you hold dear. We are firmly committed to doing our best to protect the health of our families, community, and customers. This includes all our food safe practices and complying with any mandates that come from the State. While these times are trying for all of us, this crisis has pushed some milestones. This past week was our largest ever CSA; we harvested, washed, and packed more bags than we ever had before. We hope these brought joy and wellness to everyone who ordered.

This coming week promises some sunshine. Thursday we passed the Vernal Equinox and Friday ushered in the first day of Spring. The verdant energy of life is evident all around the farm. We are beginning to hear frogs and see birds return from the South. There are flowers sparkling in white and pink in the surrounding forest. When we take a moment to unplug from the jet-engine roar of media, we experience these things. It’s easier to feel at peace. Though there may be more gloomy days ahead, seeing vegetables is reassuring. The provision of Earth is abundant. We hope to share it with you. As always, thank you for your support. We wish you and those you love well.

CLG:  Opening Bell: Shiitake Mushrooms, Honey, Eggs, Sausage!

Good afternoon!
Specials this week:

Restaurants are closed. This puts a great financial strain on these small businesses, and it keeps up from enjoying them on occasion. We have the ability to support one such business: Julie’s Sweet Shoppe. I spoke with Julie on Friday when she personally delivered her ordered items to CLG. She has listed the following specials which will help the bakery, and give us some variety in our diets.
Chocolate Chunk Cookies $6/dozen
Mini butter bread loaf $1.50 each
Glazed donuts $7.50/dozen (my favorite)

Strack Farm has asparagus, kale, onions and lettuce. The onions freeze well if chopped.

Lots of farm fresh eggs available!

Our market will continue to meet in the parish hall every Friday. Each person can make their own decisions on which activities to restrict and which to continue. Your order can be brought to your car in the parking lot by one of our dedicated volunteers. Just call or text me when you are parked, and we will bring your order to your vehicle. 501-339-1039.

Let’s do this again this week since restaurants are closed. Here’s a great way to get something international on your supper table during this crisis:!selamaT
Pork, chicken or jalapeño & cheese.
Five for $7.
At market this Friday, March 20th.
Text me your order.
501–339-1039

Mark your calendar: the 3rd annual plant sale at Bell Urban Farm on Tyler street. It will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 9 AM until 3 PM. Hundreds of varieties of flowers, herbs, and vegetable plants will be available.

We are normally ready for customers to start arriving around 3 PM if you happen to be out and in the area. Just text me to see if we’re ready.

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Four instance, type in the word “sale” and see what pops up. We have almost 500 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

Please check your email a few minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thanks!

News from Some of Growers:

Dogwood Walley Greenhouse: All the very early spring perennials are still available, and in addition a bunch of new ones have joined them recently. Unfortunately I cannot make them all featured, which is why I list them here. The very early azaleas are blooming, including my personal favorite, the white streaked with a little pink, and my other personal favorite, the pink with throat markings, both fall rebloomers. Another shrub in bloom right now is flowering almond, which really deserves a spot in your garden. The dwarf coreopsis is just beginning its long bloom cycle, and several mints are growing well. Three woodland phlox are blooming, including both purple and pink stolonifera as well as blue divaricata. These three will really light up your spring shady areas……Very new to the market this week, and very special, are the “Stacked Planters”. I have put some together with hardy herbs and some with hardy succulents, and am impatiently waiting till warmer weather to plant some with tender succulents. These planters have three layers which can be disassembled and rearranged as much as you like. I will be glad to bring one in to place on the market table for you to see if you’d like. Just drop me an email and let me know.

Carole’s Herbs (CS3 Farm): This week we have forage greens (mostly miner’s lettuce and arugula for now) and our delicious Black Vanilla Tea to get you past the cloudy spring days! Also try some of our herbal healing and regular teas for a delicious (and cheaper) alternative to the OTC options. They are delicious hot or cold, and all quite nutritious. We also have our immune boosting essential oil recipe in both nasal inhalers and sustainable smelling salts……Try a gut-healthy Ginger-Fig or Wolfberry Mint shrub/tonic for great taste combined with nutritious ingredients. Use them also for a salad dressing with our Rosemary-Thyme Hummus….When you need to quarantine from the quarantine . . . Revitalizing Bath Salt

Quarter Spring Farm: We are pleased to offer a full selection of sizes of whole chickens, as well as select remaining cuts of chicken. We are happy to announce several new soap scents available through Stones River Market, as well. We have added Strawberry soap and shampoo, Grandma’s Garden, and Barnyard Berries to our available scents…….The CDC recommends frequent hand washing as one of the most effective ways to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Our goat milk soaps are made to be great for your skin, so you can pamper while you protect.

Wedge Oak Farm: We are excited to offer our locally farm raised meats this week! Ground Meats- All are 80/20%……Grass fed Beef, Pasture Pork, 100% Chicken,..,,,Breakfast Sausages: Pork: Medium, Hot, XSage….,,Poultry Medium available too!,,,,Honky Tonk Cheesesteak Sausage – beef, bacon, jalapeños, white cheddar.,…,,,We are loaded with pork and poultry links too. It is a great time for cooking at home and a roaster chicken or Half Chicken can feed you for several meals.,.,,,Check out stock parts, bones, and broths for your soups, beans and rice! A real stock is a great addition to staying healthy. Beef, Pork, Chicken, Turkey and Duck.,,.,,Beef Round Roasts, Boston Butts and Pork Ribs make a great dinner too. Put them in the Instapot for a faster finish in the oven.

Oakview Farm: We will again have our delicious chicken and duck eggs for sale this week. We are also looking forward to a great Spring growing season. We should have our Spring microgreens and Spinach and Kale next week!

Farrar Farm LLC: Regrettably we will not be on the market this week, we’ve sold out! If all goes as planned, we will have more products available next week.

Sow’s Ear Piggery: we have added more new cuts from the “small batch” order we recently processed. Spring-time temperatures are great for firing up the grill for chops or ribs. With Easter around the corner, think about a small fresh ham roast. These are not cured, but we can provide instructions and the tiny amount of “pink salt” insta-cure needed for a curing brine. These cuts and more (ground pork, cutlets, shoulder steaks) are from young, tender heritage-breed pigs, fed a non-GMO, no-corn, non-so, non-antibiotic diet. USDA inspected.

BB’s Gourmet Pretzels: Take a break, sit back with a bag of our delicious and could be addictive flavors of our pretzels. Also have Gluten Free Pretzels and Gluten Free Peanut butter cookies. (Comment: the Smudges are over the top delicious! by Catherine, Market Manager)

Flying S Farms: Our Squadron of Chickens have been eggcitingly producing eggs for the market this week. Several Breads available; Sour Dough, Artisan style and Friendship Breads, most all these breads make delicious as ‘French Toast’! Brownies and Lemon Bars, Cinnamon Cake Bars, I will be adding Jams as I prepare them today and Salad Onions are available.

Mo’Scrubs by Toya: Treat yourself or love one with our products. From head to toe, relaxing and beneficial. Your body will thank you.

Caney Fork Farms: Unfortunately we will not be able to open on the Market this week. Planning to return to Market starting in April.

Look forward seeing you “On the Porch” at Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday March 25th from 5:00 – 6:30pm, please contact me if you are unable to make delivery or are running late, please phone, email or text me so we can make arrangements to get your order to you.
