Berea Gardens: Market Open
Hi Everyone,
The market is now open for this week’s orders. Remember to get yours in before it closes at 9 AM Tuesday for Wednesday’s pick up.
We have our first round of broccoli and cauliflower to offer this week with lots more on the way. We also have a new variety of red bibb lettuce that we are offering for the first time.
All of our crops are grown without the use of any pesticides and our soils are mineralized with the concept of optimizing human as well as plant nutrition. That’s why our produce just tastes better!
Champaign, OH: Morning Song
Cause even though I know there’s hope in
Every morning song
I have to find that melody alone…
(The Avett Brothers)
One of my favorite lyrics, and easy Sunday morning music…
I love Sundays because I can take the day, all to myself, and either get lost in nothingness, regroup for the coming week of another crazy market week of bringing local to the masses, recharging from being ‘on’, all week, or I can organize my life so that when I step back into the trenches, on Tuesdays, I am not a chaotic mess.
This week was an emotional one, for me. Nothing bad. All very good, in fact, but even good emotional weeks will bring me to tear up, and have a good cry, and embrace all that is around me. Our market is now family to so many customers, and your emails, and texts, and then the loveliest of donations, to our market this weekend, have had me all an emotional mess.
The loveliness side of the pandemic is what I have been a part of. And, I don’t mean to imply that there is a lovely side, but being able to see all of your smiling faces, knowing that we are sending you on your way with local love, local goodness, well… it moves me, it grooves me, and I hope that all of you, the customers, market family in both customers, and vendors, can feel that lovely bond that has happened.
Here’s to Sunday, babes…find your melody…
One more lovely thought…next Sunday is Mother’s Day. I know that we cannot celebrate in the way we all normally would, but think about things from the market, to brighten her day. Even gift her with a box of lovely foods for her week…
And…we have a new vendor, Doug Hall, of the Airport Café. He brings us his homegrown rhubarb, and he is going to offer a few pies that are not already being offered by our other pie bakers…
The local network…the real morning song.
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

News From Our Growers:
Mother’s Day idea’s..Mo’s Scrubs, several items to pamper anyone with, JillianFaithArt will brighten anyone’s day! Mama D’s Bakery you can never go wrong giving Donuts or any of their wonderful items! Farrar Farm great meat choice to roast, grill, fry or bake. Flying S Farms jams and jellies are always wonderful to give as gifts or special occasions.Carole Herbs (CS3 Farm) Their tea selection havee great choices for gifting.
Wedge Oak Farm: we will be taking this week off from Stones River Market. We process chicken and hogs this week and will be back loaded with product next week.
Nom Noms Dog Treats: has the perfect Doggie Mothers Day gift – treats and toys. Not only are the treats gluten/wheat free, cruelty free, and deliciously nutritious but the packaging and toy are Mother Earth Friendly also. The braided rope doggie toys are durable and made from cotton. The reusable jar is air tight with a lid and band. No frustrating label to pick off since we used stock card and twine instead of a plastic sticker label. Reuse the jar over and over, and compost the label and twine. Each treat jar comes with 1 braided dog toy.
Carole Herbs (CS3 Farm): We have fresh greens, gourmet mustard, and a new hummus.
We have more forest greens and miners lettuce. Both are a nutrient-dense (filling) lettuce or spinach alternative/supplement, so they can be used for breakfast (smoothies/eggs), lunch (salads), and dinner (as a salad or side vegetable). We also have just a few bunches of mustard greens to add a kick to anything you eat (fresh or cooked). Our lettuce is in time-out while it grows, with more coming along fast.
We (finally) have a fresh new batch of our best/selling Apicius Mustard. It’s an ancient Roman recipe with pine nuts and almonds. You needn’t speak Latin to love it, but if you do feel free to share!
And speaking of pine nuts, try our new (and delicious) toasted pine nut hummus. It’s best on anything you can imagine, like breads, crackers, salads, or even soups (it’s made with garbanzo beans so it is a great meat/protein alternative).
We also have herbal teas, traditional teas, and a few herbal honeys to brighten your day!
Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: Strawberry hanging baskets are ready! They are a lot fuller than the early photo indicates, and they each have several early berries now ripe, for an immediate taste treat.
And a few of the larger tomato and pepper plants are ready! I will have more varieties of tomatoes in a couple weeks, as they were started pretty late and need a little more time to grow. But those who know me, know that I say wait till May 15 to plant vegetable plants, anyway, as the soil will be warmer and will hasten growth after planting.
Lettuce Bowls are back! Loaded with a variety of direct-seeded plants, they will make great-tasting cut-and-come-again salads for some time.
I still have a good selection of azalea bushes. Although they are no longer blooming, they will make a good green addition to your landscape, as you wait for next spring’s blooms.
The herbs are growing well, and from week to week I will have different Fresh Cuts and some live plants to sell. I listed a couple, but some are already sold out. I still have lots of Elderberry bushes, but when they are gone, they are gone for this year. Since it would be better for them to be transplanted before the summer heat arrives, you should plan to get yours soon.
Flying S Farms: Swiss Card, Pac Choy, Radishes, Green Garlic and Salad onions. Added Super Mini (6) and Mini (3) Artisan Boule think of them like small biscuits or rolls.
Look forward seeing you “At the Curb" of Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday May 6th from 5:00 – 6:30pm, please contact me if you are unable to make delivery or are running late, please phone, email or text me so we can make arrangements to get your order to you.

Yalaha, FL: What Should I order IN
Hi All, We are heading into the Hot season and many of my crops tend to give up soon. So I am looking for supplemental produce to bring in to offer through the Market during the Hot Season. And well, I will probably also want to supplement the market with some of the things that I’m Not growing and haven’t been able to get another local farm to offer on the market.
So, Please see this e-mail as an opportunity to let me know what you would like to see me get and also let me know what is of utmost importance.
Like, Are you mostly interested in just getting more produce out of your order from the farm? Or is it important that it be organic and/or local?
Just to let you know, I have not yet found an organic distributor to order from, but I’m still looking (I will make the listings show where I am sourcing things and share what info I can about it.) Right now I’m looking at suppliers that usually distribute to Restaurant customers. I will be making a trip out this coming week to check some of them out.
I could probably also include some meat, eggs and dairy as well (In addition to the Raw Cow milk already available.)
So Please let me know what you think you would definitely buy if I had it available (even share the price point you would pay so I can see if I can get it for that) and I can bring some in. I will be having to pay up front for anything and cash flow is tight lately so I don’t want to bring in a lot of stuff if people won’t be buying it.

Loving on Mom

Grower Notes
HONORING MOM
We love our Moms, and while covid may have changed a lot of the way we interact with our moms (or the way they interact with us!), thank heavens we have creative options for ways we can show our love to them, and another week to plan it out!
We thought we’d share some ideas for ways you can love on the special women in your life while supporting both covid guidelines and small businesses. Here goes!
1. Something beautiful from Dothan Nurseries. Right now your Market Manager is kicking herself that she didn’t know about the continual blooming Sunfinity Sunflower yesterday while at the Nursery. The Sunfinity is one of many delicious plants Dothan Nurseries posts regularly on their Facebook page. While the Nursery is the loveliest and safest place to shop in the city, if you can’t get out much connecting with them through facebook is a great way to see what’s available.

2. Hand crafted artisan bath and body products fromSt. Andrews Soap Company and Bella Eden Farms. Both these companies have great luxurious soaps, lotions, serums, etc. You can’t go wrong with anything from either!
3. Special Taste Treats: D’s Jellies makes uniquely Southern jams and jellies from things grown on their Cottonwood farm, including the Mahaws! Casa Perdido has a fine selection of flavored vinegars made from Alabama muscadines, and both 3LC Apiary and Horton’s Farm have local honey available every week.
4. Holistic health products from Mayim Farms and Horton’s Farm. Both have a long history of making health and wellness products from nature. Thorough product descritpions are available on the Market page.

5. If you’re fortunate enough to be able to prepare a good meal we’ve got the good eats and drinks!
- Vegetables from Avalon Farms, Danny’s Greens, and Mayim Farms.
- Special Teas from Martin Tea’s
- Meat from Smith Farms, Richter Farms and Avalon Farms.
- Deviled Eggs, custards, etc with eggs from Kathy’s Churpers, , Richter Farms, Avalon Farms and Horton’s Farm.
MARKET CHITCHAT
What a beautiful site in the Market Shed yesterday! Thank you to everyone who ordered. While we’re thankful for the white bags, we’re really looking forward to getting back to using your bags as they hold up so much better. Plus they just have so much more character. Soon . . . we hope!

This section is a reprint from last week’s newsletter for the benefit of our new customers.
I. Order Payment:
1. Voluntarily prepay by 6 pm Thursday if possible using this PAYPAL link. This eliminates passing paper currency back and forth or handling of debit/credit cards on site. Your invoice will be marked PAID and pickup is fast and easy.
2. You may use PAYPAL curbside on Friday. Not quite as efficient as we have to verify receipt but it does work.
3. Debit/Credit – yes, we still take cards using our regular system. We just have to get within 6 feet for you to put your card in the chip reader. We do our best to avoid touching your card or you touching the equipment which means we sign an “x” for your signature.
4. Cash and Checks – please put them in a plastic baggie or bank bag. If you want to put them in your trunk/tailgate that would eliminate the need to come near the drivers window
II. Curb Service:>/b> It’s OK to pull up next to the building. In fact we recommend it as tractor trailers sometimes need to share that space. Have your trunk/ hatchback open and we’ll load you up!

AVALON FARMS: Avalon Farms
First the bad news: We are almost out of our whole pasture raised chickens.
The OK news: There’s a few left I found in our “personal” freezer. One has a broken wing. With the current demand I’m listing these.
The good news: There will be 40 birds processed in a few weeks. With several more groups in the pipeline.
Previously we only used Freedom Rangers for our meat chickens. They are known as good foragers and do well on pasture. They also take 14 to 16 weeks to grow out on pasture.
The traditional meat chicken, Cornish Cross, grows out in 5 to 6 weeks. They need half the time and feed. These are what’s raised in all the big industrial chicken houses. In that industrial environment, with thousands in one house, they have unlimited feed 24/7 causing them to grow too fast which causes health issues for them and a high mortality rate. They are usually processed around 5 weeks. You’ve probably seen the truck loads of miserable looking chickens on the way to processing.
The 40 birds we have on pasture now are Cornish Cross. By raising them on pasture, with limited feed, they naturally scratch around and eat bugs and grass like you would expect. The fresh air, sunshine and exercise helps them to live a happier, healthier life. Providing us with healthier chicken.
These are not genetically modified “franken-chickens”. They are a breed of chickens bred using normal methods to have a “high feed conversion ratio” (meaning their biology is more efficient at converting food into body mass).
We’ll be processing the oldest ones in a few weeks. As you can see they do grow fast!
