News from some of our Growers:
Belle Fleur Organics:
This week we offer:
Olympus Bell Pepper a large and delicious green bell pepper perfect for grilling, sautéing, stuffing. Bright, juicy-crisp, slightly acidic flavor pairs well with a variety of dishes.
Cayenne Peppers; Beautiful, flavorful heat. 2-4 inches in length. Perfect for stringing and drying, adding to chili or stews for some spice, or consuming medicinally.
Jalapenos; Fresh, dark green, and pleasantly spicy without being overwhelming. Great size for Jalapeño poppers (stuffed with duck sausage? We think so!). Also great for drying into chipotle peppers to use as seasoning.
Ping Tung Long Eggplant:
This delicious skinny eggplant is named for its place of origin in Ping Tung, Taiwan. It is truly the eggplant for people who say they don’t enjoy them, as trying them sautéed is enough to change your mind. Superior texture, lack of bitterness, and concentrations of vitamins A, C, and potassium are all great reasons to add this veggie to your stir-fry, pasta, or as a meat substitute for those trying to live a more plant-based existence.
Dogwood Greenhouse:
The fall beauties are in full bloom, and at Dogwood Valley Greenhouse that means more than chrysanthemums. We still have several species Begonias with their lovely pink blooms. Coincidentally, they pair very well with the tall pink sedums, just reaching full bloom. And what can accent them both better than the beautiful yellow or green creeping sedums? I also have a couple of darker pink tall sedums, which you can see in the photo. Add some of these fall beauties to your garden this year!
Quarter Spring Farm:
Happy chickens taste better. Free range eggs are easy on the belly and the conscience. Pampered goats make better soap. By supporting our farm, you are helping support local agriculture, keeping your dollars local, and acting as an environmental steward. Plus, you will eat well and smell great…and everybody loves that. Dog Treats and our beautiful reusable napkins as well.
Mama D’s Bakery:
Hi everyone! With fall and cooler weather coming on (I hope) we have added a couple fall inspired items. Carmel apple cinnamon rolls and spicy ginger cookies (which are not actually spicy, they just have that good ginger bite. Spicy just sounded better. We hope to add more fall things as the season comes closer, so stay tuned! We also have all our other items available as well. Thanks so much to everyone for continuing to support local businesses!
Rainbow Hill Farm:
Delicious Apples this week…….
Jonagold: This apple is a cross of Jonathan and Golden Delicious. A tart flavor with some sweetness.
Ambrosia: A new apple variety with a mildly sweet and juicy flavor. Has a pink tinged flush over a yellow background.
Mutsu: large green to yellow apple similar to yellow delicious, also a very good cooking apple.
Rhode Island Greening: An heirloom apple. Originated in Rhode Island during colonial days. Crisp and juicy with tart flavor similar to Granny Smith.
Yellow Delicious: Very sweet to the taste. It is a favorite for salads, apple sauce, and apple butter.
Farrar Farms LLC:
We are continuing our GROUND BEEF SPECIAL, purchase 5 pounds of Ground Beef and get 1 pound free. Get out those Grills or Chili Pots ready and enjoy our cuts of Pasture Raised Beef making some delicious Stews, Chili, Mexican Dishes, this list is numerous.
Sassy Cassies:
Find our items under Frozen Meals, Biscuits and Yeast Roll categories. We use fresh ingredients (no soup cans here) and elevate classic dishes with a touch of SASS. Our casseroles are great for family dinners, parties, new Moms, sick friends, new neighbors, or for a weekday break from the kitchen.
Flying S Farms:
Tomatoes, Green Beans, Garlic, Sweet Peppers – green, red and white, Winter Squash available this week: Acorn, Butternut, Carnival and Delicata. Coming soon Spaghetti Squash.
Carole’s Herbs (CS3 Farm):
We are moving from Murfreesboro to the farm in Beechgrove during the next month or so. We are building a house and will be living in an RV for about 6 weeks (talk about downsizing, right?) We expect to be in the house by the end of October and should be able to offer lettuce, spinach and micro greens by the end of September. Thank you for your patience and understanding during our transition.
Look forward seeing you “At the Curb" of Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday September 16th from 5:00 – 6:30 pm, please contact me if you are unable to make delivery or are running late, please phone, email or text me so we can make arrangements to get your order to you. if we don’t hear from you, your order will be donated and you will be invoiced for the amount since we still need to pay our Growers for their products. From Kountry Vittles:
Hello everyone, it feels so good to be back participating in the Market again. I am now able to offer a new size option for a few of my items. You will see the new size offered on my quick breads and some cakes. This new 5×4 pan is the prefect size for when you want a little something but a whole bread or cake is just to much temptation. I plan to offer this size on several more items so be looking for them soon. If you would like to suggest something you would like to see offered in this size you are welcome to let me know. I’d love to hear from you. Now I’m off to my kitchen to create.

September Recipes
Market Chitchat
Grower Notes: Danny’s Greens, Avalon Farms, Hortons Farm
A Month for All Seasons
No doubt you’ve heard me say it before, this area has GREAT GARDENING WEATHER pretty much all year long. Even with hot August slowing down the growth of Danny’s gourmet greens, you can still plant warm weather crops and reasonably expect a 2nd harvest of many vegetables before the weather is too cold. Things like cabbage, collards, broccoli, and many leafy greens prefer our mild winters so we’re good no matter what season.
But we did wonder what September meant to other areas and found that it’s traditionally the end of summer foods and the beginning of fall and winter foods. Some places are just now harvesting blackberries if that tells you anything!
So what follows are a couple of fun links to “September” recipes. Enjoy and let us know if you find a really great dish that you’ll want to make again!

MARKET CHITCHAT
Many thanks to everyone who brought unwanted Ball Mason jars to the Market on Friday. Please know we make sure the jars you recycle through us go to further use. It’s a small thing but it’s one way to keep perfectly usable goods out of landfills.
And many thanks to everyone still getting purple ribbons tied to their newly cleaned Market Bags. This is an ongoing project and if the rotation bag currently at home with you needs a good cleaning, go for it! We’ve got plenty of ribbons!
GROWER NOTES
DANNY’S GREENS: This is the second week Danny has listed his max of 10 bags per week after the hot spell in August. Right now the farm is transitioning from shade cloth to plastic coverings for the beds so the heavy rains we’re expecting won’t beat the tender greens into the soil. Things like this are one of the reasons Danny is able to consistently provide the Market with high quality lettuce greens.
AVALON FARMS:

We processed chickens last weekend. You’ll find them available in the market this week.
To give a little perspective to the joys and frustrations of chicken wrangling, we’d like to share the history of this batch of chickens. We purchased 75 chicks that were
to be delivered June 1st. This batch of chickens apparently were not as robust as they normally are. After 2 weeks, they just didn’t seem to be growing and then they started dieing. There didn’t really seem to be a reason but we did what we knew to do to keep them healthy but they just kept on dying. It became normal to find 1 dead when we went to feed them. Not only did half of them die, it took 11 weeks before they were big enough to process instead of the normal 8 weeks we shoot for. So as you can see there were lots of losses in chicken lives and finances. Not to mention frustration on the part of the farmers.
HORTONS FARM: Happy to report major progress in restoring our kitchen garden. The kitchen garden is the one practically in our backyard that was in place when we moved here in 1995. The kids and I overhauled it installing raised beds that served us for many years. Time has taken it’s toll though and this week we removed all the perennial vegetables (asparagus and horseradish) from the dilapidated beds in preparation for new construction. Turns our there was a lot more asparagus in there than we realized and instead of filling a five gallon bucket we filled a 35 gallon trash can! It was nice to find a bit of tender asparagus in the process.
That was phase 1. Phase 2 was removing the old structures and hauling it to the burn pile. I’m happy to report that’s about 90% done. With any luck I’ll get that finished this week so the Mr. can commence with phase 3, using the tractor to level everything out. Construction on new beds can begin after that.
On an unrelated note we had our 6th wooden egg for the summer come up missing this week. We usually catch one or two snakes every year helping themselves to our eggs but they seem particularly cunning this year and we’ve not caught any in the act. This is one of the reasons our egg listings fluctuate from week to week.

Our COVID protocol is still in place for everyone who wants curbside service.
I. Order Payment:
1. Voluntarily prepay by 6 pm Thursday if possible using this PAYPAL link. This eliminates passing paper currency back and forth or handling debit/credit cards on site. Your invoice will be marked PAID and pickup is fast and easy. In the event of undelivered items you will be issued a Market credit that will apply to your next order.
2. Debit/Credit – One of us will briefly step within 6 feet for you to put your card in the chip reader. We do our best to avoid touching your card or you touching the equipment which means we sign an “x” for your signature.
3. Cash and Checks – You may hand them to us. Exact change is preferred if using cash to prevent a lot of passing back and forth. If you choose curbside pickup you are welcome to put payment in your trunk/tailgate as that would eliminate the need to come near your window.
II. Order Delivery:
1. Curb Service: Please pull up next to the Market Shed. We will direct traffic a little bit if needed. Have your trunk/ hatchback open and we’ll load you up!
2. Walk Up Pickup: Please do not come inside. When we see you coming we’ll put your order near the entrance and step back for you to claim it. This system works really well for those of you wishing to get extra veggies that may be available.
3. Regardless of how you choose to accept your Market order please know that we make every effort to practice safe distancing and ask that you do the same.
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
Yalaha, FL: Still too hot and wet in September
We are still here and doing the Summer Vacation Schedule. I will probably just leave the Market Open now through August until September unless something major happens. I’m still here and we still have some of the basic stuff but I’m busy doing farm rebuilding/clean up and preparing for fall planting. Contact me if you want anything listed. Or if you might want to make a Huge batch of pesto (I actually have to pull out and throw away a large amount of Basil just to make room for fall planting.)
Anyway, Feel Free to contact me if you want to order anything or make requests for fall crops. I’m here but may not remember to do weekly posting for the Month of August.
Since I am out of the normal schedule for now, please remember to indicate when you would like to make your pickup appointment.
Milk is available, we pick up Wed so if you want some I need to know by Tuesday.
Summer time brings weather not conducive to growing much here, So I am trying out throwing together anything edible (including edible weeds) and salad like into a mix and calling it Wild Summer Mix – Cut Salad Mix
We have Shoots and microgreens available.
Following is the Normal Schedule to make it easy for me to paste into the notices come Fall** If you want to place and order and pick up before the standard window, just let me know.
Standard Ordering window below.
Order now through 7 am Friday September 18th for Sat Sept 19th Pickup, or tell me when you want to pick up, we usually have flexibility, especially if you order buy in products or milk or just want to pick up during the week.
We Are Flexible, TELL ME if you want to make special arrangements for produce, I am open and willing especially now. I just need to know the day before so I can harvest anything that needs early morning handling and I like to know when to expect people to show up.
Remember to tell me when you want to pick up! (and if I don’t reply to confirm within a day, bump my e-mail or text me 407-342-8515. Though I have cleaned up my e-mail so hopefully I won’t Miss Anyone.)
Sign in to order. https://yalaha.locallygrown.net/market
You have to sign in to see the add to cart button. Then set the number and click the add to cart button on the items you want to buy (it is the little picture right next to the quantity box.) Remember you need to check out before your order will be placed.
Remember to let me know when you want to pick up on Sat or maybe even Friday late afternoon or on Sunday. (If I don’t send you an e-mail confirmation of your order and pick up time, please make sure you checked out and completed your order.)
Martin's Farmstand: Organic grapes and lots of canning tomatoes
The Alpine-glow grapes are ready. (rich flavored seeded green grapes with a pink blush.)I have about 200 lbs available for $5 per quart or $25 per half bushel. We are also in the peak of tomato season and the backlog of orders that we had is cleared so there should be canning tomatoes on the stand fairly steady for the next while. We still have lots of beans but we are on the last planting. If you are going to get beans (or tomatoes) from us to can or freeze do it in the next ten days or wait till next year. If you procrastinate too long the seasons will pass on. Daniel
