Magney Legacy Ridge Farm: CSA #28
Dear CSA-ers,
This week’s Preassembled Bag will contain Spring Mix, Mixed Eggplant, Tulsi Holy Basil, Garlic, Green Beans, Banana Peppers, and Acorn Squash. Orders may now be placed on the online market at: https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market
After a week of soaking rains, we are enjoying some splendid weather this weekend. The hum of cicadas remains on the air, but the signs of Autumn are arriving quickly. Days grow noticeably shorter while mornings seem to stay cooler for longer. We see the cornfields of the surrounding region drying to signal the time of harvest.
On our own farm we notice the changing of the seasons as well. The leaves of pumpkins and winter squash are starting to wither, revealing the colorful treasures they have stored away for us over the summer. This past week, we put a respectable harvest of winter squash in the warm, dry greenhouse to undergo their curing process. Sadly, some vegetables have hit their wall, we have likely reached the end for our cherry tomatoes for this year. However, there are other vegetables returning from a long summer hiatus. Beets are back in a big way, and there will be many leafy greens to follow soon.
While we have not been able to attend Farmers’ Markets as much as we would have liked, we are pleased to be serving more of you through CSA than ever this year! Connecting with our customers one-on-one is much of what makes agriculture fulfilling for many of us here at the Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team. In many ways this has been a year of growing and learning. While there is still much work to be done to prepare our tunnels for their winter crops this year, we already have many ideas for the year to come. On this note, we warmly welcome your feedback on the CSA and the service we provide. You share in our farm’s bounty and likewise your input on its direction is valuable to us.
As always, we thank you for all you do to support us and our efforts at brining organic, sustainable agriculture to our West Kentucky region. It has been immensely rewarding to see support for this way of agriculture to grow here. We wish the best to you and those you hold dear in this week to come!
Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

Canning Supply Call to Arms
Market Chitchat
Grower Notes: Mayim Farm, Hortons Farm
GRAB YOUR BALLS . . .
And while you’re at it the Kerrs, Bernardins, newer Wall Mart plain jars and all the new and used rings and flats you can find.
We’ve deliberately stayed away from the catchy slogan for obvious reasons, but here of late things with canning supplies have become so serious it’s worth using just to bring attention to a very serious matter.

We’ve been so busy crafting and decorating with mason jars the last few years that now that we need them for food there are no supplies. No jars, no rings, no flats . . . stores are OUT all over the country. I did find some overpriced rings and flats on Amazon, but if you go into any Rural King, Dollar General or Wal Mart in the area you won’t find any of these supplies. If by chance you do find some, post it on Facebook and they’ll be out very shortly just like all the other stores.
I was alerted to the outage when a beekeeper friend in Pensacola posted an urgent plea for help because she was unable to package her honey. A bit of sleuthing with Vicki & Kathy on Friday morning confirmed it.
So this is a plea – if you don’t can and have extra jars and flats, even used ones, send them to us at Market at Dothan. We recycle stuff all the time and in this case will make sure they go where they’re genuinely needed.
MARKET CHITCHAT
So yesterday we broke out the Purple Ribbons to identify recently cleaned Market bags. If you missed last week’s newsletter you may find the August 29 issue HERE with info about cleaning your reusable Market bag. If you currently don’t use recycleable bags read up about it on our Q&A page. Bags are now relisted on the MARKET PAGE for anyone who’d rather not shop for one.
Please TELL US your bag has been recently cleaned when returning it to us so we can put a purple ribbon on it too. This is something we hope to do every six months.
GROWER NOTES
MAYIM FARM: We will be taking a well needed break this week for a vacation to Mentone…we’ll be back next week…
Hortons Farm We had a couple of nice surprises this week:

Pullet Eggs! We have gathered three small brown eggs so far laid by one of our young copper maran’s this week. We promise that if you receive one of these in your egg order we’ll make sure you get some nice big eggs as well.

My mother spotted this on the Phlox by the front steps. It was definitely worth getting the camera out for and turns out to be a swallowtail aberration called a gynandromorph. ”What’s That Bug?” was the only place on the internet we found with good information about it. The site is a great resource with lots of photos for curious bug watchers.

Our COVID protocol is still in place for everyone who wants curbside service.
I. Order Payment:
1. Voluntarily prepay by 6 pm Thursday if possible using this PAYPAL link. This eliminates passing paper currency back and forth or handling debit/credit cards on site. Your invoice will be marked PAID and pickup is fast and easy. In the event of undelivered items you will be issued a Market credit that will apply to your next order.
2. Debit/Credit – One of us will briefly step within 6 feet for you to put your card in the chip reader. We do our best to avoid touching your card or you touching the equipment which means we sign an “x” for your signature.
3. Cash and Checks – You may hand them to us. Exact change is preferred if using cash to prevent a lot of passing back and forth. If you choose curbside pickup you are welcome to put payment in your trunk/tailgate as that would eliminate the need to come near your window.
II. Order Delivery:
1. Curb Service: Please pull up next to the Market Shed. We will direct traffic a little bit if needed. Have your trunk/ hatchback open and we’ll load you up!
2. Walk Up Pickup: Please do not come inside. When we see you coming we’ll put your order near the entrance and step back for you to claim it. This system works really well for those of you wishing to get extra veggies that may be available.
3. Regardless of how you choose to accept your Market order please know that we make every effort to practice safe distancing and ask that you do the same.
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
