Foothills Market: The Market is Open!
Tried of the same old thing? Foothills Market has some new offerings that may be new to you.
The market now has sunchokes and Daikon radishes, two vegetables you’re probably not going to find on the shelves at Walmart. Sunchokes, which are sometimes called Jerusalem artichokes, are starchy tubers that have a nutty, sweet, earthy taste when roasted. They couldn’t be easier to cook – you don’t even have to peel them! Daikon radishes can be roasted, as well, but this versatile Asian vegetable can also be stir-fried, pickled, or eaten raw. If you want a project for Christmas break, get a Chinese/Napa cabbage to go with your Daikon radish and make Kimchi!
Find these vegetables, as well as others, with our listings of meat and baked goods on the market. Browse, fill your cart, and click the button to place your order. We’ll have your items ready for pickup from 4:30-5:30 on Thursday.
Just a note: We’ll have the market this week and next before taking a two-week break for the holidays.
Eat something fresh this week!
CLG: Opening Bell: Beef, Coffee, Cheese, Carrots!
Hello friends!
We will only have two more markets in December, this Friday the 11th, and then on December 18. We also are planning to have Friday pick up on January 1, New Year’s Day. Start the year off right with some local, nutritious food.
Speaking of barbecue pulled pork, Maria has just listed some. Great for barbecue sandwiches, or barbecue nachos. Frozen so u can have it anytime.
Those carrot tops! We really appreciate those beautiful carrots from Rattle’s garden in Vilonia. Tara and her family put in a lot of hard work to get such fantastic produce! And check out this recipe: https://www.theendlessmeal.com/oven-roasted-carrots-with-carrot-top-pesto.
I’ve heard very good feedback about the ginormous eggs from Arendall’s Happy Hen Farm!
Check out all of the local eggs we have available this week.
We will have suet cakes for birds on the extras table all winter for only $1 each. We see black-capped chickadees, those crazy nuthatches, woodpeckers, tufted titmice, wrens and more at our suet feeders.
Garlic plants and elephant garlic plants are now available from Cedar rock Ridge. Plant 5 or 10 in your garden for your family. Even if you have a very small area, you can tuck in three or four garlic plants. They like full sun and rich soil. Plant now at harvest in early June. These make great gifts for your gardening friends, family, and neighbors.
Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. For instance, type in the word “sale” or “pork” and see what pops up. We have over 500 items available now!
Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!
And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)
In accordance with the current guidelines, we will not have more than 10 people in the lobby at any time. We have four volunteers who can bring your order to your car if you prefer, just call or text 501-339-1039.
The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping: *https://conway.locallygrown.net/market

Grumpy Goat: Happy Holidays!
We’ve updated the online store to include some of the holiday items we’ve been working on.
Matt has made quite a few birdhouses, bot bluebird sized and smaller wren sized ones.
He has also stocked up on barnwood trees, which some of you might remember from last year. These are great table toppers or on the mantle. Some are more rustic than others but they add a nice whimsy to the decor.
We have also added some of our hand made gnomes. These are stuffed with our own farm wool and weighted with dried black beans while being adorned with our own Pygora Fiber.
If you have any specific requests, or if something is sold out by the time you see it, don’t hesitate to reach out. We are more than willing to do some custom orders!
We are can also work with anyone if picking up Tuesdays doesn’t work. Just email us and we can figure something out!
Wishing you all much health and happiness in these trying times.

Washtenaw Organic Collaborative: Special Holiday Market (Order now thru Dec. 16th for pickup Dec. 19th)
* HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE WASHTENAW ORGANIC COLLABORATIVE!! *
Reminder that we’ve decided to hold one final holiday market for this year! You can order now through Dec. 16th with no-contact pickup on Saturday, Dec. 19th.
NEW! This month we are thrilled to be adding 2 new producers who offer the most delicious and most conscientious food available anywhere:
- Warda Patisserie – a small Detroit based pâtisserie making sophisticated, hand-crafted seasonal pastries influenced by travels and life in Algeria, France and Asia
- Shoreline Wild Salmon – wild Alaskan line-caught salmon and fish (*see note on the Market page for information on how to place order)
We started the weekly market as a collaboration among Brines Farm, Raindance Organic Farm and Slow Farm, and have been extremely grateful for the strong support we’ve received from our community. We’ve gathered strength and resilience in navigating the COVID pandemic by adding other farmers and producers who share our values including:
- Baseline Farm – truly grass-fed pastured beef
- Bird Dog Baking – diverse, local, wholegrain breads and bakery items
- Dancer Creek Farm – family farmed livestock
- Little House Homestead – free range eggs
- Rustic Roots Farm – family farm dedicated to bees, sheep, chickens, gardening, and woodworking
When you make a purchase through the Washtenaw Organic Collaborative you are directly supporting local food businesses (mostly women-owned!) who value sustainable and regenerative practices, the highest standards of care for employees, animals, soil, and waters and long-term commitment to our communities. Thank you for your support and for all that you do to create the world as it should be.
We are wishing you and yours a very safe, healthy, and restorative holiday season.
Hope to see you on the 19th!
Magney Legacy Ridge Farm: CSA #39
Dear CSA-ers,
This week’s preassembled bag will contain Broccoli, Cabbage, Swiss Chard, Carrots, Bok Choy, Parsley and Radishes. For those of you placing custom orders, you may do so between now and Tuesday evening on the website at: http://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market
Bright morning sunlight glitters the frost-covered landscape of the farm. Our over-wintering birds flit about the fencerows, gleaning seeds from the grasses and wildflowers that line the property. The sounds are quieter than they were earlier in the year, but still present- rustlings in the leaves, the sound of gentle winds blowing. Days are short as the farm stands at the precipice of winter.
Yet there is still so much life! Diligent frost clothing and careful selection of our Fall varieties has resulted in a surprisingly robust set of crops; both inside and outside of the high tunnels. Even many of the unused beds are verdant green with our soil nurturing cover crops, rye and crimson clover. The dividends of nurturing the ecosystem with organic practices seem to be paying off. Many crops we have grown but struggled with in the past are performing better than they ever have before.
Our featured vegetable this week is one of those difficult performers. Broccoli has been a heartbreaker for us in the past. Its tender green flower buds are so delicious, but it seems tragically ill-suited to Kentucky’s climate and insect pressure. We thought we were on track this summer, only to have a crop devastated by an abrupt onset of the peskersome harlequin beetle right before producing. We persisted. We made some adjustments to our spacing and nutrition for the Fall. Though we were a bit late on planting, the plants came in strong. It will always be a challenge to grow such a nutritionally demanding crop with organic amendments, and likewise florets may still be smaller than you are used to seeing at groceries- but nevertheless, we are so pleased to be putting portions of our organic broccoli in your bags this week. Enjoy it roasted, stir-fried, steamed, or perhaps in a hearty broccoli cheddar soup!
As always, we would like to thank you for your enduring support of our farm. This CSA is the next to last for 2020. This has been a trying year in many ways, but your participation and enthusiasm has inspired us to persevere. Together we are a stronger farm, and a stronger community!
Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse:
Houseplant lovers and giftgivers! Take a look at the Houseplant category this week! Dogwood Valley Greenhouse now has available a few pink Christmas cacti – or actually Thanksgiving cacti. The plants may be a little small right now, but each one I sell will have several blooms and buds coming. Give them a nice light place (sunny south windowsill in the winter, or better yet, 14 hours of fluorescent light, about 18 inches above the plant), don’t overwater them, and they will bloom beautifully for you! Please note that I’ve included a couple of smaller-growing (miniature and semi-mini) plants in this new group. I don’t have many of these new varieties yet, but there will be more on the market as they grow. Your old favorites will also still be available from time to time, as their bloom cycle allows.
I’m also still taking orders for beautiful live Christmas wreaths and kissing balls. Get yours now before I run out of materials!

Please pray for a restoration of health and for patience while she undergoes necessary procedures. Also pray for the skill of her doctors, and for strength and patience for her husband and son to walk this path with her.
If you would like to help with her mounting medical bills, there is a donation account in the name of Bonita Underwood (Bonita is Molly’s daughter) at First National Bank of Middle Tennessee. If you want to donate in person there are branches in Morrison, McMinnville, Viola, Murfreesboro, and Woodbury. She also has PayPal: @bunderwood90 and Cashapp: $BonitaUnderwood if you can’t get to one of the branches. Anything donated through those apps will go directly to the bank account for Molly. If you’re not able to donate just please say a prayer for her. It’s going to be a long hard road for her. Thank you.

Christmas Open House
Market Chitchat & Grower Notes
COUNTDOWN TO SATURDAY
This is our last newsletter before next week’s Christmas Open House at Dothan Nurseries on Saturday, December 12. Our Market farmers will be hosting an old timey winter Farmer’s Market along with the food, giveaways and festivities Dothan Nurseries is having. Unline previous Christmas Open House events, this one takes place for the bulk of the day to allow time and space for people to safely enjoy the festivities. So YOU ARE INVITED! We will be spaced apart, masked and observing social distancing.

The Nursery festivities will be from 9am to 3 pm and our Market vendors plan to be there from 9 am to 1 pm or longer. The following vendors are preparing to participate:
Avalon Farms | Casa Perdido | D’s Jellies |
Eagle Grove Services | Between the Rows | Hortons Farm |
Martin Teas | Lewis Farms | Mt. Moriah Farm |
Mayim Farm | Sweet Acres | Ward Goodies |
Richter Farms | Sweet Macroon Treats |
MARKET CHITCHAT & GROWER NOTES
To eliminate any confusion, we are having regular orders and regular pickup on Friday this week so our customers who are not able or do not wish to deal with crowds can order without any disruptions.
Today’s newsletter is the first of the last two ordering cycles for 2020. We will shut down for Christmas Break after Market Pickup on Friday, Dec. 18 and will reopen for orders on January 2, 2021.
Starting January 2021 we are eliminating the Footnotes section of our weekly newsletter. While the information is valuable, it is also on our website, much of it in several places! With the main focus of the newsletter being education and weekly updates we feel that reducing it to a link would better serve everyone.
MAYIM FARMS: Add some spice to that special someones life this season with a basket of homemade goodies…herbal salts, sweet relish, Our Daily Dash spices, cotton dish cloths and pot handles…all hand crafted on Mayim Farm. editors note – Greg and Carrol will be present next Saturday at Open House.
D’S JELLIES: We are so excited to be on site at Dothan Nurseries for Christmas Open House! I will have Mayhaw Jelly, Hot Pepper Jelly, and BlackBerry Jelly. Jellies are unique gifts….delicious, too! I hope to see familiar faces as well as new faces as we celebrate Christmas. Thank you to my customers for another year of support.
AVALON FARMS:

Here we go again with another “let’s try this and see what happens” experiment in our new greenhouse. Tomatoes in containers are covered with row cover, helping them to survive the two hard 6 hour freezes at 26 degrees. They seem to be okay! There’s not really enough daylight hours this time of year for them to produce well. But, hey, they are alive…. Unlike the broccoli plants out in the field. They look bit by the cold months.

Our COVID protocol is still in place for everyone who wants curbside service.
I. Order Payment:
1. Voluntarily prepay by 6 pm Thursday if possible using this PAYPAL link. This eliminates passing paper currency back and forth or handling debit/credit cards on site. Your invoice will be marked PAID and pickup is fast and easy. In the event of undelivered items you will be issued a Market credit that will apply to your next order.
2. Debit/Credit – One of us will briefly step within 6 feet for you to put your card in the chip reader. We do our best to avoid touching your card or you touching the equipment which means we sign an “x” for your signature.
3. Cash and Checks – You may hand them to us. Exact change is preferred if using cash to prevent a lot of passing back and forth. If you choose curbside pickup you are welcome to put payment in your trunk/tailgate as that would eliminate the need to come near your window.
II. Order Delivery:
1. Curb Service: Please pull up next to the Market Shed. We will direct traffic a little bit if needed. Have your trunk/ hatchback open and we’ll load you up!
2. Walk Up Pickup: Please do not come inside. When we see you coming we’ll put your order near the entrance and step back for you to claim it. This system works really well for those of you wishing to get extra veggies that may be available.
3. Regardless of how you choose to accept your Market order please know that we make every effort to practice safe distancing and ask that you do the same.
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
