Thank you for choosing Northeast Georgia Locally Grown as a way to support your local producers. This online farmers market allows you to buy directly from multiple farms committed to chemical-free and local produce all year long! CHEMICAL-FREE means produce and pastures grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides. LOCAL means within 80 miles from the market pickup locations (usually much much closer). Do you know someone who grows chemical-free food in the area? Get them in touch with us. Know someone who wants fresh food? Spread the word. Put the two together, and that’s growing organically!
PICKUP TIME is Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m.
If you do not get an email ORDER CONFIRMATION right after you order then your order is NOT complete. Log back in and your order might still be there waiting for you to check out! If you have any trouble or questions at all, we are here to help; simply reply to this email.
COVID19: Thanks for recognizing we can all do our part in operating in the safest way possible. Be on the lookout for the order reminder email with any changes to pickup or ways you can help minimize risk for our volunteers and each other. Thanks for your support!*

Martin's Farmstand: Apple and sweet potato stories
Hello everyone. Today I have some stories for you to enjoy. About 30 years ago when we we bought the farm that my Dad lives at there was an old orchard (estimated that it was planted in the late 1800s) in the pasture. It was all grown up with brush. We cleared it out and pruned the trees and also planted a few acres of new orchard with a mix of heirloom and modern kinds of apples. In time they started giving apples. The old heirloom apples as a whole give reasonably nice apples with no chemicals. That can not be said for most of the other trees we planted. Over time Grandpa has been grafting and has changed most of the trees to better kinds. The original old Blue Pearman tree is a pretty big tree. This year it give 44 bushels (1800 lbs.) of nice big apples off of that one tree. The dry weather this spring held back the development of scab and our apple crop this year is the nicest as far as quality that we have ever grown. There are over 200 bushels of apples in storage and for sale at the stand both now and into the winter as supplies last. We have nice organically grown apples at reasonable prices for eating, pies, sauce etc. Come and get them!. We have been growing sweet potatoes for many years. They are a very long season, heat loving crop. It takes into September before there is much there for potatoes. Each year when we dig them it feels like they would give so much more if the season would just be few weeks longer before the frost or cold rain comes. This year I dug the first few rows in the third week of September to sell at the stand as I normally do. The yield was about 1.5 to 2 lbs. per plant as is normal in the north. This year it has stayed warm late so I waited to dig the rest. We dug 3 rows yesterday and little potatoes had become big and what is normally little tails are useful potatoes. The yield has almost tripled in the last three weeks and we have more sweet potatoes than I have ever had before. To store sweet potatoes we first wash and cure them by keeping them in a warm place (80-90 degrees) for a week or 10 days. After that they store in a warm dry space (50-70 degrees) Come and get them! Daniel

It’s time to train the birds to stay around your house during the upcoming winter months. Hang a suet cake basket now and get them in the habit of stopping by your house for all their nutritional needs. You’ll see more of them this winter when it’s cold and possibly snowy. We will have 5 brand new suet cake baskets on the extras table today for only $2. The baskets prevent tree rats (squirrels) from taking the whole suet cake.

Old99Farm Market: Apple Cider Day this s unday Oct
We’ve decided to hold a cider making day again this year. It’s a family affair, everybody gets to mash some apples and load the press. Start time 2pm till about 5pm. Weather looks a little iffy with rain forecast for saturday and maybe sunday. Please RSVP to [email protected] if you plan to come. Bring a jug or two for your take home cider.
Our pawpaws tree fruit is ripe! Tis a bountiful harvest that won’t last long. What’s a pawpaw you say? A fruit the size of a small pear, with green skin and yellow custard-like flesh. It tastes like a cross between banana and mango. Very pleasant. You cut the fruit in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon: so it comes in its own cup!
Asian Pears are also ripe, a crunchy sweet fruit like an apple with a flavour of it’s own.
We rendered lard this week, so if you’re looking for organic lard for fries or baking, now is the time. 400ml tubs or 1 L jars. Price is $1/100ml. I price it that way because the jars are different sizes.
Keep well, remember “pay your farmer now or your pharmacist later”. Eat well, stay healthy, stay disease free.
