Honey has been shown to lessen symptoms of sore throat and suppress cough. Several studies have shown the benefits of honey when used for respiratory symptoms. You can read more with a quick search of WebMD or Mayo Clinic online. Recommended methods of taking honey include eating a spoonful of honey and allowing it to trickle down your throat as you slowly swallow or adding honey to a warm cup of tea. As a reminder, honey is not recommended for infants under 1 year of age. While honey is not a cure for the cold or flu, it can sure help make the symptoms more bearable. Champaign, OH: Spooky
In the cool of the evenin’ when eveythin’ is gettin’ kind of groovy…
(Atlanta Rhythm Section)
As we groove through October, everything is leading up to Halloween, fun, leaves getting all crunchy, spookiness…all the great stuff of the month!!
I was just at my childhood home, last night, for a family dinner, with visiting relatives, my parents, my brother…just driving there, through tree lined roads, and pulling up in the driveway, was a flashback to the 70s and early 80s when Sunday dinner, especially in the autumn months, was required. I got to skip them, when I was away at college, and then when I moved to California, and beyond, but last night, it was just a huge wave of nostalgia hitting me.
Growing up, we lived just down the street from my grandparents, and usually on Wednesday nights, dinner was at their house. All of us, gathered at their table. Sundays, were at our house, and while a lot of our life, back then, was rather chaotic…you could always take comfort that there would be Sunday dinner. While we were the polar opposite of a Norman Rockwell painting, it was our tradition.
As we sat around the table, it was a lot of the same. Like we had never left. I was still getting the eye from my mother for talking too much, too loud, laughing too loud. My brother, as usual, could do not wrong…lol…the meat had been in the oven too long, and was dry, but the people around the table were what was important.
I left as it was turning dusk, driving home while gazing at the beautiful moon, thinking back to those endless Sunday dinners of my youth, and smiling at how comfort comes running back, years later.
I talked about this market to my aunt, who is in from out of town, and she loved hearing about it, how it’s grown, what I do, vendor stories, customer stories…and, it made me so proud, and full of comfort, to talk about how far we have all come in this market.
Much like going home, again…this market gives that same feeling…comfort, when needed, and every Thursday is our tradition. Picking up orders, having a chat, a wave, a laugh…catching up, and sending you off for the week.
Everything’s getting a little groovy, a little crazy leading up to Halloween. This market, is the dependable comfort point.
It’s Monday, and there is plenty of time to get those orders in…
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Market News
This is right about when the first frosts come to North Georgia, but it looks like we’ve got a nice warm week ahead of us. Good news for the summer crops, which get to hang on just a little bit longer. I wouldn’t dawdle on snapping up the spicy peppers, okra, and eggplant, because they really won’t be around much longer. Many of our growers produce year-round in greenhouses or high tunnels, but those three things generally don’t do so well in those conditions. Most of the slicing tomatoes left us a few weeks ago, but they’ll get replaced with cherry and salad tomatoes, which do grow fairly well under cover here. And of course those leafy greens will keep right on going through Spring.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you at our market’s home on Tallassee Road!
We are still getting new customers every week (and we love seeing new faces!) so for all of you you can find a detailed run-down of how Thursdays go on our website here: https://athens.locallygrown.net/faq#7
Other Area Farmers Markets
If ALG doesn’t have everything you need, please support our growers at the other markets that are now back up and running, or at their own locations. The Comerian takes online orders for Saturday pickup at the bakery here: https://www.thecomerian.com/online-ordering. The Athens Farmers Market is holding their Saturday market once again in Bishop Park and Wednesdays at Creature Comforts. They’re still operating under pandemic rules, so you’ll want to read up on all the changes on their website, http://athensfarmersmarket.net. The West Broad Farmers Market is back, holding a drive through market just like us (and using my software too, so it’ll be nice and familiar). You can join them at https://wbfm.locallygrown.net. The Saturday market in Comer has also returned. They’re small, but sometimes an early Saturday drive to Comer is just what the soul needs. And of course Collective Harvest is going strong over at https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
