Berea Gardens:  Market Open!

Howdy All,

We have some great fresh veggies for you this week to help you detox from all of the gastronomic goriness you may have exposed yourself to with weekend festivities.

Lots of good broccoli available this week; did you know that it contains more vitamin C than oranges? Just the stuff to bolster the immune system for the colder weather coming on.

Our first freeze is predicted for Wednesday morning, and along with it will come the end of our pepper harvest. We are not concerned by this, because with every weather change on a diversified farm we experience both bad effects…and blessings. The frost will sweeten our Kale and Brussels Sprouts(coming on soon) and the rest of our cabbage and broccoli crop will also gain a taste benefit. It also brings an end to some of the pernicious summer weeds that have thrived during our mild October, greatly simplifying my work load.

We expect a full slate of vendors this week, bringing you the best products available in our region.

Blessings,
Bob & Lynnita

Some of Our Grower’s News:

Introducing several New Growers that have joined the market:

Rus-T-Acres: We are a hard-working couple who care very much about our livestock. We have been raising cattle together for 18 years; and my husband, his entire life. Our beef are Black Angus and pasture raised. We will be supplying non-hormonal and non-steroidal beef.
Available this week:
Chuck Roast, Rib Eye Steak, Sirloin Steak, T-Bone Steak and Ground Beef. We will soon have more cuts available.

Beaded Beauty: Young. local artisan creating unique beaded jewelry for clients of all ages. Designs/products can be premade or custom ordered for length and color scheme.

Handmade by Andrea: I make a variety of items and my focus right now is Christmas themed items. I have Christmas stockings and fabric gift bags. I also make crocheted cowls/scarves.

From some of Our Growers:

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: It’s Christmas time in Tennessee! Well, not really, but it is time to put in your order for decorations from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse. This year I will be selling at Wildwood Christmas Tree Farm in Woodbury, and I want to be sure to reserve enough decorations for all my local friends.

So here is how this will work: prepay the total cost now, and reserve a delivery date. Note: it will be easier for me to fill your order on a later date. I promise I will not run out of wreaths and kissing balls, but it’s hard to make as many as are wanted early in the season. They should last about a month if outside, and will be just as beautiful after Christmas as before. Delivery will begin the first Wednesday of December and continue till all orders are filled. Order and pay now, pick up and enjoy in December. Coming in a month or so: Christmas cacti and African violets, both with foil florist pot wrap.

Quarter Spring Farm: we have a full selection of pasture raised chickens and chicken cuts. Our birds are grown in pasture, making them healthier and tastier than mass-produced, commercially raised chickens. We also have goat milk soaps, reusable cloth napkins, and lotion bars available on the market. Happy shopping :)

Sing Bee Honey: Fall is in the air! It is time for fall festivals, warm sweaters, and backyard fires. But, are you ready for cold and flu season? Honey has been shown to lessen symptoms of sore throat and suppress cough. Several studies have shown the benefits of honey when used for respiratory symptoms. You can read more with a quick search of WebMD or Mayo Clinic online. Recommended methods of taking honey include eating a spoonful of honey and allowing it to trickle down your throat as you slowly swallow or adding honey to a warm cup of tea. As a reminder, honey is not recommended for infants under 1 year of age. While honey is not a cure for the cold or flu, it can sure help make the symptoms more bearable. Honey is available in a number of sizes in both jars and convenient squeeze bottles. Stock up so you are ready for the winter season!

C&M Farm: Available this week Chicken Eggs and Quail Eggs – if you haven’t had this, you are missing out – they may be small but they are delicious. We have added some of our favorite desserts/snacks to the market, with weather getting cooler enjoy your hot cup of coffee or tea with our rich tasting Banana Bread with or without nuts, or a pan of Brownies with or without nuts they are chewy, scrunchy-on-the-edge! This is also the time of year people enjoy a pot of chili or spaghetti enjoy it with our delicious Bread Sticks. They are a hint at our Church socials! Lamb Fleece some are great for felting (need to know how, contact me, I’ll help you get started) Don’t forget to get some of our plants, great indoors or plant outside to enjoy in your garden next spring.

Oakview Farm: Fresh Ginger, Mustard Greens and Kale greens this week as we gear up for cooler weather. We do our best to allow the rhythms of the earth and seasons to rule our practices throughout the year. We primarily grow and harvest live plants during the warm, growing seasons and as the cold season returns, we dry and process the herbs, using the dormant period to create our herbal products. Time of year may affect what is readily available, but we will keep our list updated.

Grown in our greenhouse on the east side of Murfreesboro, we have a variety of different herbs available in 4" liner pots. Our plants are grown from seed or cuttings in organic mix. We also offer some in dried form by the ounce as they come available.

East Fork Farm: Time to tuck your plants in for the winter chill. Order our organic worm castings for plants, trees, lawns and anything else you can grow. This product is non toxic, child and pet friendly and you don’t have to be concerned about using too much. The benefits of worm castings are: fighting fungal diseases and pests i.e., aphids, white flies, spider mites and other pests that feed of plants juices. The castings can be used to rehab all potting and ground soils for up to 1 year making it a great soil amendment addition to any plant lovers garden.
