CLG:  Pecans! Opening Bell: Walnuts, Mushrooms, Honey!

Hello friends!
Please wear a mask when you pick up your ordered items. Thank you. We will also continue contactless delivery to your vehicle on Fridays for those interested, just call or text 501-339-1039.

Nuts! Pecan halves and black walnuts are now available for all your baking needs. This year’s nuts, expertly picked out by Steve’s dad. Of course, these nuts are totally organic and pesticide free.

We’ve had a few cold mornings recently, which highlights the need to hang suet cakes for our overwintering feathered friends, a.k.a.: birds. I met up with a crowd of black capped chickadees, Cardinals, a downy woodpecker, and several tufted titmice on Friday morning and I told them I would have suet cakes available for them all winter long until March 15. They seemed most appreciative and now plan to stick around. They must have told their friends, because their numbers are increasing around the birdfeeders. We will have suet cakes available on the extra table all winter for only $1 each. I think you’ll find that is the lowest price in Faulkner County.

Bar C is having a special on their diced pork: 4 pounds for only $25. Excellent for kebabs on the barbie!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping: *https://conway.locallygrown.net/market

Champaign, OH:  The Weight

I pulled into Nazareth just a feelin’ ’bout a half past dead
I just need to find a place where I can lay my head
Mister can you tell me where a man might find a bed?
He just grinned and shook my hand and “No” was all he said

Take a load off Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny
And you put the load right on me

I picked up my bag and went lookin’ for a place to hide
When I saw old Carmen and the Devil walkin’ side by side
And I said, “Hey Carmen, come on will you go downtown?”
She said, “Well I gotta go but my friend can stick around anyhow”

Take a load off Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny
And you put the load right on me

Go down Miss Moses, ain’t nothin’ that you can say
‘Cause is just old Luke and Luke’s waitin’ on the judgment day
Well now Luke my friend, what about young Anna Lee?
He said, “Do me a favor son
Won’t you stay and keep Anna Lee company?”

Take a load off Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny
And you put the load right on me

Crazy Chester followed me yeah, and he caught me in the fog
He said, “I would fix your rack, oh yeah if you’ll just take Jack, my dog”
I said, “Wait a minute, Chester, you know I am a peaceful man”
He said, “That’s okay, boy, won’t you feed him when you can?”

Won’t ya take a load off Fanny?
Take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny
And you put the load right on me

Catch a cannon ball now, to take me down the line
‘Cause my bag is sinkin’ low and I do believe it’s time
To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she’s the only one
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone

I want you to take a load off Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny
And you put the load right on me…
(The Band)

Well, this morning, on this crisp November Sunday morning, I give you the whole song to sing along with.

To me, November is that month that bridges the walk over from the late golden sunshine haze, leftover from October, to that technicolor blast of color, cooler temperatures, a time change, a shift from seasonal summer dishes to the more rich and robust late fall dishes, and also, a shift in my playlists.

Yes, just as I switch food choices, cooking methods, and wardrobe, I shift bands and music that I choose when the month shifts into gear.

The Band, this song…always brings back late fallish days, the West End, friends, cruising around, on our bicycles, cars, when we were older, the leaves all falling around us, night fall that came earlier, and dinner waiting. My grandmother, who hated cooking and baking, with a passion, always switched her November menu plans, as well. So, I spent many evenings, around their dinner table, with dinners of roasts, fried chicken, stews, and yummy rich desserts, that thankfully, she purchased from bakeries…lol. Her cooking was not heartfelt, but she did it, and I loved sitting around their table, listening to her and my grandfather bicker, watch my uncle come in, when he lived with them, for a bit, listen to him tease my brother and me, and when we were finished with dessert, my grandfather would send us off, on our bicycles, off to our own house, to do homework…

Music was always such a big part of the West End fabric, and you could hear it coming out of just about every house, as you cruised by.

The Band…I remember listening to it from my uncle’s collection of vinyl, on his stereo, before he moved off to Oregon. To me, it’s November music, communal music, dining music, memory music…

So, here we are, in November, shifting the seasons, shifting the food offerings at the market, and ready to be your own comfort, your own technicolor of colors, tastes, and textures, and ready to begin this new season, with you.

So much to offer…so much to choose from…all ready to help build your own comfort and food memories…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Check the ‘Crafter’ section, there will be a complete list appear over the next few weeks. Also you might see few of them set up on The Porch during Pickup Time. Several of the Crafters are novice, what a great way to introduce them to the market and help encourage them with their craft.

Our birds are grown in pasture, making them healthier and tastier than mass-produced, commercially raised chickens.  We also have goat milk soaps, reusable cloth napkins, and lotion bars available on the market. Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: It’s Christmas time in Tennessee! Well, not really, but it is time to put in your order for decorations from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse. This year I will be selling at Wildwood Christmas Tree Farm in Woodbury, and I want to be sure to reserve enough decorations for all my local friends.

So here is how this will work: prepay the total cost now, and reserve a delivery date. Note: it will be easier for me to fill your order on a later date. I promise I will not run out of wreaths and kissing balls, but it’s hard to make as many as are wanted early in the season. They should last about a month if outside, and will be just as beautiful after Christmas as before. Delivery will begin the first Wednesday of December and continue till all orders are filled. Order and pay now, pick up and enjoy in December. Coming in a month or so: Christmas cacti and African violets, both with foil florist pot wrap.

Flying S Farms: Farm Fresh Eggs, all our produce is slowing down! This week we have Assorted Sweet Bell Peppers, Spaghetti Squash, Whole Turnips without the Greens, Kohlrabi without Greens, Medium size Green Cabbage, Mountain Fresh Tomatoes. (Side note: Catherine had her final surgery last week, now for the healing.)

Rainbow Hill Farm: Apples available this week – Rome, Jonagold, Mutsu, Granny Smith, Winesap, Cabbage 10-15 pounds great for kraut or rolls and Kennebec Potatoes and Sweet Peppers Green-Red.

Singing Bee Honey: Fall is in the air! It is time for fall festivals, warm sweaters, and backyard fires. But, are you ready for cold and flu season? Honey has been shown to lessen symptoms of sore throat and suppress cough. Several studies have shown the benefits of honey when used for respiratory symptoms. You can read more with a quick search of WebMD or Mayo Clinic online. Recommended methods of taking honey include eating a spoonful of honey and allowing it to trickle down your throat as you slowly swallow or adding honey to a warm cup of tea. As a reminder, honey is not recommended for infants under 1 year of age. While honey is not a cure for the cold or flu, it can sure help make the symptoms more bearable. Honey is available in a number of sizes in both jars and convenient squeeze bottles. Stock up so you are ready for the winter season!

Periwinkle and Pine Company: Find beautiful handmade wreaths, bouquets, and decoration using high quality faux florals and greenery. Excellent for seasonal gifting or brighten up your home.

Sap Creek Gardens: We are Sap Creek Gardens born in middle Tennessee. Our main focus is in growing medicinal and culinary herbs as well as antique roses. We also offer herbal extracts.

We do our best to allow the rhythms of the earth and seasons to rule our practices throughout the year. We primarily grow and harvest live plants during the warm, growing seasons and as the cold season returns, we dry and process the herbs, using the dormant period to create our herbal products. Time of year may affect what is readily available, but we will keep our list updated.

Grown in our greenhouse on the east side of Murfreesboro, we have a variety of different herbs available in 4" liner pots. Our plants are grown from seed or cuttings in organic mix. We also offer some in dried form by the ounce as they come available.

East Fork Farm: Time to tuck your plants in for the winter chill. Order our organic worm castings for plants, trees, lawns and anything else you can grow. This product is non toxic, child and pet friendly and you don’t have to be concerned about using too much. The benefits of worm castings are: fighting fungal diseases and pests i.e., aphids, white flies, spider mites and other pests that feed of plants juices. The castings can be used to rehab all potting and ground soils for up to 1 year making it a great soil amendment addition to any plant lovers garden.

GROWER & MARKET NOTES

Why No Eggs? If you’ve been keeping up with our weekly happenings you’re aware that Avalon Farms no longer has chickens. This was a hard decision on their part but one that allows them to concentrate on growing vegetables. And do we EVER love their vegetables!!!

The other issue is BIOLOGY. The rest of us who have chickens get to deal with things like molting and the change of seasons – natural occurrences that affect how chickens lay. Molting happens when the chickens body diverts it resources into replacing feathers instead of producing eggs. Daylight affects laying too and the shortening days tell the chicken’s body to slow down on egg production as well, natures way of giving the chickens a rest during the cold winter while storing resources as we approach winter soltice.

Either way, we tend and care for our girls (and a few roosters) as their bodies replenish themselves in preparation for starting again when they’re ready.
