Middle Tennessee Locally Grown:  Pork - Several Delicious Cuts!

Middle Tennessee Locally Grown market

will be open for your orders till Tuesday evening at 10 pm.

This week our market highlights two producers of pork.

The first is Sow’s Ear Piggery, raising heritage-breed pigs outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine, grazing clover and native grasses, foraging on acorns and persimmons in season, and fed non-corn, non-soy, non-GMO feed and fresh fruit and vegetables. Their natural, non-antibiotic, non-hormone meat comes in several cuts:

(Top, L to R) Ground pork, Breakfast sausage.
(Bottom, L to R) Stew meat.

Weaver Farms produces home-raised pork with no hormones, antibiotics, or MSG. The meat is USDA inspected and has no water added back in. The Weaver family specialize in various sausages in packages of five links, including: Polish, Sweet Italian, Hot Sweet Italian, and Andouille. Their breakfast sausage also comes in several flavors, including: Mild hot, mild extra sage, hot extra sage, chorizo, and sweet Italian.

Sorry, but we have no photos of these amazing sausages.

Grumpy Goat:  Weblog Entry

Hi everyone! It appears that ordering was never enabled this week even though I remember doing it. I must have hit the wrong button.

It’s been a bit crazy on the farm with the sap running like crazy. We pulled one all nighter to use up the sap before it went bad and are considering another tonight.

We’ve had one goat momma decide to stop nursing one of her kids so we now have to go in and hold her throughout the day so he can eat.

Snowy’s boy came down with pneumonia , which according to the vet can happen when they inhale too much amniotic fluid during birth. That has involved shots, tube feeding and vet visits.

Snowy also had to go to the vet as one side of her udder is not working. After massages three times a day for three days the vet tried to break through the scar tissue to no avail. She will now be nursing on one side only.

I’ve opened the market for real now and will have it open until tomorrow morning in case you want to place any last minute orders! Thanks for your patience!

Weblog from some of our Grower’s:

Quarter Spring Farm: We have all the delicious pasture raised chicken you need to kick those late winter blues. Our laying hens have gotten back to work for a change, so we have beautiful blue and brown chicken eggs on the market this week, too. And we have our usual selection of skin soothing soaps and luxurious lotions.

New this week is our Oat Flour Pancake Mix – each package contains 3 packs – each of which contains the dry ingredients to make 9+ six inch pancakes (or you can make them larger). All you need is milk and an egg. We have also suggestions for a vegan alternative using almond milk and an arrowroot substitute for the egg. This Ready to Mix offering compliments our Scottish Oatmeals as well as our Buttermilk Pancake Mix to give you three great choices. If you follow our social media, this week we showed a picture of the Oat Flour Pancakes as well as one of our Scottish Oatmeal with sliced bananas as a different twist on breakfast. All of these are quick and easy to make.

As always, we have our Fresh Dry Beans and Mixes (don’t forget the Chili MIx for the cold weather), Gluten Free Flours and our Gluten Free Ready to Mix products including Black Bean Dip, Refried Beans and Sourdough Bread (all three of these are vegan as well). MT. MORIAH FARMS: Wow, talk about a week of beautiful weather! Our bees are buzzing like crazy, egg production is picking up, and the goats are happy to get some freshly picked weeds. I have something to share with those of y’all who enjoy using a bar of soap in the shower! My Grandma introduced me to a “Soap Mesh Pouch” years ago and they are absolutely amazing! For a long time I had trouble holding onto the bar of soap while trying to suds up my body. The mesh material is the same used to make a regular shower poof. There is an opening that you slide your bar of soap in and a string to close it in. All I do is rub the bar against the mesh side and BAM! I have suds galore! I have recently seen some at Ollies in Dothan for $1 and of course you can order them from Amazon! It is a must try, especially for those who might not want to switch from (chemical filled) body wash to a bar of soap!
