Berea Gardens: Market Open
Hi Friends,
The market is now opening for orders until 9 AM Tuesday. Our selection is down a little this week as we transition out of our spring crops and enter the summer season, but don’t let that keep you from coming by the market this week. Tom and Kenny are increasing with variety and volume and although their stuff is not listed here, you are sure to find lots of good stuff. Melody, as always, will have lots of good treats, too. We will be very busy this week trying to keep up with blueberry picking. Some of these beautiful gems will be in the muffins Lynnita is baking this week.
Blessings,
Bob and Lynnita

We look forward seeing you on the Porch this Wednesday, June 22th from 5-6:15 pm, with deliveries following. Know that our growers have the hour prior to get their products organized so things might be a bit hectic (and crowded) if
you come early.

Grower’s News:
Bean Man: Happy Father’s Day! We trust everyone is enjoying the somewhat cooler weather.
We have our full selection of Fresh, Non GMO, Gluten Free products available for you this week. Don’t overlook our Cassava and Coconut Bread Mixes with each package containing 2 packs of dry ingredients (you supply the wet ingredients) to make 1.5+ pound delicious loaves of shortbread which can be sliced thick or thin to your preference. If you prefer a taller loaf more suited to a sandwich, just use a more narrow loaf pan such as the disposable 3.5 wide x 8 long ones found at the grocery store which increase the height from 2.5" to about 3.5". For those looking to reduce carbs, the Coconut Bread checks in at 2.4 net carbs per slice based on 10 slices per loaf and you can reduce the count further with thinner slices. Due to schedule, we won’t be offering the baked loaves this week but they’ll be back soon!
If you’re looking for an easy and light snack, check out our Black Bean Dip Mix – each package comes with 4 packs with each pack making about 3.5 cups of dip – all you need is water and salsa. You can also have sour cream as a side or thin topping if preferred. If you are Gluten Free, try “On The Border” chips found in the grocery store – we’ve tried several and these are really good.
RC Farms: Along with a great assortment of produce and BEEF we now have some popular fruit available and more to come. Find Cantaloupes, Peaches & Cream Corn and Peaches this week. We’ve restocked our Beef selections.
Terry’s Treasures: I have started making beautiful hand painted vases that will let you showcase your own beautiful flowers. Several different color designs or you can request your own color.
Quarter Spring Farm: we have a plethora of plump chickens for your culinary escapades. We just finished processing our first batch of the year, so these are some fine fresh fowl. We also have our usual assortment of skin softening soaps and lotions. And we just introduced a brand new scent of lotion: coconut lime. Now you can smell like the beach, even if you’re actually stuck inland with the rest of us.
Sow’s Ear Piggery: we are back on the market this week with ‘NEW’ Non-GMO pork products, including pork tenderloin, cutlets, and chops, as well as roasts, ground pork, and mild pork sausage (no MSG).
You will notice some packaging changes with the ground products, as our butcher was unable to source the typically tube-like sleeves we are accustomed to getting. Also, this order was from a pig with a higher fat percentage due to its heritage breeding. In the past, if you have needed to add a little oil to fry our sausage or ground pork, this will not be necessary. In fact, you will be able to drain a couple of tablespoons of oil from your skillet. This rendered lard is excellent for sauteing garlic, onions, mushrooms, or cooking eggs. Studies have shown that outdoor, pasture-raised pigs have higher omega 3 and lower saturated fat than commercial pork raised in warehouses on concrete with no access to foraging. As always, Sow’s Ear Piggery pork is non-GMO fed and USDA inspected.
Carole’s Herbs (CS3 Farm): We’ve got onions, radicchio, and giant red mustard! Also check out our pestos, gourmet mustards, and our beautiful wildflower arrangements.
Flying S Farms: This week we have our Fresh Farm Chicken Eggs, Green Garlic Bulbs, Yellow Straight neck Squash, Cucumbers, Onions and Potatoes, Sour Dough Breads, Plain and the our Wheat Bread is Back. Few popular Jams are back with more to come this week – Just Strawberry, Seriously HOT Strawberry, Habanero Peach, Muscadine Grape Jelly and more!
Thank you and have a wonderful rest of your weekend!

GROWER & MARKET NOTES
Welcome Alabama Homestead! Alabama Homestead is a very small inner city farm run by a Master Gardner who utilizes organic practices to produce high quality culinary & medicinal herbs. Some may know Christine Springis from her lectures on diy vermiculture composting which she incorporates into her gardening. She will be offering a variety of herbs, medicinals and hopefully a few vegetables on down the road.
New & Relisted Products
RICHTER FARMS: Thank you everyone for your prayers, notes and concern for me after my car accident. As some of you know my right wrist was severely broken and I have not been able to participate in the market. Good news is I am now in Physical Therapy and getting stronger each week. I have included a picture of my x-ray so you can see how extensive the break was and now with a titanium plate I’m officially a “bionic farmer” ! I look forward to seeing everyone soon. Viki Richter
AVALON FARMS: This is heating up to be a really hot summer. Our little weather station has been recording temperatures over 95 most days, with a heat index of 108. Always thankful for some clouds and a breeze. These temperatures are way too much for snap peas and lettuce. I’m still hoping the sprouting broccoli might manage to make, but don’t hold your breath.
The earliest spaghetti squash are looking nice. (They like heat. Ha ha)
Elephant Garlic is drying under the pole barn. Yeah! The other garlic is not looking great, too hot and wet. I think there is some rot going on. We’ll harvest them in a couple of weeks.
Speaking of Elephant Garlic I’m trying this recipe.
Elephant Toes (Baked Elephant Garlic)
Baked cloves of the giant elephant garlic, lightly salted and spread on sandwiches or crackers. Also great in vegetables, potatoes or pasta and on meats. Recipe from The Lazy Gastronome.
Ingredients
1 full head elephant garlic
3 Tablespoons olive oil
salt to taste
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350° -
Elephant garlic has much larger cloves than regular. Separate those cloves and lay them, unpeeled, in a small baking dish.
Drizzle with olive oil and bake until the cloves are fork tender. Remember the small ones will get done first, so watch them and remove them when they are done.
Once they are soft, remove them from the oven and add some salt to the top. Let them cool before you try to handle them. Carefully remove the skins and the hard ends.
Slice or mash the cloves and serve with crackers. Or store in the refrigerator to use in potatoes, on meats, with vegetables or as a sandwich spread.
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

I want to keep all of MCLG’s loyal customers in the loop about the happenings at our local Virtual Market, so…
Many of you have noticed that the website is a bit dated, a bit clunky, a bit non-user-friendly…I know you’re all used to it, and I very much appreciate everyone being willing to navigate the site and place orders, BUT we have been working on updating it.
There will be plenty of notice before the actual switch. The site will look different, much simpler. There will be a SHOP button that takes you to the new selling platform, which is called Open Food Network.
After doing a lot of research, we chose Open Food Network (out of MANY other options) because we wanted a site that was: user-friendly, mobile-friendly, took credit cards, highlighted vendors, and enabled searching by vendor, among other hopes.
In their words, “Open Food Network USA is a nonprofit and part of a global community of organizations working to keep food accessible, to support fair and ethical local economies, and to join with communities rebuilding their connection to the earth and each other through respect, generosity, and gratitude.”
Our Market will be even better than it is now, but as with all changes, there will be an adjustment period. I really appreciate everyone’s support and look forward to a better experience serving you all and connecting you to your local farmers. So stay tuned for updates!

CHEMICAL-FREE means produce and pastures grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides. LOCAL means within 80 miles from the market pickup locations (usually much much closer). Do you know someone who grows chemical-free food in the area? Get them in touch with us. Know someone who wants fresh food? Spread the word. Put the two together, and that’s growing organically!

Martin's Farmstand: U-pick strawberries Saturday/ peak of season
We will open the strawberry patch for u-pick tomorrow (June 18, 2022)at 7 am. This is the peak of strawberry season with lots of berries out there. The average size is dropping more quickly than I expected and they are ripening fast. We should have berries for another 10-14 days yet but the volume drops as berry size drops. ( Normally on each cluster of strawberry flowers the first king flower gives the biggest berry, each sucessive opening flower tends to be smaller than the one before.)
Hours for u-pick are Monday starting at 7 AM; Wednesday, start 2 PM (no morning picking on Wednesdays); Saturday, start 7 AM. This repeats through out the whole season. The patch closes when the berries are all picked or at 6 PM.
When you arrive you do not need to stop at the stand to weigh your containers if you know the empty weight already. Also you do not need to stop if you are picking into standard Quart or gallon containers.
You have the option of bringing your own containers or buy empties from us.(Quart boxes 25 cents each. If you are buying empty containers from us please pay when you get them rather than after you are done picking to minimize confusion as to what is going on.
We will do our best to spread groups apart in the field. I expect family/friend groups to stay together as much as is reasonable to allow for social distancing where it matters. NO DOGS in the field or stand areas. We will be using the same random picking pattern that we did last year. This means that you may start anyplace you wish in the patches that are open as long as you are not cutting in front of someone. It is mandatory that when you are picking that all the ripe berries are picked as you move ( No roaming or grazing type picking. A section of row must either be picked or not picked when you leave. We will be scouting the patch and keep suggesting where you will find good picking.
Pricing (u-pick) $4 per Quart if less than 8 quarts and $3.25 per quart if more than 8 quarts; $26 for 8 quart tray and $12.50 for 4 liquid quart buckets, water pitchers, bowls and other similar sized containers. All containers are expected to well filled but not heaped. We will adjust prices up or down as needed for over or under-filled containers. By the pound price is $2.20/# (limited to bigger containers or larger amounts); By using volume rather than weight when it makes sense we can bypass the stand for most of the berries and reduce congestion. If you pay by credit card there is a 3% surcharge added to the above prices and you will need to use the inside checkout station rather than outside express options. Daniel
