Duluth Cottage Kitchen:  Weblog Entry

welcome to my little market

in addition to fresh produce you will find jellies, dried herbs, spices and veggie powders

I will list fresh produce very cautiously
as my problem is still the same: judging how much I can harvest at any given time
for a general idea you find pinned to the top of my fachbook page
https://www.facebook.com/DuluthCottageKitchen
a weekly list of what I think I can harvest at the time,
you can always ask me about vegetables, often I will have a lot more than listed
thank you for understanding

this page is designed for fix order and pickup periods
I will keep the order period open indefinitely
please type in the comment box, day and time you want to pick up

one more thing,
please order leafy greens at least the evening before pickup
so I can harvest when plants are not in heat stress and your greens will stay fresh longer

if you have any questions, please feel free to ask

thank you
your humble gardener
Eva

Some Growers News:

Bean Man:
We are back at the market this week and greatly appreciate your patience.

So all are aware, we are beginning to run out of our Fresh Dry Beans (this happens every year). We are out of Red Beans but have our other Beans and Mixes available and will keep you up to date. Not to worry, our new crop is in the field and we expect to have it available in mid to late September. We also harvested our last round of oats and they are currently in processing to become Scottish Oatmeal, Oat Flour as well as part of our Cinnamon/Oat Flour Pancake Mix and Vegan Pizza Crust Mix.

In addition to our Fresh Ready to Mix Products, we’ve added our Spice Seasoning and Thickener to the market in a Regular and Spicier offering so you have options depending on your preference. Each contains our twice-milled flour along with fresh spices – we learned about using bean flour from Indians who are primarily vegetarian and use it regularly to add body to their dishes without using wheat flour or starches found in many of the spices available in the store.. We also use cinnamon as the flavor enhancer instead of sugar. Look for both of them in the Seasonings and Spices section of the market.

Quarter Spring Farm:
WE hope your summer is going great so far. We have our usual selection of goat’s milk soaps, shampoos, and lotions available. All of them are all natural, hand made, and great for your skin. We also have a full selection of our pastured chicken cuts on the market. Pasture raised chicken is better for you, better for the planet, and, most importantly, tastier than conventionally raised poultry. Try some for yourself to taste the difference*

Singing Bee Honey Farm:
The wait is over! The 2022 honey harvest is bottled and ready for you! The pure, raw, unfiltered honey is foraged and harvested right here in Cannon Co, TN. This year’s harvest is a lovely amber color with a rich, yet smooth, flavor that is perfect for enjoying straight from a spoon, but can also be added to recipes and teas. Several sizes are available to meet your needs.

Also this week, the garlic bulbs have been harvested and cured, and are ready for your kitchen. This garlic enhances recipes without being overpowering. They store really well in a cool, so are ready for you when your recipe calls for fresh garlic.

Sow’s Ear Piggery:
we are back on the market this week with ‘NEW’ Non-GMO pork products, including pork tenderloin, cutlets, and chops, as well as roasts, ground pork, and mild pork sausage (no MSG).

Valentine Farm:
This season we are offering more of the same delicious vinegar brine pickles and some new products as well. This season we are adding spicy pickled sausages, pickled fresh green peas, spicy giardiniera, Thai pickled eggs and garlic herb eggs. We also are trying out a new product, Botanical Simple Syrups (bee balm, lemon and anise hyssop) and locally harvested Sumac Salts are back on the menu. Thank you so much for your constant support over the years. We appreciate you, our customers. Daphne

Sweet Girl Honey Farm:
We are a family farm in Woodbury, TN using regenerative agricultural practices to produce raw-unfiltered honey, infused honey, honey sweetened jams/jellies, herbal teas/spice blends and natural beeswax/tallow skin care and soap. We also provide fresh eggs (chicken, quail), meat rabbits (availible in August) and seasonal fresh produce (vegetables, herbs, fruit, live plants).*

Linwood Lamb:
Chorizo Lamb Brats and Fetta Cheese and Spinach Lamb Sliders. We have restocked all cuts including the popular Thick Cut Lamb Chops and the Big Juicy Lamb Leg Steaks. If you are grilling this summer, make sure Linwood Lamb is on the menu!

Flying S Farms:
This week we have our Fresh Farm Chicken Eggs, Several different Melons this week: Honeydew, Watermelon and Cantaloupes, Zucchini, also have large Zucchini that is great for baking or making Zucchini Pancakes! also Yellow Straight Neck Squash, Scallop Squash, Cucumbers, delicious cut in flat half direction and put on the grill, Onions and Potatoes, Bi-color Corn Peaches and Cream, Tomatos, Baked goods have returned, Sweet Breads, Bars, Sour Dough Breads, Biscuits…on and on!

The Wednesday Market:  You May Order Now

Good evening.

The Wednesday Market is open for orders. Please place your order by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up between 2 and 4 p.m. Wednesday. See the website for this week’s product offerings. Here is the link: https://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

Dorrie Vincent of Touched By Grace Farm has a special announcement: “I will not have milk available the 2nd week in July through August. I apologize for this inconvenience. My girls will be back at it in September.”

While the Market may not have milk available for a while, we still have plenty of delicious and nutritious items for sale. We appreciate our loyal customers, and we encourage you to be adventurous and try something that you’ve never ordered before.

Do you remember the Life cereal commercial from the 1970s? Three little brothers are sitting at the breakfast table. One says, “What’s this stuff?” Another says, “It’s a new cereal. It’s supposed to be good for you. You try it.” The first fellow says, “I’m not going to try it. YOU try it!” Then they look over at their younger brother and hatch a plan. “Give it to Mikey. He hates everything.” Mikey takes a big spoonful of the cereal, smiles, and goes back for another. “He likes it! Hey, Mikey!” they exclaim. The moral of this story – be like Mikey and try something new!

How about honey? Need some olive oil? A Wednesday Market t-shirt makes a great gift item. Also consider our variety of bath, body, health and wellness products.

Zucchini season is upon us. Do you know all the ways that zucchini may be used? Fried, spiraled into “zoodles”, eaten raw in salads, sauteed and thrown on top of pasta, baked into zucchini bread, and even made into chocolate cake!

Tomatoes are also in season. My favorite way to use them is caprese salad – sliced tomatoes, fresh basil, and fresh mozzarella cheese with a quick splash of balsamic vinegar. A juicy tomato sandwich made with white bread and mayonnaise is a summertime delicacy!
If you are so fortunate as to have a bumper crop of tomatoes, why not make your own spaghetti sauce? Do you know that tomatoes are easy to can, freeze, or dehydrate?

How creative can you be with yellow squash? Fried, stewed, mixed into a casserole, sauteed, grilled, and pickled are ideas that come to mind.

Then, there’s okra. I like mine sliced, dusted with cornmeal, and fried in a cast iron skilled with the right amount of oil. Pickled okra is a special treat. A friend swears that okra stewed with a jar of salsa is quick and tasty.

The Wednesday Market is blessed with EXCEPTIONAL BAKERS who produce a variety of cakes, pies, cookies, and other delicacies with which to treat yourself and others.

Thank you for supporting Georgia Grown. If you need to contact someone about your order, please call Sharon Fox, (404) 569-0582, or email her at [email protected]. We’ll see you at the Market.

Thanks,

Beverly

Miami County Locally Grown:  "You shoes, you lose!"

Shop here

We just returned from a family vacation in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula a few days ago. I have great-great family members buried in the town cemetery and have been going up since I was born.

In attempts to console ourselves about the end of vacation, we always end up tossing around the question “what’s good about Ohio?” on our way back from up north. It’s hard to leave the cool, sunny weather; the small town where you don’t need a car; beautiful woods at every turn; fresh, locally-caught whitefish; copious amounts of wild blueberries for the picking…

There is one big advantage to living in Ohio though – and that’s the growing season. It feels impossible to get a good salad up there, although sweet cherries and those wild blueberries are fantastic and plentiful. But vegetables! We need them! Deep red, heavy tomatoes; crisp, bright peppers; tender and crunchy leafy greens – we really are in the heart of farmland down here. Only once you’re elsewhere for a period of time do you realize what’s missing.

And something that came from being barefoot in all those beautiful woods was a raging and fierce case of poison ivy for my daughter. Many of you have probably noticed that she rarely has shoes on at the Market, and I tried my darnedest to keep her shoes on up there, but clearly to no avail. She literally cannot walk on her left foot and has to hop to get around – a gigantic blister seems to be swallowing her pinky toe.

Imagine rest area bathrooms with piggy back rides and bare feet – yick! Not fun. One would think this might convince her that shoes have their place, but frankly I doubt it. She once wrote a book explaining why “you shoes, you lose!”, which she planned to brandish in stores and other places requiring shoes.

Anyway, that poison ivy episode could happen anywhere there are woods I suppose, but I’m going to add it to my reasons I’m glad to be home!

Miami County Locally Grown:  Manual Labor, the Dignity Thereof

Shop here

I was brought up in the school of thought that getting a college degree is the foundation of financial security and fulfilling work. In many ways, that of course is still true. But what is omitted from this picture is the necessity and diversity of other kinds of work requiring no college degree, that are equally important to the healthy functioning of any economy. I did in fact get that college degree (two, actually), but my life has turned out much different than expected.

Through a convoluted path, I’ve ended up owning/developing/caring for a 25-acre farm, mainly because it had belonged to my grandmother, and I didn’t want it to pass out of the family when she left us. So here we are, 18 years later, and a great deal of sweat equity and financial commitment to build some land enterprises have become a small part of the local food movement.

It is not glamorous, and most of the work is solitary. But this constitutes the bare bones of doing something mostly on principle, and for very modest financial gain. At the end of the day, I am deeply satisfied to do work that truly matters, that does benefit others, even though confirmation of that fact comes infrequently with grateful visitors and customers. I am playing the long game.

My brother works for the Longshoreman’s Union in Long Beach, California. This has given me a great appreciation for the importance of manual labor, which tends to be looked down upon in our society. The same applies to farming, a very manual occupation. But let us stand up for all the people whose work is indispensable, keeping the foundation of our economy going strong.
