Market News

Here’s a reminder that we’ll be taking next week, the week of Thanksgiving off, as we do every year. We will be open as usual this week, so if there are things you’d like for your Thanksgiving meals, you’ll need to plan ahead and order them early. If you need local produce next week, Collective Harvest CSA is doing a special pre-order market (much like ALG) with a Wednesday morning pickup at their Broad Street office. You can find info here: https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com/thanksgivingmarket. Heirloom Cafe is also holding their traditional mini farmers market in their parking lot on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, from 11am until 2pm. Meanwhile, stock up from us this week!

And thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park, and Wednesday evenings downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is back as well, Saturdays from 9 to 1, and you can watch for weekly news here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County farmers market is held every Saturday 8 to noon in downtown Watkinsville. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9 to 2pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from 11 to 3pm. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Harvest for Thanksgiving

Market News

Hello!

This will be the last Market until after Thanksgiving. It appears that the harsh cold snap has slowed down the production of the green leafy veggies. They should bounce back in December. In lieu of the upcoming holiday and that Susie’s old office is overflowing with sweet potatoes, the price for them is at half price. Bloomy Rind has an even dozen of delectable items for Thanksgiving.

Here’s a link for a recipe for Butternut Squash and Mac and Cheese: https://www.thekitchn.com/butternut-squash-mac-and-cheese-262082

In the meat category, there is quite the selection of pork, beef, chicken and duck. If you need something for the holidays, let me know and I’ll see if Bear Creek or Wedge Oak will be able to have it for you.

Dozen Bakery will have pies and other wonderful items available for your Thanksgiving. You can check out the options at their website: https://www.dozen-nashville.com/thanksgiving-menu-2019
To order you can email them at: [email protected] or call them at: (615) 712-8150. Deadline for ordering is the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

Dozen Bakery’s galettes, cookies and breads, eggs, granola, honey, and coffee are all in abundance.

You have until Tuesday night to place your order.
Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!

If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

The Wednesday Market:  The Sun is Shining and It's Time to Order

Good afternoon.

The Wednesday Market is open for orders. Please place your order by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up between 2 and 4 p.m. Wednesday. See the website for this week’s product offerings. Here is the link: https://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

Please note the shift in our pick up times – between 2 and 4 p.m. Since the switch back to Eastern Standard Time, it gets dark before 6 p.m. For the safety of our volunteers and customers, we would like to get finished at the Market before dark.

Please keep our producers in mind as you are planning your Thanksgiving celebration. It is a good idea to order early so that you will have everything you need in time for the holiday.

Thank you for your support of Georgia grown agriculture. Have a great afternoon, and we’ll see you at the Market.

Thanks,

Beverly

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #33

Dear CSA-ers,
This week’s Preassembled Bag will include Bok Choy/Tatsoi Mix, Spring Mix, Lacinato Kale, Pie Pumpkins (Amish Grown), plum radishes, and carrots. Custom orders may be placed between now and Tuesday evening on the website at: http://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

REMEMBER NO DELIVERIES THE WEEK OF THANKSGIVING.

Wow! Last week hit some record setting lows! We had a chance to survey the farm while doing harvest for CSA. Regrettably, some vegetables were irreparably damaged earlier than we had hoped. In particular, the head lettuces were hit especially hard. Collectively this will probably mean that the remaining 4 CSAs will be somewhat similar in composition. However, we are happy to report that we anticipate being able to fill them. In some ways, events like this early deep freeze help us learn. We’ve collected a lot of information about the absolute endurances of vegetable varieties as well as learning what does and doesn’t work for frost-proofing. That information can only truly be obtained by experience and we will use it to become a better farm in the future.
The vegetable we’d like to highlight this week is Tatsoi. Tatsoi is fairly new to us, but hails from Asia where it is used much in the way we would spinach. It is delicious raw in salads, cooked down like a Southern green, or as an authentic addition to stir-fry. Tatsoi has a great crunch to it, and differs from bok-choy in that it does not have the “bulb” formed from enlarged leaf bases. Tatsoi is superlative in its Vitamin C content among leafy vegetables and has a smattering of vital trace minerals as well. We hope you are able to stay healthy this cold and flu season with the help of this delicious green!
As always, we thank you for your enduring support of our local farm. It is with your help that we hope to continue to grow.

Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team
