Heritage Farm : Turkey Alert!!! Please read!!!!
All turkey customers!! The USDA facility has informed us that we now have to pay upon delivery for the turkey processing. In years past we have always settled the account with them on a net 30 but they will not do it that way this year. To that end we will be assigning a value to each turkey order and billing your online account in advance of delivery this year. It will still come off the total price of your turkey at delivery and we will give you a settlement statement when you pick up your product. Sorry for the inconvenience but we can not cover the cost of the turkey processing out of pocket. If you have any questions or concerns please e-mail us at the address below…
Thanks in advance and looking forward to seeing you soon….the birds look Great!!!!

Champaign, OH: California Dreamin'
All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray.
I’ve been for a walk on a winter’s day.
I’d be safe and warm if I was in L.A.;
California dreamin’ on such a winter’s day.
(The Mamas and the Papas)
This song was swirling around in my head, all weekend. Because of the cold, the crazy amount of leaves that have fallen all over my front lawn and steps, the fleeting lovely sunny day on Sunday, and then the snowfall of yesterday.
Also, as I spent the weekend totally recharging my batteries, I watched a documentary on Netflix, Echo In The Canyon, and it was heavy on the 1960s musicians who were all living in that magic filled canyon in California, making their music, and showing the love…
Which now brings me to my song pick of the weblog, today, and to remind you that even though it’s cold, with our first taste of what’s to come in the winter, you can still be warm, cozy, happy, and love filled if you order all of the amazing products from our market, and throw on some Mamas and the Papas for listening…it will get your through.
Our products are year round, and don’t forget…if you are looking for the milk, it is under the Indian Creek Creamery heading!
Now…grab your coffee, tea, or whatever grooves your morning, and while you are dreaming of some warmer days, go ahead and warm your life with orders!
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Market News
It’s going to get mighty cold this week, with night time temperatures in the lower 20s by mid-week. That kind of deep freeze is enough to kill off all but the hardiest veggie plants outdoors. We do have a number of growers who are harvesting now out of the passive solar hoop houses, so you will still see green beans, peppers, and cherry tomatoes for a while longer — perhaps even all winter long. The leafy greens don’t mind it outside, though, and they are really in their prime now, and will be for some time.
ALG operates year-round, even after all of the other area markets close, but there is one week we take off every year: the week of Thanksgiving. We will be open as usual the rest of November, so if there are things you’d like for your Thanksgiving meals, you’ll need to plan ahead and order them early. Naturally, I’ve get asked if I know of any local growers with turkeys available. We have in years past had ALG growers raising turkeys, but most everyone has stopped trying. Domestic turkeys, even heritage breeds, have a really hard time with the heat and humidities of our summers, and so take an enormous amount of labor to raise well. As the holiday gets closer, I may get a few leads on a handful of locally raised heritage turkeys, and if so, I’ll share them with you.
And thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!
Other Area Farmers Markets
The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park, and Wednesday evenings downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is back as well, Saturdays from 9 to 1, and you can watch for weekly news here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County farmers market is held every Saturday 8 to noon in downtown Watkinsville. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9 to 2pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from 11 to 3pm. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Market News
Hello!
During the torrid temperatures of September, a customer asked me whether I preferred deliveries in the 90 degree weather or the 30 degree temps of winter. I paused to answer because even though the heat was stifling and never ending, I abhor standing out in freezing temps. It looks like there will be some low temps in the teens on Tuesday night which is right before Wednesday delivery. No cause for panic since I purchased a box of 40 chauffe-mains (hand warmers). The brand is Little Hotties which I find a little obnoxious, so I use the French name of the product. They are securitate, naturel and inodoere. I am busy sewing pockets in my undergarments and socks so that I can be fully covered with the chauffe-mains.
THERE WILL BE NO FRESH HARVEST DELIVERY THANKSGIVING WEEK.
I plan to do my best to be up at the church for pick up until daylight savings time returns next spring.
There’s quite a nice selection of veggies this week including peppers, lettuce and kale. If something sells out that you want, just make a note in the Comment section and if more becomes available, you’ll be the first in line.
Bloomy Rind has Pimento Cheese and Cultured Butter as well as 8 other tasty items.
In the meat category, there is quite the selection of pork, beef, chicken and duck. If you need something for the holidays, let me know and I’ll see if Bear Creek or Wedge Oak will be able to have it for you.
Dozen Bakery will have pies and other wonderful items available for your Thanksgiving. You can check out the options at their website: https://www.dozen-nashville.com/thanksgiving-menu-2019
To order you can email them at: [email protected] or call them at: (615) 712-8150. Deadline for ordering is the Sunday before Thanksgiving.
Wedge Oak Farm will have a limited number of turkeys available for Thanksgiving. These are locally grown heritage turkeys. You will need to pick them up at their farm in Lebanon or at the Richland Farmers’ Market. You can contact Wedge Oak for size and price at: [email protected]
Dozen Bakery’s galettes, cookies and breads, eggs, granola, honey, and coffee are all in abundance.
You have until Tuesday night to place your order.
Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!
If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.
