Berea Gardens: Market Open
I have been concerned for our crop timing for the past month with all of the cool, wet weather we have had. It has been a very challenging spring for getting things planted outdoors. This morning I measured the soil temperature 4" down and it was 47*. It should be 62* by now. This is going to put a sizeable delay on things like cucumbers, summer squash, tomatoes and green beans. Still, we are blessed to have what we do and I hope all of you are enjoying it. We thank you so much for your support.
Blessings,
Bob
Magney Legacy Ridge Farm: CSA #11
Dear CSA-ers,
This week’s Preassembled Bag will contain Spring Mix, Muir Head Lettuce, 2 bunches of Kale, Radishes, and Baby Beets. Orders may now be placed on the online market at: https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market
Early Saturday morning, parts of Western Kentucky received what might be called a ‘Black Swan Frost.’ In addition to being a great film, ‘Black Swan’ refers to an event that is so statistically unlikely that it comes as a surprise and does not enter one’s ordinary planning process. According to WPSD, the yearly chance of a frost/freeze event occurring as late as May 9 are under 2%. Likewise, this forecast was the topic of much anxiety amongst the farm team on Friday, as the greenhouse heaters and frost cloth had already been put away for storage. Ultimately it was decided to be safe rather than sorry and family members rallied to protect vulnerable crops to the full extent of the farm’s capabilities.
As the temperatures warmed with sunrise Saturday, crops appear to have been safe from freezing. Sometimes it takes some time for frost nipping to become apparent, but we do not expect to outright lose any crops due to the precautions that were taken. This is a year where food security is too important to take chances on the weather.
With that behind us, the farm is moving forward. This week, the last of the summer vegetable tunnel plantings are scheduled to finish up, and outdoor plantings will continue. Plant training is beginning to ramp up, as tomatoes and cucumbers have started to blossom and require trellising. We are not quite there yet, but we’re getting closer to the start of our bold summer vegetables. There are so many exciting things in the ground, we cannot wait to share them with you.
As always, we are grateful for your support. It is providing for you, our community, that keeps us motivated. Though fate may cast its tribulations, we work hard and do our best to weather them. Thank you, for being with us on this journey.
Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

Champaign, OH: Happy Mother's Day
Mama, mama, many worlds I’ve come
Since I first left home…
(Brokedown Palace-Grateful Dead)
Probably one of the most beautiful lyrics, and the song that tossed me onto that bus with the legions of Dead Heads, so many years ago.
I was a wild child, wanting the world, wanting everything on my terms. I exhausted my mother, and delighted my grandmother, but together, they were, and still are, a driving force in all that I have become…
They let me go, they let me see the world, they let me fail, they let me conquer, they let me be, because they knew that my strong will would see me through…
Here’s to the mothers and grandmothers who raise strong women…
Happy Mother’s Day, Bread Heads…and, thank you for always showing the love…
The many worlds that shaped me into becoming the Hippie Bakestress…
Have a lovely day, market motherhood…and, remember, you can also be a mother just by caring for something or someone, along with your furry loves of your lives, the pets that need your mothering love…
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
Caldwell County, KY, Farmers Market: Week #2 Caldwell County ONLINE Farmers Market
Good morning, market customers! We hope this email finds you healthy and happy!
Thank you, thank you! Our first online market was a success! Thank you to everyone who established an account and thank you to those who placed an order.
We’re excited to show you what’s available this week.
Here are some reminders for everyone.
As a market member, you will receive an email each Tuesday morning letting you know when market opens. Market will close Thursday evening. You have between Tuesday and Thursday to shop the items that our growers have made available for order. If you have any questions about a product, you can email the grower or email the market.
To see what products are available for the week, you will use the link The Market at the top of the page.
Pick-up for the online market will work similar to a drive thru. On Saturday mornings from 9-11am, you will pick up your online orders at the market location at City Hall. There will be a table set up, so all you need to do is pull up and someone will hand your order through your car window. It’s as simple as that.
PLEASE PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THESE PICK-UP DIRECTIONS.
You will ENTER on E Main Street between Newsom’s and City Hall and EXIT on E Market Street in front of Franklin Street Apartments.
We appreciate your patience as we work to make the traffic flow smooth and easy.
Thank you again for a wonderful first week.
CLG: Opening Bell: Chicken, Potatoes, Cabbage, Honey!
Good afternoon!
Garlic-fest 2020 is fast approaching! I expect to harvest over 650 heads of zesty organic garlic at Cedar Rock Ridge in the next two weeks. They’ll be individually dug by hand trowel, cleaned, and hung in the cedar trees to cure.
Our market will continue to meet in the lobby every Friday. Our volunteers will be wearing masks. Your order can be brought to your car in the parking lot by one of our dedicated volunteers. Just call or text me when you are parked, and we will bring your order to your vehicle. 501-339-1039.
Let’s do this again: Authentic Tamales!
Pork, chicken or jalapeño & cheese.
Five for $7.
At market this Friday, May 15th.
Text me your order.
501–339-1039
Our growers are doing everything they can to offer as much as they can at the market. Beef is in short supply, but I expect to have 30 pounds of ground beef from Ratchford Farms at market this Friday on the extra table. Lots of chicken now available from Bradford Valley Farm. Get it while you can.
Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Four instance, type in the word “sale” and see what pops up. We have almost 500 items available now!
Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!
And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)
The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

News from Our Growers:
Oakview Farm and Wedge Oak Farm are back this week after updating and restocking their inventory.
Mo’s Scrubs by Toya: we have restocked our super popular anti bacterial hand gel, named ‘TOUCH IT’, to the market. This hand gel is made with 91% alcohol and an essential oil blend that helps fight germs.
Quarter Spring Farm: Did you forget to get mom a gift? No worries. Quarter Spring Farm can help you out with one of our amazing goat milk soaps. And don’t forget a treat for mom’s dog. Raw chicken feet make a great snack for Fido, too.
Carole’s Herbs (CS3 Farm)We have fresh greens, gourmet mustard, and two flavors of hummus.
We have a few heads of delicious red lettuce! Our mustard greens are pushing through the spring weather craziness if you’d like a little bite in your greens. Our miner’s lettuce will be used in limited supply in our forage greens, which can not only be eaten as lettuce but can also be cooked like spinach.
We have more of our best/selling Apicius Mustard. It’s an ancient Roman hummus recipe with pine nuts and almonds. We also have some more of our Hot Thyme Red Wine Mustard.
Try our new toasted pine nut hummus or roasted red pepper hummus. They are delicious on breads, crackers, salads, or even soups (hummus is a great meat/protein alternative).
We also have herbal honey, tonics/shrubs, herbal teas, and traditional teas to brighten your day!
Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: we have tomato and pepper plants to replace the ones you lost this past weekend in the unexpected freeze. Since I don’t have a huge stock, if I run out or don’t have the variety you want, please message me your additional requests, and I will try to fill them. But please plan not to plant till the end of May. The weather has been unpredictable this year, with a long, cool spring (my daffodils lasted 2 weeks longer than usual!) which has kept the soil unusually cool. Tomatoes and peppers like nice warm feet for best growth, and will not really do much till mid-June anyway.
I also have a good variety of herb plants available, but with the same comments as above. I don’t have many of any one, but will be glad to try to restock what you’re looking for. Just drop me a note. I’m unlikely to have many more Fresh cut herbs for a while.
I also have some new perennials coming into bloom, notably the very early daylilies for sun and the astilbes for the shade garden. Surely you can find a spot for a couple of these beauties!
Flying S Farms: Produce this week..Kohlrabi, Red Russian Kale, Small Head Cabbage, Swiss Chard, Radishes, Salad Onions, Green Garlic and Pac Choi.
Look forward seeing you “At the Curb" of Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday May 13th from 5:00 – 6:30pm, please contact me if you are unable to make delivery or are running late, please phone, email or text me so we can make arrangements to get your order to you.

Miami County Locally Grown: Somebody's Mother, and Three Winners
I had heard my grandmother recite her very favorite poem countless times, yet I had never owned it in print – until we stumbled upon in it one of the Amish readers my children adore… just one of the treasures we’ve found at The Flour Barrel in Gettysburg.
There’s nothing more fitting to share on Mother’s Day. The power of kindness – real, wonderful, and needed. I wish you all a Blessed and truly Happy Mother’s Day as we congratulate our three Bouquet winners…

The woman was old and ragged and gray,
And bent with the chill of the winter’s day.
She stood at the crossing and waited long,
Alone, uncared for, amid the throng,
Of human beings who passed her by,
Not heeding the glance of her anxious eye.
Down the street with laughter and shout,
Glad in the freedom of “school let out,”
Came the boys like a flock of sheep,
Hailing the snow piled white and deep.
Past the woman so old and gray,
Hastened the children on their way;
None offered a helping hand to her,
so meek, so timid, afraid to stir,
Lest in the din of traffic, the cars so fleet,
Should crowd her down in the slippery street.
At last came one of the merry troop –
The happiest lad of all the group.
He paused beside her and whispered low,
“I’ll help you across, if you wish to go.”
He guided the trembling feet along,
Glad that his own were firm and strong.
Then back again to his friends he went,
His young heart happy, and well content.
“She’s somebody’s mother, boys, you know,
Although she’s aged and poor and slow;
“And I hope some fellow will lend a hand
To help my mother, you understand
If ever she’s poor and old and gray,
When her own dear boy is far away.”
And “somebody’s mother” bowed low her head
In her home that night, and the prayer she said
Was, “God be kind to the noble boy
Who is somebody’s son and strength and joy.”
