Old99Farm Market:  Week of 25 October 2020

Its that time once again friends! Time for your weekly farm update and products available this week.
The pork butchering workshop went very well, and while it was happening we had a new bull calf born.
Lots of smiling faces were abound at the farm on Saturday and it was great to have everyone here. Thank you for maintaining social distance!
This week’s products are similar to last week with collards, kale, chard, salad greens, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, cream acorn squash and turban squash. Theres plenty of baby turnips available along with new crop baby carrots and full size carrots.
I will have more fryer size rabbits available this weekend. Plenty of beef, pork and chicken available in all your favourite cuts.
I want to ask you all if you habe tried our mild or hot Italian style sausages yet? With their full flavour, won’t be disappointed! Great on the BBQ or squeeze out the filling and make spaghetti and meatballs! Half and quarter beef and pork are also available.
Please remember to place your order BEFORE 7am Thursday. Orders placed after this time may not be processed.
Pickup times are Thursday and Friday from 3pm to 6pm. If you need special pickup, arrangements can be made by contacting Nick at 519-755-0577.
Thank you all who came last week, we look forward to seeing everyone again this week.

Be well,
Nick & Angela

From Don of Fungalicious:
As the holiday approaches we find ourselves wondering who would like to have gourmet mushrooms to pair with their dishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving meal. Here at Fungalicious it takes us four weeks, start to finish, in order to produce these wonderful delicacies. We would love to make sure that any and all who wish to have them can, so we need to get an idea of what to plan for in the growing cycle. If you could please send us an email letting us know what you would like and how much, it would be greatly appreciated. This will allow us to plan the harvest for that week. We hope that you and yours are blessed this holiday season. Send your request to: [email protected] .

Top (L to R) Lion’s Mane, Exotic Oyster Mushrooms.
Bottom (L to R) Dried Oyster Mushrooms, Comb Tooth.

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse sends this message:
It’s Christmas time in Tennessee! Well, not really, but it is time to put in your order for decorations from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse. This year I will be selling at Wildwood Christmas Tree Farm in Woodbury, but I want to be sure all my local friends receive the items they want before I take any to the farm. So here is how this will work: prepay the total cost now, and indicate a preferred delivery date (not guaranteed). Note: it will be easier for me to fill your order on a later date. I promise I will not run out of wreaths and kissing balls, but it’s hard to make as many as are wanted early in the season. They should last about a month if outside, and will be just as beautiful after Christmas as before. Delivery will begin the first Thursday of December and continue till all orders are filled. Also available this year: beautiful table basket centerpieces and herb plant baskets. Order and pay now, pick up and enjoy in December. Coming in a month or so: Christmas cacti.

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #35

Dear CSA-ers,

This week’s preassembled bag will contain Spring Mix, Chard, Carrots, Radishes, Dill, Muir Head Lettuce, and Basil. For those of you placing custom orders, you may do so between now and Tuesday evening on the website at: http://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

The cool damp of deep Autumn has set in with the week’s long and soaking rains. Mushrooms appear in the forest reaping the nutrition of fallen leaves and filling the air with the distinct aroma of moldering leaves. Until Spring, the ground outside will likely remain too cold and wet to plant. Nevertheless we have prepared and planted a lot of cool season vegetables that remain growing strong on the farm. There are even some straggling warm season vegetables looking surprisingly well in the high tunnels. We are harvesting some of the prettiest peppers and eggplants we’ve seen the whole year.

The storms have caused some frightening surprises on the farm. Wet soil and strong winds caused a massive hickory tree to fall just behind the house on Friday evening. Luckily, no dogs, chickens, or farm team were injured, but it did make for quite the startling noise. The hickory will be put to good use cut apart; the sticks will be wildlife habitat whereas larger branches and the rounds of the trunk will be cured and become excellent firewood. Part of agriculture is finding the purpose for things and seeing the silver linings in calamity.

This week’s featured vegetable is the Daikon radish. Bags this week will contain two varieties of Daikon, the ‘China Rose’ (a blush pink) and ‘Icicle’ (a solid white mini Daikon). Though Daikon type radishes are good eaten raw on salads, they really excel as a cooking radish. This is because their texture is firmer; so they hold up well to pickling, soups, and stir-fries. Daikon type radishes hail from Asia, but still have the health benefits of their European cousins. Enjoy them as a good source of Vitamin C, and many trace elements. Like many of our root crops, the green tops are edible when cooked.

As always, we would like to thank you for your support of our farm. Choosing to participate in our CSA is a choice to support local food and a system of agriculture that is both resilient and sustainable. It is ultimately you who make this possible!

Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Farm Team
