From Dogwood Valley Greenhouse:

TNow is a great time to plant perennials, and Dogwood Valley Greenhouse has a good selection available. Some area garden centers have had a hard time stocking their shelves this spring, as one of the primary area sources of plants has closed. I’ve traveled around all over middle Tennessee to source some new baby perennial plants, and am therefore able to sell the nice ones I’ve been collecting in past years. My market offerings have now been updated, notably including hostas for shady areas, and fresh cut herbs for your dinner table. In the next couple of weeks, watch for additions of pepper and tomato plants for the vegetable garden (when they get hardened off), as well as more mid- and late-season blooming perennials. As always, if you are looking for something specific, please contact me, as it’s possible I have a couple in reserve.

(L to R, top): “Garden in a Vase,” Hardy Begonia.
(L to R, bottom): Bicolor carnation, Dianthus.

Market News

A special hello to all the mothers out there this week! I hope your families treated you to something a little above and beyond this weekend. It’s been a really slow week, news-wise, what with much of Athens getting ready to go to sleep for the summer. The place doesn’t quite turn into the ghost town I remember in the ‘90s when I moved here, but there’s definitely a change of pace. I see lots of pictures on social media from our farmers busy in the fields, so as many people leave town for a bit, that just means more great fruit and veggies for the rest of us!

I just can’t get enough of this beautiful long spring we’re getting this year, and it looks like this coming week will be more of the same. Usually we’d be seeing the end of the delicate crops like asparagus and strawberries, but at this rate we’ll be seeing both right on into June. And I won’t complain one little bit.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you at our market’s home on Tallassee Road!

We are still getting new customers every week (and we love seeing new masked faces!) so for all of you you can find a detailed run-down of how Thursdays go on our website here: https://athens.locallygrown.net/faq#7

Other Area Farmers Markets

If ALG doesn’t have everything you need, please support our growers at the other markets that are now back up and running, or at their own locations. The Comerian takes online orders for Saturday pickup at the bakery here: https://www.thecomerian.com/online-ordering. The Athens Farmers Market is holding their Saturday market once again in Bishop Park. They’re still operating under pandemic rules, so you’ll want to read up on all the changes on their website, http://athensfarmersmarket.net. The West Broad Farmers Market is back, holding a drive through market just like us (and using my software too, so it’ll be nice and familiar). You can join them at https://wbfm.locallygrown.net. The Culinary Kitchen of Athens has started a socially distanced winter market, Saturdays from 11am to 2pm at Hendershots on Prince. And of course Collective Harvest is going strong over at https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

CLG:  Opening Bell: Eggs, Honey, Coffee!

Hello friends!

Chickens and ducks are laying like crazy! This week you’ll find a dozen small pullet eggs for only $1.15. Those are great for making pickled eggs. And Funny Farm has large eggs for only $3.25 a dozen.Think of all the delicious dishes you can make with local farm fresh eggs: deviled eggs, egg salad, quiche, boiled eggs. You could even have breakfast for dinner sometime this week. And don’t forget to do some baking. Oh, I just thought about coffee cake with lots of cinnamon. I’m making myself hungry! Check out the wide assortment of coffee listings this week.

We should start seeing new varieties of produce every week now. I’m ready for some zucchini. We will probably start harvesting our organic garlic in another week or two. It’s not too early to start thinking about stock piling wickles. When the pickling cucumbers are ready, I will start making 24 pints of those life-changing emerald jewels each week. For our new members, wickles are some wicked hot dill pickles bursting with garlic, dill, and hot pepper flakes. I just opened another jar yesterday and the crunch brought tears to my eyes. That’s a great pickle!

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. For instance, type in the word “sale” or “pork” and see what pops up. We have almost 500 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

In accordance with the current guidelines, we will not have more than 10 people in the lobby at any time. We have four volunteers who can bring your order to your car if you prefer, just call or text 501-339-1039.

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping: *https://conway.locallygrown.net/market

Blessed Mother’s Day Greetings to all of you Mom’s! Hope your day is very special. I am opening up a little early today so that I can spend some time on honeydo’s for my very special wife and Mom.

Cauliflower is coming in nicely, we have a few beets coming in and our famous purple cauliflower is starting to ripen too. Frost is in the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday so we will have a very busy week keeping things secure.

Best wishes to all of you hard working mothers/grandmothers and great-grandmothers on this special day.
