Champaign, OH:  Anchor Acres

Good morning, lovely little local market of love customers!!

Tomorrow, during pick up, we will have one of our past vendors set up, out by my old VW, the yellow landmark, Sugaree, selling her plant starts!!

I asked Laurie to write a bit about her, and what she will be offering. You do not have to have ordered, this week, to stop by to grab some of her starts!! AND, she does not take cards, so it will be cash and carry on her end of things!!

Hello, my name is Laurie and my mini-farm is Anchor Acres (because my husband was in the Navy for 30 years and we moved and moved and finally have our anchor down here). I am looking forward to bringing some plant starts this week even though the weather is still quite cool. This year I selected a particular variety of tomato called Siletz that is a determinate variety especially developed for this crazy weather because it has early yields, sets its fruit in cool weather, and resists cracking. (Last year, because of the weather, I think I ended up with as many green tomatoes as I had had red all summer. This year I am counting on these Siletz tomatoes to help me have more reds in season, although I enjoy green tomatoes for many things, too!) The other starts I will have this week are African Marigolds, Crackerjack mix. Marigolds will benefit your garden veggies by attracting pollinators and beneficial insects while repelling some pest insects. In two weeks (assuming some warmer weather shows up!) I will have some other veggie starts that really shouldn’t go out yet. Prices will range from $3-$6 depending on size.

Martin's Farmstand:  Summer hours begin/ Asparagus ready

Asparagus is ready! Tomorrow morning (Wednesday, May 12, 2021) is the first day of summer hours for the 2021 season. Summer hours run from now till the day before Thanksgiving in late November. During the summer the stand opens at 10 am and closes at 6 pm Monday through Saturday. We are closed on Sunday. With the cool weather the asparagus is growing slowly and quantities are limited. We will have bulk asparagus for freezing in later May when it gives warm weather in the 70s or 80s. In addition to the asparagus, rhubarb is also ready along with assorted greens and scallions.

The group of us “No-spray” growers that feed this stand are busy planting a broad selection of many different kinds of produce as we normally do and with God’s blessing and help I anticipate a large selection of local produce will be flowing through this stand as each crop comes into season. Our heart is to provide the best food we know how to grow for you all to purchase and I hope to see you all many times through out this year. Daniel

Miami County Locally Grown:  Recyclables, Food Pantry, Office Supplies

I’ve had several repeat inquiries, so I’ll answer them for the good of all!

Yes we encourage recycling – if you bring back in vendors’ egg cartons, flower pots, glass jars (even including the bands and lids), I’ll make sure they get back to the vendors the following week!

We do accept ANY donations for the First Place Food Pantry any Tuesday during regular Market hours – perishable and non-perishable food, toiletry and hygiene items, baby food and supplies – they told me, anything I’d purchase for my own family in the way of supplies or food!

And you kind souls who asked if there was anything in particular we needed – pens, 8.5×11 paper, highlighters, tape – basic office supplies are always on my wish list :-)

Thanks for your continued interest in our little Local Market! Our farmers, bakers, growers, and families appreciate your support!

Miami County Locally Grown:  Davidson Returns! King's Special! And Somebody's Mother

Davidson Family Growers is Back on the Market this evening, and we have a new 20% off Special from Kings Poultry – Ground Chicken!!

And I realize I shared my grandmother’s favorite poem last year, yet I cannot resist presenting it again. We had never owned it in print – until we stumbled upon in it one of the readers my children adore… just one of the treasures we’ve found at The Flour Barrel in Gettysburg.

There’s nothing more fitting to share in honor of Mother’s Day. The power of kindness – real, wonderful, and needed. I hope all of the mothers and women who have a gift for mothering all had a Blessed and truly Happy Mother’s Day.

The woman was old and ragged and gray,
And bent with the chill of the winter’s day.
She stood at the crossing and waited long,
Alone, uncared for, amid the throng,
Of human beings who passed her by,
Not heeding the glance of her anxious eye.

Down the street with laughter and shout,
Glad in the freedom of “school let out,”
Came the boys like a flock of sheep,
Hailing the snow piled white and deep.

Past the woman so old and gray,
Hastened the children on their way;
None offered a helping hand to her,
so meek, so timid, afraid to stir,
Lest in the din of traffic, the cars so fleet,
Should crowd her down in the slippery street.

At last came one of the merry troop –
The happiest lad of all the group.
He paused beside her and whispered low,
“I’ll help you across, if you wish to go.”

He guided the trembling feet along,
Glad that his own were firm and strong.
Then back again to his friends he went,
His young heart happy, and well content.
“She’s somebody’s mother, boys, you know,
Although she’s aged and poor and slow;

“And I hope some fellow will lend a hand
To help my mother, you understand
If ever she’s poor and old and gray,
When her own dear boy is far away.”

And “somebody’s mother” bowed low her head
In her home that night, and the prayer she said
Was, “God be kind to the noble boy
Who is somebody’s son and strength and joy.”

Champaign, OH:  Product PSA

You know that I love all of the market products, order just about all of them, each week or so, depending on my need.

You know I cannot be without CrisMis’s Jewelweed Salve. I have more rollerballs of patchouli than I can count from ELM Tree Essentials. I must have all the Old Souls lettuce varieties. I need a candle, in each room of my house, from Old Farmhouse candles because they smell that amazing!!

And, one of my newest obsessions are the Wholly Rollies produced by Old Souls Farm!! IN LOVE. These are little powerhouses of protein. If I have one for breakfast, with my coffee, I am good all the way into the afternoon, when I break for a quick lunch. If I’m busy, on the road, or just being lazy for lunch, I will have one of these, and it can carry me all the way through my late dinner, and sometimes, I’m not even hungry for dinner.

The ingredients are natural, the protein is plentiful, they are local, and the serving size is perfect!

There you go…just one more product, of many, that I will be sharing, that I am in love with…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
