Market News
Our weather lately has been just about perfect for the overlap between summer and fall crops. Not too hot and not too cold, maybe a little dry but there’s lots of rain in the forecast this week to take care of that. All the leafy greens coming in will just love that! Pretty soon our nights will be consistently down in the 50s, and that will really slow down the summer crops that have been doing so well. Many of our growers extend their seasons with hoop houses and other protections from the cold, but if you’re a stickler for tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers grown out in the direct sun, you’ve only got a month or so left of those.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you at our market’s home on Tallassee Road!
We are still getting new customers every week (and we love seeing new faces!) so for all of you you can find a detailed run-down of how Thursdays go on our website here: https://athens.locallygrown.net/faq#7
Other Area Farmers Markets
If ALG doesn’t have everything you need, please support our growers at the other markets that are now back up and running, or at their own locations. The Comerian takes online orders for Saturday pickup at the bakery here: https://www.thecomerian.com/online-ordering. The Athens Farmers Market is holding their Saturday market once again in Bishop Park and Wednesdays at Creature Comforts. They’re still operating under pandemic rules, so you’ll want to read up on all the changes on their website, http://athensfarmersmarket.net. The West Broad Farmers Market is back, holding a drive through market just like us (and using my software too, so it’ll be nice and familiar). You can join them at https://wbfm.locallygrown.net. The Saturday market in Comer has also returned. They’re small, but sometimes an early Saturday drive to Comer is just what the soul needs. And of course Collective Harvest is going strong over at https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Berea Gardens: Market open.......
Hi Friends,
It is an exhausting time of year for us as we clean up most of our summer crops and replant for fall. Lots of new things are started and in the ground to carry our harvests in to early winter.
Our late planted green beans are on our list this week and we also have a new item. I planted a small amount of the petite Caribou Russet potato variety this year to see if we can grow a russet type without scab. It worked! If you try these I would appreciate your feedback to see if I should grow more next year. These are like new potatoes, with delicate skins and the short season didn’t allow them to size well, but they taste great!
Happy (and healthy) eating,
Bob & Lynnita

We look forward to seeing you on the Porch this Wednesday from 5-6:15pm, with deliveries following. Know that our growers have the hour prior to get their products organized so things might be a bit hectic (and crowded) if you come early.
Please comment to the Manager when you checkout if you require curb service, and include your anticipated time of arrival so we can have your order ready and watch for your arrival.

These items would be made by you – no resellers. This is a great opportunity to showcase items that you make or build. Example: Jewelry – necklaces, bracelets, earrings or Pottery or Rugs or Scarves or Woodwork or Metal Work etc. Please contact us through the market email – or leave a voice message for the Manager and we will get back in contact with you.
News from Our Growers:
Quarter Spring Farm: Quarter Spring Farm has all of the delicious chicken cuts you need for the beginning of fall. Get those grills out while there’s still time! And speaking of fall, we have Pappy’s Flannel shirt, one of our most popular fall scents, back in stock on the market. Order one today and smell-ebrate the season.
Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: We still have lots of green and growing things! Trouble is, not too many of them are in bloom this time of year, and I feel rather badly about the lack of color. However, with the cooler fall-ish weather (which hopefully may stay around), it is a really good time to plant perennials. September planting gives perennials and shrubs an opportunity to establish a good strong route system before the ground takes on a winter chill. This in turn will allow them to initiate healthy top growth in early spring, followed by plentiful blooms. This week I’ve added several spring bloomers to the market (astilbes and columbines for shade, coreopsis and creeping phlox for sun), joining a few late bloomers with flowers now (begonias, gauras, sedum, rudbeckia, turtlehead). Don’t forget our fresh-cut herbs, or if you prefer to grow your own, our herb plants. Some of the latter are a bit overgrown, but that just gives you more fresh herbs to preserve for winter use.
Mama D’s Bakery: Hi everyone! We have everything available this week! We have a Sourdough Sandwich Loaf, Oatmeal Cookies, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies, Strawberry Swirl Bread, Raspberry Swirl Bread, and Apple Cinnamon Swirl Bread, Blueberry Muffins, Crusty French Bread, Organic White Wheat Bread, Mocha Muffins, Chocolate Swiss Roll, Cinnamon Rolls, Caramel Apple Cinnamon Rolls, Blueberry Lemon Yeast Rolls, Banana Bread and Pumpkin Bread(with the option of nuts or not), Bagels(plain, cinnamon-raisin, blueberry, and everything), Donuts(cake and yeast), Cream Cheese Danishes, Pies(chocolate fudge, pecan, chocolate chip pecan, pumpkin and sweet potato), Cookies, Granola and Protein Bars, Yeast Breads, Sourdough Breads, and Fruit Scones. Thanks so much to everybody for your business!!
Flying S Farms: Flying S Farms: Available this week variety of winter squash; Acorn, Butternut, Carnival, Delicata, Spaghetti and most popular Long Island Cheese. The Winter type Squash are great ‘keepers’ that can be stored in a dry cool space and enjoy through the winter months. Both varieties of Okra – Clemson and Star of David, Green and Red Sweet Peppers and Slicing Tomatoes. Many have asked about Catherine – she is doing good; she has almost completed the worst of her surgery process and will have a brief break before the final stages are complete. She is anxious to get back in the kitchen.
Thank you everyone for your assistances helping with the market, prayers, best wishes, cards, delicious meals during my absence. I believe the worst is over, still few more things that need to be done.
Carole’s Herbs/CS3 Farms: Check out our FB site /CS3Farms for our recently launched culinary herb lessons or email Carter for more information. You can learn about herbs to cook with that are also medicinal and test your knowledge! We will be having an on farm experience Saturday, October 2, so mark your calendars!
The Bean Man: We grow dry beans (Pinto, Red, Black and White) and oats and produce bean flour and Scottish Oatmeal including oat flour using stone mills. Everything is non-gmo and tested gluten free, we do not use glyphosate products for growth or harvest, and everything is always sold in the same season harvested.
