GROWER & MARKET NOTES
Good Afternoon! We hope you’ve enjoyed this glorious day after the beating Mother Nature gave us yesterday. THANK YOU to everyone who got those orders before the downpours yesterday and you great Enterprise folks who graciously collected your orders today.
April 9, 2022: Farmers Market Saturday
May 7, 2022: Mother’s Day Open House
AVALON FARMS:
We are trying folks. My inspectors keep me honest. Ha ha These 2 we’re keeping a close eye on the installation of this ground cover. This will be the 3rd season this piece of row cover has been used. Baby lettuce transplants will be going in tomorrow.
Vendor Spotlight: I expect 3C Apiary won’t be happy with us for “outing” them a little, but we felt it only fitting that with the bees a buzzing and Mr. Steve spending many hours every week with his own hives and serving others through beekeeping that we spill a bit of the honey about these great folks.
Steve Loveland started keeping bees in 2017 after retiring from Forestry. It was a natural fit for him and he took to the craft like a fish to . . . no, a better analogy would be like a bee to a flower. He spent a lot of hours studying, learning, working with his own bees and became a conscientious beekeeper within a short time. He and Mrs. Anne have a heart for ministry and service and became lovely friends as well. (no pun intended)
Steve has volunteered with Aunt Katie’s Garden for several years now and recently taught an extended course that included beekeeping to a homeschool group. We have it on good authority that he included God’s original “shake your bootie” dance that honeybees do on comb to communicate where food sources can be located. In addition he is the webmaster for wiregrassbeekeepers.com.
Market at Dothan had a honey supplier (wink, wink) before 3LC joined the Market. We were glad to welcome them as their honey is produced within the city limits of Dothan, making it more LOCAL for some of our customers than the other which is produced in the countryside.
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
Martin's Farmstand: Free Cabbage/ sweet potatoes today!
The farm stand is open today (Saturday, March 19) from noon till 5 pm.
We have a bin of cabbage that needs a good home. It is still in fairly good condition however not every head is perfect inside. I am giving this away today for free. Take as much as you can use. ( no purchase needed) Pick up some for a friend also if you wish. My desire is to see this good food used rather than wasted. Also there is several hundred pounds of slightly blemished sweet potatoes that will go on the free cart. Likewise I desire for them to be on somebodies table if possible. Come and get it!
Last of all I just wish to remind us to be thankful even if it is a dreary rainy day. This mud will go away and then it is springtime with little bits of green poking up. Daniel

Thank you for choosing Northeast Georgia Locally Grown as a way to support your local producers. This online farmers market allows you to buy directly from multiple farms committed to chemical-free and local produce all year long! CHEMICAL-FREE means produce and pastures grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides. LOCAL means within 80 miles from the market pickup locations (usually much much closer). Do you know someone who grows chemical-free food in the area? Get them in touch with us. Know someone who wants fresh food? Spread the word. Put the two together, and that’s growing organically!

-Continuing along the theme of what working conditions make farming somewhat unique as far as vocations go… as previously mentioned, farmers are intimately in contact and have concern for seasons, weather, and climate, because these directly affect activities and income. Another interesting aspect of farming is how one’s thinking and planning are invested over a long term: seasons and years.
For example, one of the main principles of organic practices is maintaining healthy, living soil. Many factors go into this practice: crop rotation (e.g., over 3 to 5 years), allowing some areas to be fallow, using cover crops as “green manure”, and producing/using compost (as opposed to chemical nitrogen fertilizers that negatively affect climate by their production and use).
Of course, depending on the size of the crop production, fertilizing needs and methods can be greatly varied. Basically, any time you remove a crop from the soil, be it hay, or vegetables, or fruits, something has to be put back, because the minerals in the crops are being removed from the system. In my case, container raspberries and flowers and vegetables in raised bed gardens receive regular addition of compost. That is how I justify keeping two horses and three goats and cleaning stalls daily in winter: they’re making excellent compost! There’s a really big pile just outside the field gate that gets turned with the tractor loader bucket at every opportunity when the ground isn’t too wet—a tricky proposition in Ohio!
And so, all of these considerations come into play in a very long dance, so to speak, as I plan over the seasons and years to maintain the soil health and therefore viability of my farm production. Anyone who is seriously into farming, is in it for the long haul, which begins with the complex business of conserving fertility in the soil. Healthy, fertile soil produces healthy food, which equals healthy people.
