Market News

It doesn’t exactly feel like it yet, but there are signs that summer is winding down. Sure, the equinox this last week is the official start of Fall, but the weather hasn’t gotten the memo yet. Still, the nights are now longer than the days, and the plants pick up on that really quick. Take the arugula, for example — there are five different listings for that zesty green. It might have some heat of its own, but it’s not fond of summer at all. Right on its tail we’ll see bountiful spinach, cabbages, broccoli again, and other cool season crops. The summer items will hold on as long as they can — we’ve still got over a month until frost will put an end to those (except for what our growers have planted in high tunnels and greenhouses). So, for the next few weeks we’ll get to enjoy the best of both seasons! It’s exciting times in the kitchen, for sure.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The West Broad Farmers Market has returned, and you can catch the details on their website here: www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running Saturdays from 9 to noon. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. The city of Monroe has a downtown market on Saturdays, 8:30 to 12:30, and you can learn more here: www.monroedowntown.com/events/monroe-farmers-market. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Recipes

Lentil and Sausage Soup with Kale

A great hearty soup – use your favorite Fresh Harvest sausage and bacon!

1 tablespoon olive oil, plus more for browning the sausages
1 tablespoon bacon fat (or add another tablespoon of olive oil)
1 cup chopped carrots
3/4 cup chopped celery
1 medium onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 pinch Salt
1 1/2 cups french green lentils, rinsed
28 ounces canned chopped tomatoes (I use tetra-pack)
2 sprigs thyme
1 sprig rosemary
4 chicken sausages (or substitute another kind of sausage)
1 1/2 cups chopped kale
Heat the olive oil and bacon fat over medium heat in a large, heavy pot and add the carrots, celery, onion and garlic. Add a big pinch of salt. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the lentils, tomatoes and 4 cups water. Add the thyme and rosemary and a couple more pinches of salt. Bring to a boil and then lower the heat to a simmer. Cook until the lentils are tender, 15 to 20 minutes, adding more water if necessary to cover the vegetables. Meanwhile brown the sausages in about a teaspoon of olive oil in a small pan and then slice them into quarter moons. When the lentils are just tender, taste the soup and add more salt if necessary. Add the kale and cook for about 3 minutes, until the kale is tender but still green. Stir in the sausage, make sure everything is heated through, and serve.

Miami County Locally Grown:  The Need is Great, and we can Help!!

We are so grateful to the FUMC and First Place Communities! We love setting up in their great facility at First Place, whether for our Night Markets, or our regular
Virtual Market weekly pick-ups…

And one way we can give back is to help out their massive endeavor with the
First Place Food Pantry :-)

They are the largest Pantry serving Troy and Casstown. Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday they open their doors to 40 families each day – and each family may only go thru the Pantry once a month!! Who knew the need was THAT great?

Wonder what they need? Practically anything, whether typical non-perishables, or fridge and freezer items! They’re always grateful to get fresh produce, because the produce they get from the big box stores is often already beyond selling and markdown quality :-(

Both hygiene and baby products are always in great need – feminine and body care products, everything from diapers and wipes to baby food and cereal.

We as a Market community are very glad to have had some kind of donation for the pantry, whether from vendors or customers, almost every single week of market pick-up!

Any Tuesday during regular market hours from 5-7pm, we’ll accept donations for the Food Pantry, and make sure they get where they need to go for Wednesday’s Pantry!

Thank you for your continued support and generosity – we are truly making a difference :-)
