Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  Bonus Market #2

Dear CSA-ers,
We’re offering a bonus market this week! The market is open now. Orders placed between now and Tuesday evening will be delivered Thursday (February 13th) at the usual time. We have some great vegetables available including our sweet mini cabbages and a limited supply of brussels sprouts! Check the site for the full selection: https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market
As the days begin to lengthen and bright sunshine begins to pierce winter overcast, the time for serious Spring planning is upon us. This past week, the team has been very busy filling in the farm map and seeding chart for the coming year. Officially, seeds for the 2020 season have been ordered; a daunting financial figure by the time the entirety of the farm is planted in two rotations of vegetables. Our ability to meet this figure and start off on the right foot is thanks to all of you who participated in and purchased “seasonal” subscriptions during the January bonus market. We thank you all so much!
The beginning of the year is always the most anxious time for vegetable farmers. There are so many unknowns: How late will frosts continue? Will fields be dry enough to plant by our projected dates? How will we pay our team members to plant crops before the abundant production of late Spring begins? Some of these questions, only fate can answer. Others, we can be proactive in our approach.
That third question of making sure our team is compensated fairly for their labor is the benefit of the CSA model. It’s been a while since we defined CSA in a newsletter, but the acronym stands for “Community Supported Agriculture.” It is our belief that agriculture, particularly the sustainably minded organic agriculture that we practice, is an asset to the food security and health of our region. Your participation in the CSA allows our farm and team members to not only exist, but to live well. We hope that in some way, our service allows you to do the same. If you haven’t already, please consider committing to one of the 10, 20, or 40 week memberships that we have made available at discount on the market website. We are committed to serving you, our community, with the best produce from our farm. We are so grateful for this opportunity!

Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Team

Good afternoon!

It’s cold and rainy outside, but inside my Brad’s Atomic Grape tomatoes have sprouted! Still 7 weeks away from planting them outside but things look promising for a bountiful season.

Look in the Dairy category for newly listed cheeses! Chocolate fromage blanc, feta, pimento…

Flying C Ranch offers a great deal on their ground beef in bulk. Five 1-pound pkgs for only $24. Search the word “bulk” for more good deals.

We are normally ready for customers to start arriving around 3 PM if you happen to be out and in the area. Just text me to see if we’re ready.

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Four instance, type in the word “sale” and see what pops up. We have over 500 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

Stones River Market:  Market is OPEN -- See you Wednesday

Welcome to this weeks Stones River Locally Grown Online Farmers Market. The Market is opens 8:00 am on Sunday Morning and closes 10:00 pm Monday evening. Order early before quantities available run out! www.stonesriver.locallygrown.net

Certainly hope everyone did well through last weeks weather. Would like to remind our customers if by chance there is severe weather please do not feel obligated to pickup your order, let me know and we can make other pickup arrangements. Safety First! We were able to get off ‘The Porch’ before worst of the rainstorm arrived but it was still a little scary with the lightning and rain!

News From Our Growers:

Short Mountain Cultures: We now offer a range of Hatcher Dairy Milk on SRM!! Our offerings include cream top whole milk, chocolate milk, half and half and heavy cream. Support local milk! It is some of the BEST milk around!

Wedge Oak Farm: Back this week with some delicious Meat items!

The Sugared Spoon: Our Chocolate Raspberry Cookies are available through Valentine’s Day. Assortments are always are great choice also.

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: It’s daffodil time in Tennessee! Well, I hope it is. 70* weather at the first of the week brought the buds on too fast, then the beds where my daffodils are planted all flooded a foot deep! Lastly we had an inch of snow Thursday night and temperatures hovering around freezing all day Friday, which bowed down the tenderest, largest buds. Some of the first flowers may have been damaged, but the majority of the bed will be fine. So I’m going out on a limb and listing a few bouquets available this week. If those are sold when you place your order, go ahead and order one anyway, but know that I will be filling orders on a first come, first served basis. The daffodils will come on fast if we have warmish weather. They should be available for at least two more weeks after this one, so if you miss out on the early blooms, please try again next week. Thanks for your continued support and encouragement!

Mushamo Valley: This week Lion’s Mane is available, considered the lobster or crab of the mushroom world with a taste described as rich, buttery, sweet, and meaty…. NEW: Japanese curry buns are extremely flavorful and very mild! and Chinese peanut cookie traditionally served at the lunar new year, each cookie is approximately 1.5” and made of freshly roasted and ground peanuts.

Carole’s Herbs (CS3 Farms): Our arugula and mustard greens had a bit of snow on them the last few days, but they should be thawed out by market time…Our red pepper and rosemary thyme hummus are a great addition to salad, casseroles, sandwiches, or crackers…Try a gut-healthy shrub for great taste combined with nutritious ingredients.

Nom Noms Dog Treats: Our Dog Treats are nutritiously delicious doggie treats that help get dogs spayed/neutered. Our treats are gluten/wheat free, vegan, and full of good protein.

Flying S Farms: NEW this week by request Vanilla Cinnamon Raisin Friendship Bread. Fresh Farm Eggs, Salad Onions, Garlic Bulbs, Sour Dough and Artisan Style Bread, along with Jams and Jelly this week.

Sow’s Ear Piggery: Offering this week Boston Butt Roast, Pork Chops, Tenderized Cutlets, Shoulder (Picnic) Roast and Breakfast Sausage with Medium or Spicy Seasoning.

Caney Fork Farms: Our Winter Season schedule with the Market is monthly, next times will be February 26th and March 25th, returning weekly in April 2020.

FOR THE LOVE OF KITCHEN GADGETS

I have to admit, I’m a sucker for a kitchen appliance or gadget. And I’m married to a man who is too. I’ve lost track of the times he’s brought home a duplicate something because he wasn’t sure what I had and wanted a backup of his favorites. “Just in Case”. I have a drawer of percolator replacement parts (his) and a cabinet in the pantry dedicated to Oster Kitchen Center replacement pieces (hers). Good old percolators and my kitchen center gadgets are no longer manufactured but they’re still going strong at my house.

oster
This set on eBay is identical to my original Kitchen Center

The downside to hoarding vintage kitchen items is space. The upside is having it when you need it and being able to help others. Not only are all my items fully functional, I’ve been able to supply full units and replace parts for some of my children as well.

Food preparation is not stuck in the 1980’s though. My kids introduced me to sandwich and paniai makers in the 90’s. Somewhere in there my mom introduced me to the George Foreman Grill. Three years ago the Mr.‘s Christmas gift was an air fryer. The next year it was an Instant Pot. Last year Kathy Stewart (Kathy’s Kluckers) introduced me to the Sous Vide. I love them all!

I’ve done a bit of kitchen research and find myself chuckling over all the new designs for old standard favorites: potato peelers, salad spinners, colanders (the silicone ones collapse!), strainers, slicers, etc. The greatest advances seems to be in the electronic appliances that have a wide range of features and uses. One of the first things I did with my Instant Pot was make jam!

Rather than continue to (not) wax eloquent, I’m sharing some of the websites I need to avoid that have great kitchen products. If you find something truly remarkable (like this BluApple that removes ethylene gas from your refrigerator to keep food fresh longer) let me know.

UnCommon Goods features many modern takes on classic kitchen items.

FLORIDA RESTAURANT & KITCHEN SUPPLIES has free shipping in the US.

Williams Sonoma, of course!

GROWER NOTES

We have the best Growers in the Wiregrass! Please learn more about them on our Grower Page.

AVALON FARMS: Our products will be listed within the next 24 hours as our travel has been delayed and we’re actually not home yet! So please check in again soon. Ros has assured me that it’s ok to make multiple orders in one week.

HORTONS FARM LLC: It may be dreary outside but its one busy day here on the farm. Of course we’re working on the M@D newsletter but also have a canner of the Mr’s favorite split soup going among other things. This batch features some of Richter Farms jalapeno sausage. The dehydrator is stacked high with fresh chickweek and my mom and I just finished seasoning and sealing some meat for her to take home eventually.

Between weather and workers our infrastructure restoration has slowed down a bit. Finishing the garden fence is the next project and once that’s done I can move the perennials and start rebuilding the raised beds. I’d love for things to move along faster but there’s no lack of things to do until then! With any luck we’ll have some more pretty days soon to continue preparing the bees for spring.

LAURA’s CONFECTIONS: To all my wonderful, special followers and customers, don’t forget that if you know you can’t make something special for Valentine’s Day, I can!

MAYIM FARMS: The cold got a lot of our more tender greens in our absence while we were at SWAG but we’ve still got a good supply of collards and other cold hardy items.
