Magney Legacy Ridge Farm: CSA Newsletter
Dear CSA-ers,
Just a newsletter this week. We will not be having a bonus market as we are busy preparing for the main season CSA which will begin in March. All the seeds are ordered and have arrived. If you’ve been following along our facebook page, you might’ve seen a photo of Caroline preparing seed trays in the greenhouse. In just two weeks’ time, those trays should be ready for planting outside. It is remarkable to think that this time last year, that greenhouse was not even constructed. In many ways, we are far ahead of where we were last year.
Yet being prepared and being without anxieties are not the same thing. Outdoor plots are still very wet from historic winter rainfall. It has been our strategy to pursue very early plantings of all vegetable varieties. When it’s sunny and 68° in February that seems like the right move, but dips down to 14° are a bit hair raising. Nothing is certain in agriculture, but so it is with life as well.
There will still be a seasonal ebb and flow of vegetable varieties, even with early plantings. If you’re new to CSA, here’s an idea of what you can expect. Spring will have many leafy greens and rooted vegetables. As we reach summer, variety will expand. Some leafy greens will depart in the warm weather, but bold Summer vegetables like zucchini, cucumbers, and tomatoes will take their place. Towards the end of summer, late ripening peppers, eggplants, and melons will arrive. Autumn will see the return of leafy greens, as well as the arrival of hearty vegetables like winter squash, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower. By participating in CSA, you will get to experience fresh, local, seasonal eating. We hope that in doing so, you come to feel more deeply connected to the Earth from which our produce grows.
Though there is no bonus market this week, the market is open for the purchase of the 10, 20, and 40 week membership equivalents with their respective discounts. If you have any friends or neighbors who might be interested in receiving our local, organically grown produce, please encourage them to sign up! http://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market
As always, we thank you for your support,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

Foothills Market: The Market is Open!
This is the time of winter when I get the blahs. The weather tends to be gray and chilly, and people all around seem to be coming down with something – flu or a cold or just what I call the yucks.
Maybe Foothills Market can help in a small way. If you’re feeling a little under the weather, maybe a hot soup made with some pork bones or beef oso bucco will warm you. If your throat is a little raw from a cold, maybe you could use the old-timers’ remedy – a spoonful of honey and a cup of lemongrass tea (Ok, old-timers probably didn’t use lemongrass….). Another old-time solution to the winter blahs was a “mess” of greens, and we’ve got turnip or mustard greens to pair with some hog jowl to chase away the blahs. Or maybe you just treat yourself to some cookies or peanut brittle and wait it out.
Shop the market between now and Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. We’ll have your order ready for pickup on Thursday from 5-5:30 p.m.
Eat something fresh this week!
Green Acres Atkins: Good morning
Good morning
Hope your week has been good!
We are busy here at the farm please place those orders by Wednesday at noon.
Thanks

Upcoming Events
Grower Notes
SPRING FARMER’S MARKET
we are partnering with GET GREEN ALABAMA to host what can best be described as a Farmer’s Market on steroids. Our friend Tenita Strand started Get Green Alabama last year as a so support the College Readiness Workshop and a way for local sustainable businesses to showcase their products. So it won’t be just food and farm products! Last year’s Get Green/M@D Farmers Market was SO MUCH FUN!

This is Dothan Nurseries annual Spring Open House which is one of the best springtime events in the city. The food, the fellowship and the Nursery Specials are always splendid. This year’s theme has not been announced yet so we’ll update you on that in the coming weeks.
GROWER NOTES
We have the best Growers in the Wiregrass! Please learn more about them on our Grower Page.
AVALON FARMS: Avalon Farms

Work on the greenhouse should be completed this weekend!!! Huge one off the project list. The dream is that this will simplify spring and fall transplant production. Previously a spare bedroom doubled as a propagation room. Works great but limiting and involves a lot of toting plant trays in and out of the house. The worst though, was when some grasshopper or worm found the transplants outside. They thought it was a tasty salad bar!
And who knows, may be able to sneak in a few early cucumbers in this fancy new greenhouse.
HORTONS FARM LLC: PROGRESS! This week the foundation framework and some plumbing was laid for our new garden shed.

The photo on the left is my old shed that Michael destroyed. I loved that thing! It was built by my Mr. and sons around Y2K from recycled PVC found on the farm. It went through many covers over the years and served us well.
The new one being built (photo) will have have water and electricity and doors that close! This means that it can do double duty for extracting honey. SO EXCITED.
On a different note we are listing more eggs this week as the longer days have done wonders for our layers.
DANNY’S GREENS:This is the last week Danny will have green onions till late March. Limited lettuce and carrots are available.

I’m thinking it might actually be winter in Tennessee, maybe for a week anyway! Thank you to everyone that came a little early last week to avoid some of the heavy rains. Please be safe if there is bad weather, contact me if you can not pickup your order and we’ll make other arrangements for you “Safety First”.
Here is some News From Our Growers:
Carole’s Herbs (CS3 Farms): Check out our creamy and delicious hummus, our elderberry syrup, fire cider, and shrubs, our delicious herbal healing teas, and our gourmet herbal mustards! Our miner’s lettuce (Claytonia) is coming along, and we have been combining it with our wild rocket arugula and chickweed for a delicious, fresh, hand-picked, “foraged greens salad.“ We need to take a break from the greens this week, but should have enough next week for quite a few servings, so get ready! In the meantime,
Nom Noms Dog Treats: My name is Sandy, I’ve done dog rescue since I was a kid. I started the dog treat business 6 years ago when all those treats were killing dogs and making others sick. I wanted to provide something safe and tasty to my rescue. Once I saw how much others liked my doggie treats I went into business. I do this to not only make a living but to provide free spay/neuters to cut down on all the dogs who end up in shelters or worse. I love being able to provide healthy, safe, yummy treats while helping the pet overpopulation problem. I make them gluten/wheat free so almost all dogs can eat them. 4 ingredients in each, pure and simple ingredients.
Mushamo Valley: New this week is TURTLE-LY RAD! That’s how you’ll be feeling with these adorable turtle buns! Hides a sweet surprise: white chocolate shavings are nestled inside to form a melty center. These are especially nice warmed with a cup of tea or coffee!… Oyster mushrooms naturally fruit in deciduous forests, but our little buddies grow up warm and cozy in the comfort of Mushamo Valley….The Sandwich Medley is a mega-tasty mix of mild Alfalfa and Red Clover sprouts added to zesty, crunchy Daikon Radish sprouts for big zippity, zingy flavor!
Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: It’s daffodil time in Tennessee! The daffodils will come on fast if we have warmish weather. They should be available for at least two more weeks after this one, so if you miss out on the early blooms, please try again next week.
Short Mountain Cultures: We now offer a range of Hatcher Dairy Milk on SRM!! Our offerings include cream top whole milk, chocolate milk, half and half and heavy cream. Support local milk! It is some of the BEST milk around! Also be sure to check out our Tempeh (pronounced TEM-pay)it is a cultured, fermented plant based protein native to Indonesia. Delicious, versatile and quick to prepare tempeh readily accepts your favorite sauces, marinades and dry rub seasonings.
Wedge Oak Farm: We are back again this week with some delicious Meat items! Check out our Artisan Sausages; Tikka Turkey, Nashville Hot Chicken, Duck, Brats, Chorizo Links, French Meatloaf Links, Italian Mild and Medium Sausage.
