Champaign, OH: When I Paint My Masterpiece
Someday, everything is gonna be smooth like a rhapsody
When I paint my masterpiece…
(Bob Dylan, The Band)
Just a Sunday morning dose of love, talking about the other beauty of the market, aside from all of the beautiful food to nurture your body.
I believe that nurturing your soul, with the beauty around you, is just as important as feeding your body.
Right now, I am enjoying the candles that are offered on the market, which have amazing scent to them, are long lasting, and such an array of fragrances to choose from.
I use, and enjoy the oils from the market. I am sure that you have caught a bit of the lovely patchouli that I wear, when I am greeting you at your cars, but Laura has such amazing oils for you and your home.
And, we have three different vendors with cut flowers, and live plants. All different in their offerings, all bringing beauty to your home and gardens.
We offer beautiful artisan market bags, and there are also cute little bandanas, sewn lovingly for your pets!
I love the artistic side of this market, allowing us all to paint our own masterpieces, to fuel our souls…
Happy Sunday, and thank you for using our market…
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
CLG: Opening Bell: Hellebores, Salad Mix, Broccoli, Beef!
Good afternoon!
Our market will continue to meet in the lobby every Friday. Our volunteers will be wearing masks. Your order can be brought to your car in the parking lot by one of our dedicated volunteers. Just call or text me when you are parked, and we will bring your order to your vehicle. 501-339-1039.
Do you need bulk ground beef? Ratchford Farm now has their 10 pound package of frozen ground beef for only $6/lb. They also offer ten 1-pound packages for $65. Fill your freezer!
Check out the garden 4-pack of plants from Cedar rock Ridge. One Cherokee purple tomato plant, two Genovese basil plants, and one purple ruffles basil plant. Let’s grow!
Broccoli from Strack Farm!
If you have any shady spots in your yard, you may want to consider hellebores. They are perennial evergreen plants that flower during winter. The flowers are subdued in color but last a long time in a vase when no other local flowers are available. Hellebores cost over $20 a plant in gardening catalogs, but we have them for only $2 each, thanks to the generosity of my good friend, Stewart. Text me if you would like me to send pictures of mature plants that are flowering right now. These will quickly become one of your favorites. No maintenance required. They thrive in shady or partial sun and moist soil. Does not like drought. Shade-loving hostas are also available. If you have full sun, try some perennial purple coneflowers. Beautiful long lasting flowers on long straight stems, and the birds eat the seeds from the cones when the flowers are done.
Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Four instance, type in the word “sale” and see what pops up. We have over 500 items available now!
Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!
And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)
The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

News From Our Growers:
Trinity Rose Oberhasli Dairy Goats: The time has arrived that the ladies have been busy producing delicious Raw Pet Goat Milk. Coming soon: Cheese and Kefir. (Appreciate returned Jars)
Oakview Farm: has fresh kale, mustard, arugula and a salad greens mix on sale this week. We also have a variety of fresh cut herbs: parsley, thyme, garlic chives and lemon balm. Our napa cabbage, which doesn’t like this warmer weather, is starting to head so we are selling the crunchy green leaves for your lettuce wraps, salads and stir fries.
Carole Herbs (CS3 Farm): We have chives, greens, and hummus, and a question.
Check out our chives for a nutritious and delicious onion flavor for omelettes, salads, or dinner meals. Chives contain a lot of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
We have more forest greens and miners lettuce, as well as a few more heads of fresh-picked red and green lettuce available. Our miner’s lettuce is good as a lettuce or spinach supplement or alternative, so it can be added to salad or can be used cooked or sautéed with your choice of eggs, vegetables, or meat.
We also have a fresh new batch of red pepper hummus available, and if you haven’t had it, you haven’t lived. Well, at least not to the fullest!
Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: It seems as though everything in the greenhouse is starting to bloom at once. Here are a few highlights, but you will find more new things on the pages.
For shade or part shade: hostas, Siberian bugloss, Coral bells, some of the ferns, foam flower and its cousin foamy bells. These will all combine well with some of our many colors of Azaleas, which are still blooming well.
For sun or part sun: Columbine, Geraniums, Lambs ear, Penstemon, Pincushion Flower, white Salvia,Yarrow, and
Tradescantia.
All the phloxes are now in bloom, and all three are natives in this area. Do you know the differences? Creeping phlox (Phlox subulata) is often used in rock gardens and edgings in full or part sun. It’s a low plant to 6 inches that fills in empty spaces nicely. Phlox divaricata and P. stolonifera are both woodland plants which prefer partial shade. They are both quite a bit taller than P. subulata, around a foot tall in bloom.
The first of the “Garden in a Vase” carnations are here! These first bouquets will be mixed red and pink, but otherwise similar to the photo.
And the “Fresh cut” Herbs are beginning! This week we have available Lemon Balm and Chocolate Mint, with more to follow next week.
Flying S Farms: Pac Choy, Radishes, Green Garlic and Salad onions. Added Super Mini (6) and Mini (3) Artisan Boule think of them like small biscuits or rolls.

Champaign, OH: Q & A
Hello, lovely market customers…
This evening, I am chatting about some of the questions that I get asked, especially by a lot of the new customers! This market has grown so fast and furiously, that it’s time to take a breathe, and answer you…
But, first, some information from your managers. Each week we grow. And, each week we regroup, and develop new strategy for your weekly pick up.
Last week, we added freezers, and refrigeration to the cute little greenhouse.
This weekend, we have decided to add tiered shelving to make stuffing the boxes and bags, easier to find, and grab, as each customer picks up.
We are also extending the pick up time slots, plus giving you a bonus option for pick up!
Thursdays will now be split into four time slots. Pick up times will now be between 4pm-7pm. I will give you the alphabet line up, each week. AND, we are giving you a Friday morning option, between 10am-12pm, at the greenhouse!
Yes, my market loves, we have grown that big to make it necessary, to better serve you! I just need you to let me know, in the comment section, of your orders, if you will be a Thursday car line, or a Friday morning pick up! If you have already placed your order, you can shoot me an email!
Another topic…payments. Everyone is great!! But, I do need to address the non-payment issue. We totally get that life happens, things happen, you don’t feel well, or your child is sick, and you cannot get your order. BUT, if an order has been placed, you do still need to make arrangements to pick up the order, AND pay for said order. When the market closes, each week, checks are cut for each vendor, and reflect your order. If you can’t get there, and don’t give us a payment, the market is then short, because it’s not the vendor’s fault, and they do get to get paid. Let’s just remember…if you cannot be there, let’s then plan to do a prepayment, to take care of things. Also, there is a matter of storing your items if they don’t get picked up…again, it happens, but we need to be diligent in taking care of things.
And, now for the questions…
1. Yes, we are a year round farmers’ market. Every season, every week except holidays, and our market reflects the local, seasonal growing.
2. No, we are not closing down. Somehow, that little tidbit has been going around. We are strong, big, and getting bigger, each week.
3. Yes, the farm is now our permanent home.
4. Yes, your market managers are volunteering their time. And, thank you, so much, for all of your kind words and emails about how the market operates!
5. No, we are not part of any other of the Champaign County farmers’ markets. We are separate, have our own rules, our own kind of market, are very exclusive on the products that we allow in the market, and are very fierce in our local endeavors, bringing you the best of the best. We run a tight ship, and that reflects in the strength of this market.
6. When you place your order, you see a Total Due number. You also see a $0.00 account balance. That means that you have no account balance carried over from the previous week or weeks. So, the total due amount is what you will bring via check, exact cash, or prepay with a card.
7. Yes, we can store your card info. for all purchases. If you had a card on file at the YMCA, we do need you to redo your card info with us, if you have not already done so. None of the files from the YMCA transferred with us.
8. Yes…I love this market, the customers, the vendors, and the products, very, very much, and dedicate myself to you. Next month is our market anniversary, heading into year 9. I think this is such a nice, groovy dance, into the next year…
I hope this helps. The car line gets so crazy, and I know you all want to chat, and I love to chat with you, but don’t always have the time to talk as much as I would love…
See you, this Thursday, OR Friday morning!!
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Grower Notes
MORE CHANGES AHEAD
”Opening Up” – aren’t those beautiful words? It seems the whole nation is trembling with anticipation as those words are becoming more frequent.
Just as Market at Dothan had to adjust to the pandemic quarantine we’re going to have to adjust to returning to normal too, which is not that simple given that “normal” will be different. Covid will still be running around out there. Those of us who are fragile will still have to be diligent and those who are not must continue to show care and respect.
For the Market there’s no returning to the way things were. We will continue the heightened cleanliness protocols. Voluntary prepay and curbside delivery will remain available. But we will have a bit more liberty so if anyone wants to come inside that’s ok too. Hugs . . . well . . . let’s see what the governor says first!
I would like to leave you with a great video made by a friend in ministry. While this is geared toward basketball the things he talks about apply for all of us: relationships, productivity and mindset. We’ve all come to appreciate the love of our families more – relationships. We’ve made the most of a distressing situation – that’s productivity. And we’re preparing for the future – that’s a mindset. Here’s hoping all are at their peak for you going forward!
This section is a reprint from last week’s newsletter for the benefit of our new customers.
I. Order Payment:
1. Voluntarily prepay by 6 pm Thursday if possible using this PAYPAL link. This eliminates passing paper currency back and forth or handling of debit/credit cards on site. Your invoice will be marked PAID and pickup is fast and easy.
2. You may use PAYPAL curbside on Friday. Not quite as efficient as we have to verify receipt but it does work.
3. Debit/Credit – yes, we still take cards using our regular system. We just have to get within 6 feet for you to put your card in the chip reader. We do our best to avoid touching your card or you touching the equipment which means we sign an “x” for your signature.
4. Cash and Checks – please put them in a plastic baggie or bank bag. If you want to put them in your trunk/tailgate that would eliminate the need to come near the drivers window
II. Curb Service:>/b> It’s OK to pull up next to the building. In fact we recommend it as tractor trailers sometimes need to share that space. Have your trunk/ hatchback open and we’ll load you up!
GROWER NOTES
MAYIM FARM Fresh moringa is back! Use with your salads, soups or put it in your smoothie! It is one of the most nutritious plants on earth.
AVALON FARM:

First of the Kinston Sweet Onion harvest! When onion tops flop over it is an indication they are done growing. So when I saw some onions flopped earlier this week I knew I had to get them harvested before the rains on Thursday. Even though these aren’t dried down yet I’m going to start offering them to you, my favorite customers. They are so crunchy and sweet.

Also harvested a few of these purple and pink daikon radishes. These varieties are smaller and have matching color on the inside. Something fun for your plate.
HORTONS FARM: Confessions of a Mad Canner
Besides the ongoing work with our honeybees I’d love to tell you about all kinds of work getting done in the garden, but alas, that’s not the case. Until the fences are completed to keep out our four legged companions out I am on strike for any vegetable gardening.
There has been no lack of productivity here though. One of my covid projects has been to empty a freezer that needs some work. If you’ve ever emptied a freezer you know that it don’t happen overnight without losing stuff. So I started canning. A bag of Okra from 2 years ago, a little turkey and some shrimp . . Gumbo! More okra, corn niblets, onion . . Vegetable Soup!
Things were going very well till my husband decided to clean out a different freezer and started hauling out 25 lbs of stuff at the time. It really got crazy then. Italian sausage was made into Zuppa Tuscano and several versions of Tuscan Bean Soup. Rebel Canners Facebook Group provided recipes for Raw/Cold Pack Chili using ground beef he defrosted. I canned frozen Alfredo sauce using the method for canning milk. I learned to oven can pecans. Last night I processed 18 pints of dry pack carrot sticks. This morning it was a dozen half pints of hot honey salsa. If things go well I’ll do some pints of crack cole slaw this evening with 10 lb of chopped cabbage the he got somewhere.
As of this moment I’ve processed right at 160 jars. That doesn’t include the little Mason keto cheesecakes Kathy (of Kathy’s Churpers) taught me to make. Most are soups. Some are meant to eat over rice.
So that’s what’s been happening at Horton’s Farm. And the reason that if you hear Ros mumbling weird things about time/temperature/weight/wet/dry/waterbath or pc . . . it’s just internal calculating how something can be stored in a jar forever.

Champaign, OH: Saturday Strings, Coffee, and Musings
Muddy river runs muddy ‘n’ wild…
(Fare Thee Well-Marcus Mumford, Oscar Isaac)
So…for all of you new to us, the market family, you know that I am your market manager, well one of your market managers. Your other manager has become manager status after years and years of insisting that he was a market assistant.
But, I am who you get, here, in this market weblog, and who you know as the local bread baker, owner of Cosmic Charlie Baking and Bread. I am also the Hippie part of, Hippie and the Farmer, and you have known me around different towns, Urbana, Springfield, Yellow Springs, not just for my breads, but also for my little clothing pop ups, featuring my vibrant taste in all things eclectic, hippie, vintage, mod…I’ve had shop fronts, and I’ve had spaces at farmers’ markets, I’ve been featured in area bistros and cafes and coffeehouses with my breads, and you used to know me by my beloved yellow VW bug, Sugaree, and now my red Audi, Begonia…and, you also can tell by my car names, and my bread business name that I am an old school Dead head, Grateful Dead, and I name all of my bread customers, Bread Heads.
I’ve been baking for 10 years, it started as a hobby, my business started as a fluke, and it took off to wild craziness, and I was on the road, constantly, packing up my faithful little bug, with colorful crates, and loaves of breads, with colorful tapestries, and Grateful Dead music, and traveled, most every day or evening, to farmers’ markets.
I was the manager of the Mechanicsburg market for years, and have been your market manager, here, for almost as long as it’s been in existence.
My breads are vegan, unless you get one of my rustic gourmet varieties that will offer cheeses, and such, but my doughs, well they rise, in vegan goodness.
I have a love of music, my heart melts at string bands, and I have lived a very fun and colorful life. One that has taken me from the West End of my growing up, off to college in the south, and then I lived coast to coast as a flight attendant of the 80s.
I’m happiest in all things of nonconformity, and my business models are simply what I feel in my heart, and what I feel to be right.
I’ve been helped, my whole life, by some very lovely people…and, I’m not going to lie, I do get by with a little help from my friends. In business, I jump in, think later, and it’s always served me well.
This market is a labor of love that has grown, grown, grown, and it makes me so excited to watch it’s growth of late, to have been lucky enough to have our local paper write stories of us, to be noticed by the news station, and last year, to have been the subject of a two part NPR interview via WYSO.
So, another introduction of one of your vendors, your manager…and her quirky ways, and always sparkling spirit.
The song, today? It’s a beautiful string set that is perfect with my morning coffee (another fact about me…I run on coffee, wine and water) and if you pull this song up, turn it up, you will also be carried away by it’s beauty. Much like I am carried away by the beauty of all of you…
It’s Saturday, the market is open, and I see the love pouring in…
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
