Market News

With so many delicious vegetables available on the market, we want to share some of our favorite recipes as inspiration for how to enjoy them. This week, enjoy a refreshing Grilled Vegetable Salad. While the recipe below is vegetarian, it would be simple to grill a chicken breast or a filet of fish to serve with the salad. If you have favorite recipes you would like to share that include ingredients found on our market, please email them to [email protected], and we’ll include them in future emails!
Please remember as you order that per the POA’s instructions, we cannot leave your food unattended. If you need us to deliver to your neighbor or slip your order inside your house, please be sure to tell us in the comments so we can make sure your order gets to you safely!
If you have other suggestion about how we can continue to make deliveries without being able to leave products unattended, we’d love to hear them. We’re still developing the best ways to get your orders to you, and we welcome any of your ideas.
As always, if you enjoy being a member of Big Canoe Harvest, tell your friends! The more the market grows, the more additional vendors and products we’ll be able to include. As always, your feedback help shapes the market. Let us know what you think about the Big Canoe Harvest products.
Have a wonderful week, and we’ll see you Saturday!

Recipes

Grilled Vegetable Salad
Serves 2 as a main course, 4 as a side salad

Pair this salad with a light, bone-dry French rose – we suggest a bottle of Juliette Provence Rose (on sale this week at IGA for less than $10, an incredible deal!)

Salad
½ Pound of Bush Beans
1 bunch Scallions
½ pound of meaty Mushrooms
4-6 ounces of Sweet Peppers
1 head Radicchio
1 tbsp Olive Oil
1 handful of toasted sliced almonds
Small handful of an Herb of your choice, chopped – parsley, basil, or dill are all good options

Dressing
1 tbsp acid of choice – lemon juice, cider vinegar, or wine vinegar, etc
1 tbsp Dijon Mustard
3 tbsp Olive Oil
Salt
Pepper

1. Preheat grill for 10 minutes on high with cover down.
2. Prepare your vegetables: Trim the bush beans. Cut roots off scallions. Remove tough ends of mushrooms. Thinly slice peppers. Chiffonade radicchio.
3. In a large bowl, whisk together acid and Dijon mustard, and then slowly drizzle in 3 tbsp of olive oil while continuing to whisk. Add salt and to taste. Add peppers and pepper radicchio to dressing and toss to combine.
4. Toss beans, scallions, and mushrooms in 1 tbsp olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.
5. Grill vegetables over direct heat for 3-5 minutes. Turn occasionally – you want a good crispy, tender texture. If you don’t want to use a grill, vegetables can be cooked under a broiler. Set the top rack as closed to the broiler as possible and arrange vegetables on a cookie sheet. Broil for 2-5 minutes, or until lightly charred.
6. Cut grilled scallions into bite sized pieces. Add grilled vegetables, almonds, and chopped herbs to bowl with dressing and toss to combine. Taste and season with salt and pepper.

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Growing Together :  Growing Together Veggies for July 13th!

Hello!
We hope you are all getting to enjoy these beautiful, long summer days! Although the heat is now kicking in, it has actually been one of the cooler Junes, and has been great growing weather!
The summer produce is looking great, and we are pleased to offer you a wonderful selection this week. The farmers have plenty of summer stand-bys, like tomatoes and cucumbers, but also some fun new things you may want to try, like roselle leaves and long beans! Roselle leaves have a lemony tang, and can be added to a salad or used as a substitute for sorrel leaves.
We are also offering colorful flower bouquets this week, which are available for pre-order to pick up on Saturday.

Check out all of this and more at our online market (link below).

We are so grateful for your support! As always, please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about any of the produce.

Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of July 12 2020

Hello folks. We are in full swing season as mid July approaches. Lots of kale, early summer cabbage perfect for your first batch of sauerkraut. Green onions, collard greens and much more. Lots of our ever popular pasture raised beef, chicken and pork available and plenty of eggs.
Also available this week:
- Currants u-pick now open. Black currants, the kind used to make the ribena cordial drinks. Pre picked also available.
- Raspberries u-pick now open.
- Mulberries are a deliciously sweet fruit, very tender, that we have never offered for u-pick. The crop is bountiful this year so I thought we’d offer it. Mulberries grow on trees so most fruit needs a ladder (at your own risk!) We provide you the ladder. Same price at currants, Cami and I picked 5L in an hour last week.

Order deadline is 5 PM Wednesday.
Pickup times are Thursday and Friday 3 PM to 6 PM.

We look forward to seeing you all again this week. Have a great week!

Be well, eat well,

Nick & Angela
