Foothills Market:  The Market is Open!

Foothills Market is open for another week of shopping!

Tomato season is in full swing, and we hope you are taking advantage of the variety of tasty homegrown tomatoes our growers offer. Do you ever wish you could keep that fresh summer flavor throughout the year? Maybe you think it’s too much work and takes too much equipment to “put up” tomatoes for the winter. But freezing tomatoes is an easy way to save that fresh flavor. Peel the tomatoes and cut them into quarters. Cook in a saucepan with a small amount of water until the tomatoes are soft and have a good amount of juice. If you want to have crushed tomatoes, you can use the tomatoes at that stage; if you want juice, press the tomatoes through a sieve. Allow the tomatoes/juice to cool to room temperature, then place in freezer bags or boxes and place flat in the freezer.

Browse the market between now and Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Be sure to click the “Place your order” button, and we’ll have your items ready for pick-up Thursday between 4:30-5:30 p.m.

A heads-up for next week – Foothills Market will be taking a hiatus the week of July 26-August 1. We will not have the market open for shopping, so stock up this week if needed!

Eat something fresh this week!

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  Weblog Entry

Dear CSA-ers,

This week’s Preassembled Bag will contain Malabar Spinach, Muir Head Lettuce, Carrots, Garlic, Eggplant, Hot Peppers, parsley and chives. Orders may now be placed on the online market at: https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

Life on the farm progresses as we harvest Spring crops and plant the Autumn ones. In such intimate contact with the land, the cosmic cycles that have driven our world for millennia become observable. At this time of year, we begin to notice that the sunlight hours recede each day. The sun rises just a tiny bit later and sets just a tiny bit earlier. The change in day length is not a set amount through the year. Towards Summer and Winter Solstice, day-length changes just seconds each day, but as the farm moves towards the Autumn Equinox (September 22) this change accelerates to nearly 3 minutes a day. All things, in agriculture, and perhaps life, are cyclical.

The cosmic cycle of seasons is important to us because it affects what is in season and what grows well. At one point in human history, this would have been second nature to everyone, but this seasonality has been blurred by our modern era of refrigerated storage warehouses, 24 hour groceries, and international shipping. It is our hope that participating in CSA helps to reconnect to the Earth and its bounty through seasonal eating. It is not a stretch to believe that our bodies perform best when they eat what the Earth is providing in its proper time.

On the topic of seasonality, our heirloom hard-neck garlic have completed their curing time and are now ready for consumption. Curing is the process by which the garlic dries enough to be stored at room temperature. This year, the garlic is admittedly small, but we invite you compare flavor clove to clove, to what you get from the store, and there is no contest. We are still working to perfect garlic growing in this climate. While it was too late to implement much of what we learned at the OAK conference this Spring, we are excited to try some of the techniques from world-class organic farmers, Jean-Paul & Crystal Stewart-Courtens when we plant again this Fall. Regardless of size, heirloom garlic is a culinary luxury. We believe all the garlic lovers in our CSA will find that their spicy, savory flavor heightens every recipe that begs their inclusion.

As always, we want to thank you for your interest, support, and participation in our farm. Whether you are a market loyal, CSA regular, both, or simply curious about organic agriculture in Western Kentucky- we are glad to have you as a part of our community. We wish you and those you hold dear the best in your week to come!

Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

Berea Gardens:  Market open

Please read! I am sending this out a little early today because I need to get to the field to catch up with some activities. Our schedule this week was disrupted with the birth of our 12th grandchild! Jordyn gave birth on Friday to the newest member of the clan. You can check her Facebook page for details, but we are happy that she is beautiful, healthy and 100% organic!

Now, for what else you need to know. We have a new crop of beets with tops this week that are gorgeous. You beet green lovers will treasure these.

I am heading out to the field now to dig some potatoes. They are not listed for pre-order because I don’t know how I will hold up in this heat, so I don’t have an exact quantity to list. I expect to have 50 to 100 lbs. on the table for add-on if you want some Wednesday. These will be our favorite Red LaSoda variety, and don’t worry, if we can’t supply your need this week we have about 2,000 lbs. to offer over the next few weeks.

Tomatoes are starting to ripen also, and both Tom and I will have these on our tables Wednesday too.

Hope to see you!
Bob and Lynnita

Champaign, OH:  Sunday Morning Vibes

I want to thank you for giving me the best day of my life…
Oh just to be with you is having the best day of my life…
(Thank You-Dido)
Song Implant/Memory-Customer Bev Titus

This song stands alone, in it’s beauty. I remember it’s release, and I remember listening to it, many times, taking my daughter to her early years of school, in our first years after moving to the Urbana area. It was a hard move for her, as we moved from our little beach town in Florida. Her little school was right off the beach, in a very free flowing, barefoot learning experience. The move, the new school, the new climate, leaving her little friends, the only house she knew, the playgrounds, beaches…it was all just so hard. This song used to calm us, both, as we listened to this driving to school drop off.

On Friday, at market pick up, Bev gave me a handwritten memory of this song, what it meant to her, and the bittersweet memories it holds of her very brave, very beautiful, very young daughter to have been lost in the very ugliness of the 9/11 tragedies, Alicia Titus.

Bev’s memory and this song are of one of the last fun filled evenings that she had spent with Alicia and their other daughter, as Alicia colored their other daughter’s hair, had music on, and they were singing, dancing, and making what would be one of their last memories, together, with Alicia.
To Bev, this song represented an insight into Alicia, a wish that they had both conveyed to each other, and it has become her heartwarming/bittersweet memory of those last sweet times.

The reason that I began with the story of my young daughter, and this song, is to share my never ending parallels with Bev.

Bev and I first got to know each other through my Cosmic Charlie business. My messages of peace, hope, love, intrigued her to reach out to me, as this was the message that she and her husband had set forth in Alicia’s memory. We began to bond, over the years, and with each time, one more layer of our crossing paths would be unveiled.

Alicia, though much younger than me, was also an American Airlines flight attendant. While I had left that career a few years, earlier, before the 9/11 events, I remember watching the horrific news feeds, and knowing what those flight attendants were going through in those last moments. I trained for those moments. You needed to be a selfless, compassionate, and giving person to be a flight attendant in those type of moments. We trained to put ourselves, last, and the passengers first. I wanted Bev to know that her daughter was an angel, in those moments, to so many strangers. Bev already knew that about her daughter, but I just needed to let her know, of our bond.

The next parallel that Bev unveiled was that Alicia and I were sisters of the same sorority. A sorority that emphasized being the light, giving graciously to others…of that, her daughter did.

Bev and I have bonded over being mothers with daughters, and she never forgets to ask about my own daughter, and her life, and her hopes and dreams.

I spoke, two years ago, at Bev’s request, at a peace movement. The speech I had planned, got crumbled up, as I decided to speak from my heart about the peaceful soul her daughter had to have possessed, the peacefulness that I had to fight for, for my own daughter, when intervention was needed in a school situation, and how love and peace will always prevail either in memory, or/also in those of us, left, to continue the fight for everyone to feel peace, comfort, and compassion…

And, so, to begin with my own memory of our move to Urbana, this song, and driving to those early days of school drop offs was another parallel, mother to mother, taking comfort…

This has been a very long, very heavy Sunday weblog but I mean to just show you that we all find healing, and peace, and my hopes is that this market, and myself, give you just that.

I have had so many market customers become so close, and dear to me, over the years, and I hold each of you in my heart…

Go forward with peace, love, and understanding, and in these times we are in, try to sprinkle it, wherever you go…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
