Market News
This week we finally see some of the first summer berries listed. Blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries are all starting to ripen, and in the coming weeks we should start seeing a flood of all of them. Despite the late start, it ought to be a good year for berries, since we didn’t get any late freezes, the spring was relatively long and cool, and we’ve had plenty of rain. It might be a great season to stock up on blueberries when they’re in their peak and freeze them for later. In the fall, when the cranberries from up north arrive, just mix equal parts of those and frozen blueberries right in a dish and cover with a streusel topping (even a box “apple crisp” topping mix is fine) and throw that in the oven. So easy, and the mix of sweet blueberries and tart cranberries is perfect. Can’t wait! Oh — I just remembered I put some bags of cranberries in the freezer last fall, so I guess I don’t have to wait after all. Hooray!
It’s hard to believe that this week marks one year exactly of having our Thursday pickups at our Tallassee Road location. I know so many of you relied on our market to get you through the first couple months of the pandemic, and I can’t overstate how hard it was to keep things going, first at Ben’s Bikes and then at the YMCA. It seemed like every week brought new challenges, and then when the governor suddenly re-opened the gyms in May, it really seemed like we’d hit the end of the road. I’m so grateful for ALG customers reaching out about the place on Tallassee, where the Double Helix School was moving out to their new home on Prince. It had everything we needed to keep going, and now that things are starting to feel like their really getting back to normal, it’s nice to still have a place where we can keep up the best of everything we’ve learned over the years. I still don’t know how long we’ll be there (we’re technically leasing out some of the space month-to-month) but it’s been such a blessing for us this past year.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you at our market’s home on Tallassee Road!
We are still getting new customers every week (and we love seeing new masked faces!) so for all of you you can find a detailed run-down of how Thursdays go on our website here: https://athens.locallygrown.net/faq#7
Other Area Farmers Markets
If ALG doesn’t have everything you need, please support our growers at the other markets that are now back up and running, or at their own locations. The Comerian takes online orders for Saturday pickup at the bakery here: https://www.thecomerian.com/online-ordering. The Athens Farmers Market is holding their Saturday market once again in Bishop Park. They’re still operating under pandemic rules, so you’ll want to read up on all the changes on their website, http://athensfarmersmarket.net. The West Broad Farmers Market is back, holding a drive through market just like us (and using my software too, so it’ll be nice and familiar). You can join them at https://wbfm.locallygrown.net. The Saturday market in Comer has also returned. They’re small, but sometimes an early Saturday drive to Comer is just what the soul needs. And of course Collective Harvest is going strong over at https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Martin's Farmstand: This is the peak of strawberry season
The next pickings are Monday June 14 starting at 7 AM and Wednesday starting 2 PM I just came in from scouting the fields and there are lots of ripe berries. Picking conditions will be very good. There are so many ripe berries to pick that I do not foresee that they will be all picked till later in the day (but one never knows). We are open rain or shine. ( We do need the rain very much)
The strawberries are ripening in a much more concentrated pattern then is common with a large portion of the berries looking like they will be ripe in the next week. The season of course will continue after that (there are still green berries) but this is not a year to procrastinate. Size and quantity will drop off quickly this year. It looks to me like we are in for an extremely intense and short season. Get your berries sooner rather than later.
Hours for u-pick are Monday starting
at 7 AM; Wednesday, start 2 PM (no morning picking on Wednesdays); Saturday, start 7 AM. This repeats through out the whole season. The patch closes when the berries are all picked or at 6 PM.
When you arrive you do not need to stop at the stand to weigh your containers if you know the empty weight already. Also you do not need to stop if you are picking into standard Quart or gallon containers.
You have the option of bringing your own containers or buy empties from us.(Quart boxes 25 cents each or $20 per hundred. Gallon buckets $3 each.)
We will be using the same random picking pattern that we did last year. This means that you may start anyplace you wish in the patches that are open as long as you are not cutting in front of someone. It is mandatory that when you are picking that all the ripe berries are picked as you move ( No roaming or grazing type picking. A section of row must either be picked or not picked when you leave. We keep scouting the patch and suggesting where you will find good picking. Daniel

Summer is my favorite season and is full of delights: butterflies, bumble bees, day lilies, hydrangeas, peaches, and tomatoes, to name a few! I like sunshine, puffy white clouds, and blue skies. When it’s just too hot, I welcome the cooling relief of a summer thunderstorm. And, I like front porches.
Friends, I am finally getting the front porch for which I’ve been pining for 23 years. Since the bitter cold days of February and constant rains of March and April, the project has progressed at a snail’s pace. May blessed us with much drier weather, and now, the porch has taken shape. The metal roof was put on last week, and the electrician ran the lines that will power three ceiling fans soon. Much work remains: a finished porch ceiling, lights, a swing, posts, balustrade, and steps, not to mention new landscaping. We are so excited that the project is coming along so quickly now. The new porch will enhance our lifestyle by providing sheltered outdoor space for relaxing, entertaining, and waving at our neighbors. We can’t wait!!!
May you all find pleasure and happiness this Summer. We thank you for supporting locally grown agriculture, and we look forward to seeing you this week at the Market.
Thanks,
Beverly
