Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, Week of Aug 22 2021

Summer’s End Equinox Celebration and Climate Mobilization

You can’t have missed the news headlines about the UN’s IPCC Climate Science report last week. How will we know that real action is happening to reduce the worst of climate disruptions? When we see friends, neighbours and relations living their lives differently. How will they know? when they see us living our lives differently. So our intent is to host a celebration of summer’s end, a bountiful harvest, and local climate initiatives we can all do. Family friendly of course.
The Menu: Saturday Sept 18
2pm to 4pm: arrival for welcome and sharing a marketplace of ideas (see below)
4 to 6: assembly of citizens:  to hear the science and grieve the consequences
6pm to 7:30 dinner(bring your own utensils), and drumming
7:30 Music by The Rewynds, a pop rock group with climate connections        Dancing and Open Mic
Closing when last dancers leave.

Climate Mobilization Marketplace

Groups and individuals will offer tabledisplays about their ideas for local climate mobilization. Activities could include food harvesting and preserving, seed saving, treeplanting, downsizing and rightsizing, tiny houses, nature walks, deep renovation of homes, repurposing yards, neighbourhood resilience clubs and block captains, energy/carbon footprint checkups, suburban retrofitting, and etc.
This event will be rain or shine, renting a bigtop tent. We will use eventbrite to keep track of numbers so we don’t go over the covid outdoor gathering limit.

Old 99 Harvest this week

Time to order your freezer chickens, we can specify halves, whole or parts, as in drumsticks, thighs, boneless breast, etc. Order ahead, we’ll keep them frozen for you, and give 10% discount to boot, if over $150.

Veggies available this week include turnip greens, purple top white turnips, rainbow swiss chard, collard greens, green cabbage, scallions (Bunching onions), Leeks, fuku Komachi turnips, carrots, tropeana onions just to name a few.
We have fresh picked peaches! Tree ripened and of course organic. Fancy grade blemish free for eating out of the hand and bulk for canning. Watermelons, musk melons (cantaloupe) and many varieties of tomatoes can be ordered online. The new garlic crop is in. Apples and pears not yet tree-ripened for harvest.

We have prepared Black currant juice (pressure canned) and basil pesto (frozen) and will make on request, sauerkraut.

Don’t forget about our amazing pastured beef and pork as well as our very popular pastured eggs.

Winter CSA, Community Shared Agriculture box plans for 2021/22

This summer we started a ‘CSA’ box of veggies every week for 24 weeks in three sizes. We will be doing the same for the winter season starting Oct 1st to Apr 30, with stored root vegetables, fresh greens and eggs every week for you. This is a practical way to keep getting nutrient-dense tasty food from this local farm every week. And it helps us know how much to grow! Small size is selection of fresh vegetables each week, plus one dozen eggs, 6 items per week for 24 weeks. $600 paid in advance. Medium is 9 items, suitable for 2-3 people. Payment of $850 is 50% due on signup, balance at week 12. Large size selection of fresh vegetables, 15 items, and one dozen eggs each week for 24 weeks. Large is suitable for 4+ people. Payment of $1250 is 50% due on sign-up balance at week 12.

Please remember to place your order before 7am Thursday so we can pick and chill the produce at it’s freshest. Market pickup times are 4pm to 6pm Thursday and Friday. Alternative arrangements by request.

Be well,
Nick & Angela

Champaign, OH:  I'll Stop The World

Dream of better lives the kind which never hate…

Dropped in the state of imaginary grace
(You should know better) I made a pilgrimage to save this human race…
(I Melt With You…Modern English)

Happy Monday, lovely market customers!!

Your market manager is just coming off of another catering weekend, and back to getting her groove on.

This song has been in my brain for a few days. One reason is that it popped on my playlist, and I immediately was transported back to the 80s, clubs, friends, boyfriends, fun, and carefree lives. The second reason is that one of my pals just started a group, on Facebook, for the girls from our high school. Not a graduation year only, or a best friend, only, but it’s an all inclusive girl group, from all years, of our high school.

A group of just positive vibes, good thoughts, and a bit of escape from the daily norm of negativity.

I love it, because even if we all did have our own little groups in high school, we are now a group of one. Adult women, living very different lives, but celebrating each other.

Again…all the late 70s/early 80s vibes.

And…my recent dealings and feelings out there, in the general public, needs all of the positivity, some days. Recently, the rage is real, out there…I run into while driving, while shopping, in walking past people. I get it…it’s crazy times, and everyone is feeling it in different ways.

But…my hope, is that when you are a part of this weekly little market of love, that you actually do feel the love. The all inclusive positivity. The happy. The fun. Not always perfect, but always with the best of heart and intentions.

I hope that both customers, and vendors feel the love. Because I like to think that we try to make that difference. Trying to make your own lives better, happier, healthier…

Because you know…I’ll Melt With You (and, for you)

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Athens Locally Grown:  ALG Market Open for August 26

Athens Locally Grown

How to contact us:
Our Website: athens.locallygrown.net
On Twitter: @athlocallygrown
On Facebook: www.facebook.com/athenslocallygrown
On Thursdays: Here’s a map.

Market News

The end of August is one of the toughest times to be a grower here. The heat and humidity is at its peak and it’s the perfect weather for pests and diseases. It’s draining just being outside for an hour, much less the whole day, but there’s just so much to do. And on top of tending to the summer crops, now is the time to start planting for the fall. It’s hard to remember, when it’s so hot and muggy that it’s still 80 degrees at four in the morning, that our average first frost is only six or seven weeks away! But it’ll be here before you know it, and when it is and you’re eating your crisp lettuces and gorgeous broccoli remember that your growers were out in the heat at the end of August getting those plants started for us.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you at our market’s home on Tallassee Road!

We are still getting new customers every week (and we love seeing new faces!) so for all of you you can find a detailed run-down of how Thursdays go on our website here: https://athens.locallygrown.net/faq#7

Other Area Farmers Markets

If ALG doesn’t have everything you need, please support our growers at the other markets that are now back up and running, or at their own locations. The Comerian takes online orders for Saturday pickup at the bakery here: https://www.thecomerian.com/online-ordering. The Athens Farmers Market is holding their Saturday market once again in Bishop Park and Wednesdays at Creature Comforts. They’re still operating under pandemic rules, so you’ll want to read up on all the changes on their website, http://athensfarmersmarket.net. The West Broad Farmers Market is back, holding a drive through market just like us (and using my software too, so it’ll be nice and familiar). You can join them at https://wbfm.locallygrown.net. The Saturday market in Comer has also returned. They’re small, but sometimes an early Saturday drive to Comer is just what the soul needs. And of course Collective Harvest is going strong over at https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Berea Gardens:  Good Morning

Hi Friends,

I am getting out a little early this morning to begin transplanting some of our fall fare for you: Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts and Kale. Fall lettuce is also germinating and we have a lot of work ahead of us harvesting off the summer crops and preparing for the season ahead. Next week we will have a large amount of sweet corn for you.

In addition to what is listed today, we will have a nice assortment of heirloom tomatoes; Yellow Jubilee, Brandywine, Cherokee Purple and Rutgers on the table this week. We also have a few bushels of Roma Canning tomatoes at $40 a bushel, so if you are fortunate enough to have canning lids, this is the time to get some. Leave a message in the “Notes” section of your order if you want me to hold some for you.

Have a Blessed Week,
Bob & Lynnita
