Lathemtown Farm Fresh Market:  This Week at the Market

It is feeling like winter is on the horizon as we have had out first hard freeze. The green beans won’t make it, but the peas are still growing well. Lots of greens coming in, and the broccoli is starting to flower! We won’t have a ton of veggies through the winter, but should have enough greens to keep up. We have increased the protein level in the chicken feed so they have been laying a little better this past week.
We have some herbal loose leaf teas available now in the stand. They are so flavorful and perfect with Christine’s honey!
this week’s market is a regular market cycle and the “Holiday” items are still for preview only. After the market closes on Wednesday, I will reopen Thursday morning (11/18) for Thanksgiving preorders and pick up will be next Wednesday (11/24) after 10am. Another email will be sent out like this to remind you the holiday market is open.

Have a great week!

Ordering window is Monday Afternoon through Thursday Morning and pick up will be Friday-Sunday by appointment until we expand more, Please indicate when you would like to pick up when you place your order.

Remember to tell me when you want to pick up! (and if I don’t reply to confirm within a day, bump my e-mail or text me 407-342-8515. Though I have cleaned up my e-mail so hopefully I won’t Miss Anyone.)

Sign in to order. https://yalaha.locallygrown.net/market

You have to sign in to see the add to cart button. Then set the number and click the add to cart button on the items you want to buy (it is the little picture right next to the quantity box.) Remember you need to check out before your order will be placed.
Remember to let me know when you want to pick up on Sat or maybe even Friday late afternoon or on Sunday. (If I don’t send you an e-mail confirmation of your order and pick up time, please make sure you checked out and completed your order.)

Champaign, OH:  Monday Morning

Monday morning, you sure look fine…
(Fleetwood Mac)

Good morning…what a beautiful, yet very cold, start to the week…

This is your Monday reminder that your weekly orders are due before 8am, tomorrow morning. And, also reminding you that the market will be on break, next week, with the Thanksgiving holiday.

Think about all that you need, and also think about some of your baked goods that you are ordering, and if you would rather do a special pick up, at the shop, next Tuesday or Wednesday, to ensure total freshness for your special holiday plans.

These weeks get busy, so don’t forget to take a bit of time out of your day to make life a bit easier with ordering from the market…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

PS…if you ordered from me, this week, and you can wait to do a Tuesday or Wednesday pick up, that would be great. If not, I will have your order ready at market pick up, Thursday.

I had another death if my family, and am unsure, at this time, when the arrangements will be…so, I am just trying to be proactive in my baking, while not making it a hardship on any of you lovely customers…

Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of Nov 14

This is Ian writing this weeks blog.
On Thursday last week I was away visiting my mother and upon my return I found a note from Nick saying he had packed up and left, that Angela had closed her practice and they left the area. Not to try to contact him. He would have needed a truck and helpers to get it done by 4pm when the market opened. I had told him the day before I was going to be away all day Thursday.

Of course this was a shock. I did write to his email address that I am saddened by his departure and the manner in which he did it. Since then trying to piece this together, it is clear that he was planning to leave for some time; the greenhouse has not been weeded for months, outdoor beds are overgrown, no new crops are started for the winter season. During our biweekly check-in on Tuesday, he made no mention of unhappiness, and we discussed his revenue target for the next season. In fact relations have good enough that I have been quite comfortable leaving the farm in his hands. Now I have to conclude that I have been deceived.

I am putting the word out for candidates who would like to participate in the operation of Old 99 Farm, and/or live in the two bedroom loft apartment.

The silver lining may be that this pushes me towards changing the purpose and direction of the farm. There are many people who want to learn permaculture ways, to grow some of their food, and to build a community of interest in resilient lifestyles. Those of you who attended the Equinox event will remember my comments in this regard. If you are intrigued, pls contact me.

This week’s produce

We have celery, spinach, chard (perpetual green, rainbow), purple top white turnips, Detroit beets, collard greens, baby fennel bulbs, baby leeks, potatoes, carrots, rutabaga and golden turnips, new crop baby carrots, kale, and mixed greens. We have home processed pork lard and beef broth. The NY striploin steaks in the freezer are truly outstanding, even if I’m the one saying it! (We had family over for dinner on saturday and the steaks were a hit.) We have made 40 bottles of hard cider that you might like. Maybe I’ll slip one in the Winter CSA baskets soon.

I don’t think you will notice any difference in our offerings in the near term, but I do have to get that greenhouse planted for the spring season starting May 1st.

The first of segments of my talk from the Equinox Celebration is now ready for viewing at this LINK. The theme was My Journey So Far In The Climate Crisis. Part 1 is “I Feel A Call to Action”

Please surf over to www.old99farm.locallygrown.net to place your orders for meats, eggs, vegetables and prepared products. I did not attach the whole product listing this week.
Healthy eating,
Ian and Cami

Market News

Here’s a reminder that we’ll be taking next week, the week of Thanksgiving off, as we do every year. We will be open as usual this week, so if there are things you’d like for your Thanksgiving meals, you’ll need to plan ahead and order them early. If you need local produce next week, Collective Harvest CSA is doing a special pre-order market (much like ALG) with pickups at their Baxter Street office. You can find info here: https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com/thanksgivingmarket. I think Heirloom Cafe is also holding their traditional mini farmers market in their parking lot on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, from 11am until 2pm. I’ve not seen any confirmation of that as I type this, but I can’t imagine they’ll skip it this year. Meanwhile, stock up from us this week!

And now, some bittersweet news…

When we started Athens Locally Grown twenty years ago, local food availability was very different than it is today. Besides a small Saturday market on the patio of Big City Bread and stalls around city hall Saturday morning, both only open about half the year, there was no where else for farmers to directly sell their products and no where else you could go to find their fresh, clean food. (Ok, Daily Grocery, sometimes.) We accidentally invented the world’s first online farmers market in the spring of 2002 to give people a mid-week option for local food.

And when both of those Saturday markets closed down, we were the only place in town. For a while, we had customers drive to Athens from Atlanta and other far-off places every Thursday and we briefly became, amazingly, the largest farmers market in the southeast United States!

Now, thanks to the hard work of so many people, there are many markets and many places to buy your awesome food. I know of at least six weekly markets in Clarke County alone besides ALG, and there are thriving markets in most every county surrounding us. I’ve never seen those as competition — ALG isn’t a business for me, and I’ve never made any money from it. I’ve always seen my work here as a public service, something I was happy to put my time and money into because access to the kind of food at our market is something I strongly believe in.

I feel like I (and all of us together) have achieved my goals, and ALG is simply no longer a sustainable way to use my resources. I was contemplating this at the beginning of 2020, but then the pandemic showed that there was still more work to do, and I was glad we were still here to bear the load for the community while those other markets scrambled to adapt. I can’t even begin to describe how stressful and exhausting it was to keep ALG going these last two years. All of our market volunteers worked long and hard, and we made it through.

But now it’s time to wind down for good. Our last market will be December 23. I quietly stopped charging memberships a few months ago, so no one has recently paid the yearly fee. If you paid before I stopped charging and think it isn’t fair, email me and we’ll work it out. I don’t think there are any outstanding gift certificates out there, but if you have one you haven’t redeemed, please do so.

I know many of you already shop at multiple markets, but if you’re looking for a new market to call home, may I suggest the West Broad Farmers Market? They host a weekly drive-through market powered by the same software we use here, so it’ll be nice and easy for you to transition over. Sadly, they just held their last pre-order market until after the holidays, but you can still go to their website and set up an account so you’re ready when they return. And in the meantime they’re still hosting their Saturday in-person farmers market. Here’s their website: https://wbfm.locallygrown.net.

It’s possible ALG will re-appear in some form in the future. A special event pop-up market, maybe? I’ll be keeping the website around, even if it’s dormant, so if we return you’ll be the first to know. Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown these last twenty years (some of you have been with us this whole time!), all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you at our market’s home on Tallassee Road for five more markets!

We are still getting new customers every week (and we love seeing new faces!) so for all of you you can find a detailed run-down of how Thursdays go on our website here: https://athens.locallygrown.net/faq#7

Other Area Farmers Markets

If ALG doesn’t have everything you need, please support our growers at the other markets that are now back up and running, or at their own locations. The Comerian takes online orders for Saturday pickup at the bakery here: https://www.thecomerian.com/online-ordering. The Athens Farmers Market is holding their Saturday market once again in Bishop Park and Wednesdays at Creature Comforts. They’re still operating under pandemic rules, so you’ll want to read up on all the changes on their website, http://athensfarmersmarket.net. The West Broad Farmers Market is back, holding a drive through market just like us (and using my software too, so it’ll be nice and familiar). You can join them at https://wbfm.locallygrown.net. The Saturday market in Comer has also returned. They’re small, but sometimes an early Saturday drive to Comer is just what the soul needs. And of course Collective Harvest is going strong over at https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
