Weblog from some of our Grower’s:
Sow’s Ear Piggery:
We have added new pork cuts this week: Top Round and Bottom Round Roasts make the perfect meal for cold weather. Pork tenderloins have also been added. Pork stew meat, chops, ribs, pork sausage, and ground pork are always in stock, too. As always, this pork is from free-range. outdoor pigs fed non-GMO, non-corn, and non-soy diets. No antibiotics ever.
Oakview Farm:
We are so excited to have warm weather this week, but when it got cold again, we decided to do more baking! We have our fresh sourdough Focaccia bread available again!! We use our own rosemary and an old-world starter, along with fresh garlic, coarse salt and olive oil to make this delicious bread. And new this week is our Sourdough Pretzel! It’s soft and chewy with a sourdough flavor that will leave you wanting more. It’s amazing with beer cheese dip or stone-ground mustard. You can also check out our baby white turnips, radishes, and salad mix (with kale, lettuce, and young mustard greens) for a healthy addition to your table. And don’t forget that we have a variety of jams available: apple butter, rum raisin apple preserves, green tomato marmalade and more!
Periwinkle and Pine Co
This week, I’m featuring the Valentine’s Day heart wreaths, as well as two very special wreaths:
Periwinkle and Rose
Pink Flower and Berry
Each of these pretty artificial lamb’s ear wreaths take me 2 hours to make. They are handmade with love and care, and I promise you they are stunning and made to last.
Have a wonderful week!
A&J Naturale:
We have luxurious, whipped, Unscented moisturizer and also Lavender, these are hand crafted with locally sourced tallow. Tallow closely resembles the skin’s natural sebum so it can aid in the sealing in of moisture. Will replenish extremely dry, cracked skin. Can oil cleanse with it as face wash and remove make up safely and toxin free. I began making this product because my son had terrible diaper rashes and no prescribed or over the counter product seemed to be healing it or easing the pain caused by it. I began researching techniques of our ancestors.
Tallow has been used for centuries and with the exploding cosmetic industry it was quickly forgotten and traded for synthetic ingredients which saved money but ended up lacking all the healing properties you can only obtain from natural, toxin-free products. Ingredient list: 100% grass fed & finished tallow, organic coconut oil. Product is incredibly stable and does not need to be refrigerated Traditionally used to treat skin ailments – dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, rashes, warts, toe/foot fungi, etc.
Bean Man:
We trust everyone is doing well through the drops in temperature this week and looking forward to the warmer (somewhat) temperatures in the coming week. During the weekend markets, our best sellers have been our Chili Mix, Buttermilk Pancake Mix, Black Bean Dip Mix and, believe it or not, our Scottish Oatmeals.
We know lots of folks are anxiously awaiting our Gluten Free, Vegan Sourdough Bread Mixes (yes, there are two) but we are still not satisfied. We are close but in order for us to make sure you are satisfied, we are running some additional batches so that means we are getting to eat a lot of sourdough which is not necessarily a bad thing. Not to worry, they will be available soon.
Please see our full selection at the market this week including Fresh Dry Beans, Bean Mixes, Pizza Crust Mixes, Gluten Free Flours and Mixes as well as our Scottish Oatmeals. If you follow us on social media (tnbeanman on Instagram and Facebook), we continue to post pictures of our products for ideas on how to use them. Always take advantage of the information on our website if you have questions or reach out via email.

Terry’s Treasures:

Succulent and cactus gardens make great gifts for so many occasions. Birthdays, anniversary, office coworker, or just because. I have many different sizes and plants. So easy to take care of. Prices vary from $12 and up. Thank you for your support. It is well appreciated.
Barefoot Acres Herbs: We are keeping busy, even in the winter. That’s the beauty of storing those dried herbs immediately after harvest. Our CBD with Anti-Inflammatory Herbs Salve is super fresh, along with the Healing and Respiratory Salves. Check out our other products. Glycerides have a shelf life of up to two years, while tinctures have been known to last 10 years under proper storage conditions. There are lots of yucky things going around right now; help support your body with Vitamin C Tincture and Elderberry Syrup.
Quarter Spring Farm:
Cold weather is hard on your skin. Protect your body’s largest organ with goat milk soap or lotion from quarter spring farm. We also have lots of delicious chicken to warm your belly on these cold winter days.
Body & Soul Teas:
I made a batch of Shoo-Flu this weekend. This blend combines, elderberry, hibiscus and red raspberry leaf, ginger and mints.
Whenever I am sick, I like to prepare several servings at a time and pour it into a thermal bottle so that the tea stays hot and I can sip it throughout the day. I also like to enjoy broths or soups; my favorite is Tom Yum soup (spice level 2 with extra ginger)
Pat’s Sore Throat Tea
Juice of half a lemon
1-2 dried sage leaves(can also use fresh, but maybe use just 1 leaf)
Fresh ginger, about 2t, chopped
8-12 oz water
Honey
Cayenne pepper(optional)
Add the water to a pot along with the above ingredients. Bring to boil. Cover and simmer 15-20 minutes. Strain and add honey to sweeten.
This is made to taste, so adapt ingredient accordingly. If I am using organic lemon, I will add chop up the lemon and add it to the mixture as well. I like ginger, so I add a little bit more than 2t. I add cayenne for it’s numbing effect. Just a dash will do ya! I like honey as a sweetener, not just because it taste good but because it has its own healing properties. Its soothing to the mucous membrane of the throat and fights germs. Did you know it was used in WW1 for wounds? And, when it comes to honey, local is best, so be sure to check out the Singing Bee honey available here on the market.
Everybody is different so if you are a person that is more warm/ natured, I would omit the sage, ginger and cayenne and add peppermint to the lemon and honey.
I also have herbal steams available. These are great for nasal congestion and coughs. Steep herbs in a Mason jar or pot or add them directly to hot water and drape your head with a towel to inhale the steam for 5-10 minutes.
May you be blessed body & soul! Pat Greene
Ewe and Me Creamery:

Currently we have Valentine’s Day Sheep Milk Soaps available.

GROWER & MARKET NOTES
Mt. Moriah Farms What an eventful week here on the farm! We have three new additions! Vivian and Blossom both kidded out and their babies are doing fantastic! Vivian had twin bucklings and Blossom had a single buckling. We named them Cupid, Casanova, and Felix! At a week old (as long as the kids are progressing in growth without any issues) we start pulling them off the moms in the evening and put them back with the moms after the morning milkings! We then use the milk we get to make our 100% goat milk soaps! This does several things… First, it ensures the kids are used to being handled; secondly, it starts the weaning process; thirdly, it keeps the mom’s milk production up. The moms will start to naturally wean the kids off and the milk supply will start to go down. Since we milk them for 9 months out of the year we want to keep that production going! Enjoy the pictures, they are cutie pies for sure!
AVALON FARMS Wendy sends word that she won’t be listing again this week as they as still in Virginia dealing with a family medical emergency. She thanks everyone for their prayers.
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
Miami County Locally Grown: Ordering closes tonight! (and a winter memory...)
Support our local Market by ordering here!
This winter weather just makes me feel like sharing a story. I’ve always loved the snow. I had just turned five during the blizzard of 1978 (I realize I just told my age…) I had a long beautiful pink dress with butterflies appliqued to the front that my mom had made for me because we were going to my favorite uncle’s wedding in Indiana. We had left home but, due to the blizzard, had to stop at a hotel and miss the wedding. I remember being so sad because I had looked forward to the wedding for a long time.
But my dad made snowy weather so fun for my older brother and two younger sisters and me. He made a huge snow couch with us that year, and every day I took a bowl of Lipton soup outside for lunch and ate it on the snow couch until it melted. He always took us to the levy to go sledding if there was any snow at all, and he loved to do donuts in the Hobart parking lot in our big van. (My mom was home making hot chocolate on the stove – otherwise there would have been no parking lot donuts for us!)
Next weekend we’ll be going up north to the U.P. of Michigan for the Sled Dog Races. I can’t wait! They usually have a couple feet of snow on the ground all winter up there. Luckily, if we don’t get enough snow down here, I can always head up north for a good dose of winter weather!
