Market News
Some of you have already taken advantage of the many seedlings available for your fall gardens. I always say the fall is my favorite time to garden in Athens, even though many people shut their gardens down as the first frost approaches. It still feels like summer outside, but this coming weekend I’d like to get in there and start planting broccoli, collards, cabbage, kohlrabi, kale, Brussels sprouts, and more. There are fifty-nine varieties of veggie and herb seedlings listed this week and I expect more to arrive in the coming weeks. Usually we’ve got a better selection than you can find at most garden centers this time of year.
Tomorrow’s holiday always sparks discussions of indigenous peoples and colonization. I’d like to plant an idea with you: think about all of the wonderful indigenous foods of North America, many of which have fallen into obscurity. See if you can find some to add to your diet this fall, even if it’s just to try something new for one single meal. Native plants are almost always a better choice to grow than species and varieties not adapted to our environment, but growers won’t plant them if there’s not a demand. Here’s one interesting list to get you started, and you’ll recognize some of them from the ALG listings throughout the year: 20 Native North American Foods with Stories to Tell.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

CLG: Tamales! Opening Bell: Coffee, Ghost Peppers, Pork, Eggs!
Good afternoon!
October is Garlic planting month at Cedar Rock Ridge. Growing the world’s finest Garlic takes over 200 days and lots of care and attention. Lots of nitrogen, but not too much. Lots of moisture, but evenly spaced throughout the season. It needs a good cold spell to divide into cloves. But everything is worthwhile when you taste the delicious flavor from fresh, organic Garlic. Coming in June 2019!
Check out the new items from Bradford Valley Farm: Pork Sausage and Pork Bratwurst!
Being harvested now: Naga Bhut Jalokia Ghost Peppers! These beautiful pods are extremely hot, about 250 times hotter than a jalapeño. Checking in at just over 1 million Scoville units of heat, the ghost Pepper is an excellent base for homemade hot sauce. This Pepper demands respect. Be careful!
Now is the perfect time to plant perennial flowers that will bloom starting in the spring. We have plenty of old-fashioned Hellebores, Shamrock, Red, Yellow, Purple, and Cream Coneflowers, beautiful magenta-flowered rose Campion, white Bee Balm and others. Search PLANT to see everything that’s available now.
This Friday, Doña Estela and her amazing homemade Tamales! She will make them Friday morning and have them at market Friday afternoon. They will be 5 for $7 in 3 flavors: Pork, Chicken, or Jalapeño & Cheese (Jalapenos from Cedar Rock Ridge). To place an order, please add a note to your CLG order, or text me at 501-339-1039. If you do that, she will have your Tamales labeled for you. Delicious with sides of refried beans and rice, topped with a bit of salsa. They freeze very well so get some for several meals.
Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Over 500 items available now!
Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!
And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)
The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

Dawson Local Harvest: NEW THIS WEEK on The Harvest!
Dawson Local Harvest for October 12th
NEW THIS WEEK on The Harvest!
HI EVERYBODY!
I always like it when I have New Products to talk about for this week’s Market. Renee, the baker for MY DAILY BREAD, has developed new offerings that will be great for Football, Fall and Holiday get-togethers. For starters, how about Cheese Dip Bread Bowls, featuring our scrumptious Beer-Buzzed or Buffalo Blue Cheese Dips in a 6" Sourdouch Bread Bowl. Great for hosting parties, “bring-a-snack” gatherings, or Football night, and you Save a Dollar with the Combo! In Ethnic / Specialties. Also New are Sourdough Soup Bowls, ready for your favorite Hot Soup, Chili, warm Dips, and more. 2 Soup Bowls per Order, 2 orders gives you 4 for a tummy-warming dinner. And there’s more, a new delicious Challah braided white loaf, an excellent sub for French bread and a wonderful Holiday table bread. Find the Soup Bowls and Challah in the Loaf Breads listing.
Speaking of baking, if you like to bake try our Freshly-milled Organic Hard Red Wheat, 5 lbs. for $7.00, which is an excellent price. In the Flour, Grains, & Milled section along with Stone-ground Grits form BACK IN TIME.
The beautiful (and tasty) Eggs from BEAR RIDGE LODGE are back on The Market again, and in case you haven’t noticed, our Local Wildflower Honey is now available in an economy sized heavy quart (44 oz. $20.00) to go along with the heavy (22oz.) Pint and the Squeeze Bear. In Honey, naturally.
Eggplant, Purple Okra, several Pepper varieties, Heirloom Tomatoes and Cherry Tomatoes are still available on The Market, and several more choices like Zucchini and Squash will rejoin the Vegetable listings the next couple of weeks. And don’t forget about those delectable Oyster & Lion’s Mane Mushrooms! It may be Fall, but there’s still good eating in the neighborhood.
THE MARKET IS NOW OPEN!
REMEMBER! You can now order until Tuesday night at 9 pm. Pick up your order at Leilani’s Gardens Friday afternoons from 4 to 6 pm.
