Champaign, OH: Sisters and Brothers
My Sunday Soul Search…the gospel of Jerry Garcia singing, My Sisters and Brothers…and, really, what lovely lyrics for the time we are in…
I wanna say to my sisters and my brothers
Keep the faith
When the storm flies and the wind blows
Go on at a steady pace
When the battle is fought and the victory’s won
We can all shout together we have overcome
We’ll talk to the Father and the Son
When we make it to the promised land
If we walk together little children
We don’t ever have to worry
Through this world of trouble
We gotta love one another
Let us take our fellow man by the hand
Try to help him to understand
We can all be together forever and ever
When we make it to the promised land
Our bible reads
Thou shall not be afraid
Of the terror by night
Nor the arrow that flies by day
Nor for the pestilence
That waiteth in the darkness
Nor for the destruction
That waiteth in the noon-day hour
If we walk together little children
We don’t ever have to worry
Through this world of trouble
We gotta love one another
Let us take our fellow man by the hand
Try to help him to understand
We can all be together forever and ever
When we make it to the promised land
This world is not our home
We’re only passing through
Our trail is all made up
Way beyond the blue
Let us do the very best that we can
While we’re travelin’ through this land
We can all be together shakin’ a hand
When we make it to the promised land
If we walk together little children
We don’t ever have to worry
Through this world of trouble
We gotta love one another
Let us take our fellow man by the hand
Try to help him to understand
We can all be together forever and ever
When we make it to the promised land
When we make it to the promised land
Make it to the promised land
(Sisters)
Make it to the promised land
(Little children)
Make it to the promised land
Make it to the promised land
(Children)
Make it to the promised land
We can all be together forever and ever
When we make it to the promised land
Walk together little children
We won’t ever have to worry
Through this world of trouble
We gotta love one another
Let us take our fellow man by the hand
Try to help him to understand
We can all be together forever and ever
When we make it to the promised land
We can all be together forever and ever
When we make it to the promised land
(Jerry Garcia Band)
Good morning, lovely little market of love customers. Just sending out my love, my gratitude, and my soul, today, to thank you, all, for being part of this ever growing market brotherhood/sisterhood.
It’s Sunday, and it’s looking lovely out there. A perfect time to go, breathe in the fresh air, bask in a bit of sunlight on your faces, and maybe just have your own soulful kind of day. Your market manager is taking off for a midday, social distanced, outdoor picnic with a dear friend…it’s been so long for much needed girl chat time!
Anyway…wherever your day takes you, know that we are always here for you, to take care of your weekly nutritional needs, and we love all of the smiling faces that come out on Thursdays…
I added a few new soups, this time, and am adding a few new bread varieties…thank you for being so Cosmically supportive.
Sending all the love vibes…
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
Washtenaw Organic Collaborative: Ordering Open: Washtenaw Organic Collaborative
Welcome to live ordering on Washtenaw Organic Collaborative. Thank you so much for your interest! This is our first week of live orders on a new system we created in a few short weeks – we thank you in advance for your patience!
Also, please know that we will be slowly growing the number and variety of items, as well as the number and variety of growers/vendors. We hope you will continue to check in on us each week!
We are OPEN FOR ORDERING through April 22. PICKUP (or delivery) is APRIL 25.
HOW IT WORKS Online ordering will open weekly Sundays-Wednesdays. We will harvest and pack on Thursday-Friday. Pickup/delivery will be Saturdays.
STEP 1) SET UP an account, which you have done if you are receiving this email.
STEP 2) PLACE AN ORDER login and you can place orders on The Market page (and receive email updates from market managers). When you have completed your order, double check the number of items to make sure you have what you want. If you would like to have your items delivered you must have the DELIVERY item in your basket/cart. Then click ORDER. You will be able to choose your pickup location or designate delivery and pay with a credit card. You’ll receive a receipt by email.
STEP 3) PICK UP Orders will be packed individually and labeled with your name and a pack list. We will have on farm pickup protocols to ensure everyone’s safety for the duration of COVID-19. Please stay tuned for guidelines and directions. DELIVERY orders (to select zip codes) will be left on your doorstep Saturday mid-morning to mid-day.
PLEASE NOTE: Garden Seedlings and Tree orders are pre-order only. (We support and are following the spirit of the State’s “Stay Home Save Lives” order and currently focusing on food.) Should we be unable to deliver them to you during May you will receive a refund.
PLEASE NOTE: All submitted orders are considered final on Thursday. Ordered items we cannot fulfill will be refunded. At this time, we cannot accommodate late pickups or switching of pickup locations. We cannot accommodate specific delivery time requests. Missed pickup items will be donated to a good recipient or back to the vendors.
Thank you very much for your support!
Magney Legacy Ridge Farm: CSA #8
Dear CSA-ers,
For this week there will be no preassembled bag (unless you have prior arrangements with Angela). Custom orders may now be placed on the online market: https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market
We are aware the selection of produce we are offering this week is limited. In light of this we are not listing preassembled bag and are waiving our $20 minimum order for this week. This is the difficulty of the early Spring shoulder season we have alluded to in previous newsletters. After some discussion the team came to a consensus that this would be the fairest way to address this temporary shortage. Next week we expect to have more abundant variety of the produce that you love packed into your bags. The team will continue to work hard to plant and harvest, making our CSA the best it can be for you, our customers.
Planting season is going full steam on the farm with broccoli, kohlrabi, herbs, and cucumbers going into the ground this week. In the direct-seeded plots, we see emergence on beets, carrots, radishes, spinach, and arugula. Some of our very earliest outdoor plantings are starting to reach maturity such as the arugula, swiss chard, radishes, and kale. This is still very much the early Spring and as we have previously stated, bags will contain a lot of greens in the next month. Though our high tunnel greenhouses offer us some capacity to get vegetables out earlier, there are still seasonal limitations on what we can and cannot grow. Please be patient during this time and embrace eating seasonally. We hope, in doing so, you feel more connected to our region and its cycle of seasons.
Speaking of seasonal limitations, this past week of extremely late frosts has thrown us for a bit of a loop. Despite a very mild winter, we have had two significant frosts since our last newsletter. This is unusual for Mid-April. Taking inventory of the fields there seems to be little more than some nipping on our cool weather loving Spring crops, but one of the varieties of cucumbers set in the high tunnels took severe damage. This took us by surprise. It is our hope that this row will recover, though it is possible it will have to be replanted. Agriculture, particularly the sustainably minded organic agriculture we practice, is full of challenges. Yet on a crisp morning, hearing birdsong, breathing the clean air, and watching the dawn light illuminate a field of kale bejeweled in dew, all the challenges seems worth it.
Okay, so we went a little wild with Kale this year, planting 4 different varieties. Think of varieties as a unique “twist” on a crop. To start with, there is ‘Darkibor’ variety, a classic sea-green kale with heavy curled leaves, great for steaming. Another returning favorite is ‘Toscano,’ an ice blue Italian kale with thick, bumpy leaves that is great in soups. Similar in appearance, but with a dramatic purple ribbing is the ‘Dazzling Blue’ variety; its flatter leaves make it perfect for easy kale chips. Then new to the lineup is ‘White Russian’ which is our most tender kale with frilly leaf edges perfectly textured for fresh eating with dressings in Kale salads. Our ‘Mixed Kale Bundle’ will contain multiple varieties, but we invite you to get to know each of them individually. Some of how we choose which varieties to every year comes from customer feedback, so let us know if you have a favorite!

As always, thank you so much for supporting our effort to establish an organic farm in Western Kentucky. We look forward to serving you the best of our land’s bounty.

The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

BREAD BOUQUETS
Are you sick of the Rona? I think most of us are. So we’re skipping with any talk about that this week to check out some fun FOOD. Part of the inspiration for this is four sourdough cinnamon raisin english muffins that someone shared with me yesterday. Since this person does not bake for the Market they shall remain anonymous, and since they’ll read this, THANK YOU, and they are DELICIOUS.
Check this out:

Beautiful Foccacia is not a new thing. Our own Wendy at Avalon Farms sometimes makes lovely Foccacia using seasonings and veggies from her farm.

MARKET CHITCHAT

This section is a reprint from last week’s newsletter for the benefit of our new customers.
I. Order Payment:
1. Voluntarily prepay by 6 pm Thursday if possible using this PAYPAL link. This eliminates passing paper currency back and forth or handling of debit/credit cards on site. Your invoice will be marked PAID and pickup is fast and easy.
2. You may use PAYPAL curbside on Friday. Not quite as efficient as we have to verify receipt but it does work.
3. Debit/Credit – yes, we still take cards using our regular system. We just have to get within 6 feet for you to put your card in the chip reader. We do our best to avoid touching your card or you touching the equipment which means we sign an “x” for your signature.
4. Cash and Checks – please put them in a plastic baggie or bank bag. If you want to put them in your trunk/tailgate that would eliminate the need to come near the drivers window
II. Curb Service:>/b> It’s OK to pull up next to the building. In fact we recommend it as tractor trailers sometimes need to share that space. Have your trunk/ hatchback open and we’ll load you up!
GROWER NOTES
MAYIM FARM Fresh moringa is back! Use with your salads, soups or put it in your smoothie! It is one of the most nutritious plants on earth.
AVALON FARM: First off, a BIG Thank You to all of you that brought egg cartons last week! We all appreciate them and will put them to good use. Keep ’em coming.
This week the 2nd crop of squash seeds made it into the ground. Also planted: a row of asparagus beans (aka yard long beans or Asian beans), delicata squash (aka sweet potato squash) and honeydew melons (aka yummy).

Learned something new this week….these caterpillars make Common Buckeye butterflies. I’ve been finding these all over the “natural areas” (weeds growing on edges and walkways of gardens). I was afraid it was early army worms that needed to be done away with, but a quick Google search saved them from certain death….as long as they stay on the weeds!
Another big round of storms tomorrow. Batten down the hatches. The chicks have been issued life vests and had their lifeboat drill. They are ready.
See you on the other side.

Champaign, OH: Part One-The Vendors
Since the market has been growing by leaps and bounds, and we have so many new customer faces, I have asked the vendors to write up their story, their lives, their products so that you get to read and know about each of us…
The first installment is from Marc and Shary Stadler of Valley View Woodlands…
As owners of Valley View Woodlands, we would like to welcome new members to our LocallyGrown.net virtual farmers market. We are fifth generation farmers on our family farm in the beautiful Mad River Valley. We enjoy producing maple syrup which you can find in our product listing. Our syrup is produced in small batches, never blended, so that we can offer our customers syrup in golden, amber and dark color and flavor. Each is unique and special in its own delicious way. Syrup—it’s not just for pancakes, waffles, and French toast. There are endless numbers of ways to use real Champaign County maple syrup. Yogurt, ice cream, BBQ sauce, baking, and cocktails are just a few.
You will find our maple syrup in beautiful glass bottles that showcase the beauty and clarity of the syrup. We also offer syrup in larger plastic jugs. Either way they make great gifts as well as invaluable staples in your kitchen pantry.
Valley View Woodlands also produces fresh pawpaws, which are available in the fall, as well as potted pawpaw trees for folks who would like to grow their own pawpaws. In recent years, pawpaws have taken the culinary world by storm, as featured on the covers of many food magazines. This is a delicious native fruit with a banana-mango flavor that will make you wonder how such a delicious tropical-flavored fruit grows in our gardening zone. Watch for our listing of fruit and trees in the fall.
Thank you for being a member of our locally grown market.

Champaign, OH: Put A Little Love In Your Heart
Think of your fellow man, lend him a helping hand
Put a little love in your heart
You see, it’s getting late, oh, please don’t hesitate
Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
And the world will be a better place for you and me
You just wait and see
Another day goes by, and still the children cry
Put a little love in your heart
If we want the world to know, we won’t let hatred grow
Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
And the world will be a better place for you and me
You just wait and see, wait and see
Take a good look around and if you’re lookin’ down
Put a little love in your heart
I hope when you decide kindness will be your guide
Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
And the world will be a better place for you and me
You just wait and see
People now
Put a little love in your heart
Each and every day
Put a little love in your heart
There’s no other other
Put a little love in your heart
We ought to
Put a little love in your heart
Come on and
Put a little love in your heart
(Jackie DeShannon)
Just a little song that I woke up singing…and, I also hope that this little local market of love is putting the love in your heart, soul, and lives…
We have so much to offer, and so much more coming! It’s exciting times for this market that keeps shining bright!
Did you also know that your market manager does her shopping at this market? I get so excited to order, pack my box, and bring it all home to have for the week.
Yesterday, I made a huge salad for my lunch using Old Souls lettuces, the two varieties of microgreens from Truck Patch Naturals, cheese from Blue Jacket, and sprinkled the jalapeno spice from JCGrowers! For my breakfast, I used the Lemon Quark, from Blue Jacket, on my rice cakes! And, all the while, lighting my candles from Old Farmhouse Candles…
I love this market, it’s products, it’s vendors, it’s customers…
It’s Saturday, and it’s a good day to order, and a great day to show the love to everyone you encounter…
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Know someone who wants fresh food? Spread the word. Put the two together, and that’s growing organically!
