Comment from Manager: Thank you only seems like 2 small words but they are HUGE words with great impact to our great list of Growers that have came to my aide and Ben’s during our time of needs. I can not stress enough the benefits from the Teas, Tonics, Soup, prayers that have strengthen through all of this. As I slowly improve I will continue the Herbs and Salve that have gotten me through some rough evenings.
Especial THANK YOU to Justin and Mari for handling the Market and managing things for us and all others that have helped.
News from our Growers:
JUST ADDED FROM:
Sow’s Ear Piggery: Just in from the Butcher! Pork cutlets, boneless loin roast, Boston butts, Tenderloin, bottom round roasts. USDA, non-GMO, non-corn/soy, free range pork. We will be adding more cuts next week.
Sassy Cassies: has brought all our yummy side dishes back for Easter. And we have a special yeast roll for Easter morning — Carrot Cake. There are carrots in the dough, rolled up around golden raisin that have marinated in pineapple juice, combined with brown sugar and warm spices. A pecan-cream cheese icing completes theses.
Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: The very early perennial plants are coming to life very nicely. While many of them are not yet in bloom, it’s a very good time to plant them so you will be able to enjoy their whole bloom season. In bloom now is Mukdenia, the odd plant that blooms before its leaves emerge. Also the Jacob’s ladder, a couple of pincushion flowers, and Euphorbia are blooming. More perennials will be sure to burst forth in color next week! The flowering almond is a beautiful small shrub which adds to the early spring display. If you are looking for a houseplant, I have also added several African violets back to the market this week as well. While the yellow and white daffodils have finished their show, the later doubles and multi-flowers should be doing well this week. If you’d like to return your vase and/or packing box, I will be glad to recycle them.
Carole’s Herbs (CS3 Farm): We have roasted red pepper hummus, ginger fig shrub concentrate, herbal honey, herbal teas, mustard, dried wild oyster mushrooms, lettuce, Kale and some more winter salad mix.
Farrar Farm LLC: There are 3 great choices for the upcoming Holiday Menu. Our delicious Ground Beef Special is purchase 5 pounds and get an extra pound FREE! Ground Sirlon and Korean Style Short Ribs is always are great holiday treat.

Body & Soul Teas: We offer teas for sipping and teas for soaking. Our herbal tea blends nourish and support the body and soul. Our most popular blend, Tennessee Sunshine, is a tribute to the place I have called home for the past 18 years. It contains hibiscus, rose, and mints which impart a sweet, tart taste. It is delicious served hot or cold. We also offer blends that support specific body functions such as stress relief and digestive support.
Our bath teas and soaks offer soothing relief and relaxation to tired achy bodies. To see our full product line, read our blog, and join our newsletter, please go to http://www.bodysoulteas.com.
May you be blessed body and soul. Pat
Barefoot Acres Herbs: This week I will be working on lymphatic cleanse salve and some lotion bars. NOTE from Manager: I doubt I would not be as far as I’ve come if it wasn’t for her Healthy Soup and Salves.
Valentine Family Farm: It feels great being back on the market with one of our most requested pickles. Our delicious Pickled Okra as well as our SPICY Pickled Okra.Pickled Okra are the most beautiful and subtly complex pickles you will ever have. Our pickles include seasonal and locally wild-crafted ingredients including industrial hemp of the Finola variety. We personally grew this hemp as part of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Pilot program. We carefully place these ingredients in the jar to display their beauty. The combination of these ingredients pickled together creates a flavor that is subtly complex like no other. Our pickles are hand made in small batches and are produced in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. We recommend ordering more than one jar. This is because many of our first time customers struggle with purchasing one jar and finishing its contents on the way home. As the seasons change we will update the ingredients. All of the ingredients are edible. Ingredients: Okra, onions, garlic, dill, Sweet Goldenrod (Solidago odora), water, apple cider vinegar, salt, peppercorns(red, green, black), lemon, Staghorn Sumac Fruit (Rhus typhina),red pepper flakes, dill seed, mustrad seed, Peppergrass (Lepidium Virginicum), Industrial Hemp (Cannabis sativa L), Queen Anne’s Lace (Daucus carota), Bushy Beard Lichen (Usnea strigosa)
Flying S Farms: Taking a brief break out of the kitchen this week, our Chicken Eggs remain available.
Delivery Service is available within a 10 mile radius of Murfreesboro, outside areas will be considered and delivery is available to Woodbury at a host location. Hello, just your market manager enjoying this lovely sunshine day, blasting her music, and soaking up all that life has to offer.
But, for one moment…this song, for me, is spring. Just full of good times, rock and roll, and ready for action.
This market is all of those things, as well. You can tell that spring is in the air, customers are venturing out after the winter. I feel a sense of freedom. I feel good times on the horizon. I feel the music moving me.
I just wanted to remind you that the market will close, tomorrow morning, at 8am. This is your market to get all of your Easter prep ready!!
And, in the coming weeks, we will see your favorite Kingdom Fish start to also offer their microgreens!! And, they are working on other plantings, just for you!!
Our favorite alpaca farmer is also planting/growing, and will have his own fresh produce to offer, and I have also asked him to think about offering plant starts for all of you so you can begin your own gardens!!
The market, itself, is ready to take off in an extended direction, to kick off our anniversary month of 10 years, in May, and your Hippie manager is also going to launch a little fun side project for you all to enjoy!!
The greenhouse expansion is coming along so nicely, and painting is next on the agenda!! It’s already being rented out for events, this season, and that makes me so happy!
This market has it all…and, more!!
We’ve got that real local love, that real local trust, and that real local vibe!! Keeping it real, just for you!!
Now…go, order, and don’t miss out on this week’s fun!!
Can’t you see, what you all mean to me?
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Market News
Apart for the storms, the weather most of last week was (and this coming week will be) absolutely beautiful. Just perfect for getting outside and enjoying a day at the park, or walking through the neighborhood, or working out in the garden. You might think, what with the daytime temps comfortably in the 70s and the traditional farmers markets all opening up again that it’s the perfect time to put those tomato seedlings you picked up at market or the plant sale into the garden. It is prime gardening season, but keep your eye on those summer plants just a little bit longer! We’re going to have at least one freeze this week, and there will be more cold nights ahead. That’s enough to severely damage those summer veggies, most of which are tropical plants that can’t handle even the slightest bit of cold. For tomatoes and basil, I’d recommend holding off until the nights are reliably in the 50s for optimal growth. You can start them sooner and they’ll survive nights in the 40s, but it doesn’t do them any good at all and generally stunts them for the rest of the year.
I know when you see those gorgeous plants for sale the urge is strong to go home and put them right into the ground when the weather is nice. I have to fight that urge off every year, too, and I’ve had a garden going most every year of my life. Go ahead and buy them and get to know them, but keep them in the pots and bring them inside at night for just a little while longer. They’ll thank you later.
Ordinarily we’d have dozens or even hundreds of seedlings available here through ALG, but that was one of the casualties of having to go into pandemic mode. I still haven’t come up with a good way to have them come from the grower in a way where we can organize them by customer and have them ready to load into your trunks. We’ve gotten really good at everything else, but that’s still a mystery. I’ll be keeping an ear out for plant sales and other ways you can get locally grown seedlings, and I’ll pass them along to you as I find them.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you at our market’s home on Tallassee Road!
We are still getting new customers every week (and we love seeing new masked faces!) so for all of you you can find a detailed run-down of how Thursdays go on our website here: https://athens.locallygrown.net/faq#7
Other Area Farmers Markets
If ALG doesn’t have everything you need, please support our growers at the other markets that are now back up and running, or at their own locations. The Comerian takes online orders for Saturday pickup at the bakery here: https://www.thecomerian.com/online-ordering. The Athens Farmers Market is holding their Saturday market once again in Bishop Park. They’re still operating under pandemic rules, so you’ll want to read up on all the changes on their website, http://athensfarmersmarket.net. The West Broad Farmers Market is back, holding a drive through market just like us (and using my software too, so it’ll be nice and familiar). You can join them at https://wbfm.locallygrown.net. The Culinary Kitchen of Athens has started a socially distanced winter market, Saturdays from 11am to 2pm at Hendershots on Prince. And of course Collective Harvest is going strong over at https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
