Market News
This week marks the equinox and the first official day of Summer. Looks like it’ll be a beautiful start to it too, weather-wise. The days won’t get too hot, and we’ll be getting plenty of rain. The summer veggies love this weather (the tomato plants in my garden are going gangbusters) and even the leafy greens are able to keep on producing. I know it’ll never happen, but I wouldn’t mind if the rest of the summer stayed just like this.
I ate the first Cherokee Purple slicing tomatoes from my garden this weekend, and I see Sundance has the very beginnings of their heirloom slicers listed this week too. It’s still early in the season for them, so they’re extremely limited in quantity. I know many of you have been waiting since last summer for them, and they’ll be plentiful really soon now.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you at our market’s home on Tallassee Road!
We are still getting new customers every week (and we love seeing new masked faces!) so for all of you you can find a detailed run-down of how Thursdays go on our website here: https://athens.locallygrown.net/faq#7
Other Area Farmers Markets
If ALG doesn’t have everything you need, please support our growers at the other markets that are now back up and running, or at their own locations. The Comerian takes online orders for Saturday pickup at the bakery here: https://www.thecomerian.com/online-ordering. The Athens Farmers Market is holding their Saturday market once again in Bishop Park. They’re still operating under pandemic rules, so you’ll want to read up on all the changes on their website, http://athensfarmersmarket.net. The West Broad Farmers Market is back, holding a drive through market just like us (and using my software too, so it’ll be nice and familiar). You can join them at https://wbfm.locallygrown.net. The Saturday market in Comer has also returned. They’re small, but sometimes an early Saturday drive to Comer is just what the soul needs. And of course Collective Harvest is going strong over at https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Martin's Farmstand: U-pick on Monday June 21- lots of strawberries available
We will open the Strawberry patches for u-pick on Monday June 21 starting at 7 AM. This is the late part of the peak season- there are lots of berries that need picked tomorrow. The big patch way in the back has especially good picking now. This is the second week of the season and the average berry size is dropping (this is normal) There are still some green berries left so I judge we will be picking on u-pick days for another 7-10 days. At that point of the season the patch goes into half price gleaning status for as long as there are small berries left.
Hours for u-pick are Monday starting
at 7 AM; Wednesday, start 2 PM (no morning picking on Wednesdays); Saturday, start 7 AM. This repeats through out the whole season. The patch closes when the berries are all picked or at 6 PM. Daniel
