Martin's Farmstand:  Setting up the plant table, heat mats and lights

The farm stand is open today (Saturday January 29) from noon till 5 pm. Come to us for a selection of the normal winter veggies and bulk foods. We have lots of freshly dried apples made from our homegrown organic heirloom apples. Take a look a the list below.
It is so cold now, however spring is expected in about 10-12 weeks from now. Today we are planning to set up the plant table, heat mats and lights in the living room to start tomatoes, kale, and early lettuce for setting out in the solar greenhouse in March. In about 4 weeks it is time to seed 70,000 onion seeds and start heating a greenhouse. We do not heat the greenhouse early on when the plants are few enough to fit in the house under lights. February still has the potential to be very cold. Enjoy the wonders of winter now as the seasons move on quickly and surely. Daniel

Champaign, OH:  Flourish! Flowers! Valentine's Day!

Good morning, lovely market customers!!

I’m spending this very cold morning with a cup of coffee, rewatching one of my favorite movies, and bringing you the news of flowers!!

Listen up…because this is going to be a fun, yet different way for you to get flowers, ON VALENTINE’S DAY, from the market!!

First…our girls from Flourish have come up with a great plan to put some florals into your life, via the market, and just for Valentine’s Day.

Second…the pick up, FOR FLOWERS ONLY, will be on the MONDAY, of Valentine’s Day, at the market site greenhouse, between the hours of 11am-12pm!! You can stop, pick up your order, and then be on your way with the beauty of florals!!

Third…the rest of the market orders will be handled, like always, with a Thursday pick up!!

Fourth…to make it easy on your market managers, to keep the Monday orders separate, PLEASE PLACE YOUR FLOWER ORDERS, THEN PLACE YOUR MARKET ORDERS!! And, you can of course just order flowers that week, but I do need the orders to be separated!

Fifth…payment will be as always, on that Monday. If your card is on file, I will run your flowers on that. If you are paying by check, please make it out, as always, to Oakview Farm Meats. If you are paying with cash, PLEASE put it in a ziplock bag, WITH YOUR NAME. This makes it all so easy to keep track!!

And…now that I have given you my market manager speech, I am going to include a note from the Flourish girls…

You can’t hurry love… but we just couldn’t wait to share our brand new Valentine’s Day flower menu with you!

We’ve designed a stunning Valentine’s Day flower menu making it easy to impress your sweetheart or gal-pal.

Dozen roses ($35) or a half dozen proteas ($25)

Classic Vs. Quirky
Choose your adventure! ????

Stop by the market between 11am-12pm on Feb. 14th and you grab your bouquet and be on your way! Orders must be placed by Feb.4th

ONE MORE NOTE…You may begin ordering the florals, NOW, and I will be keeping track of your orders, putting them aside for that Monday pick up!! There are limited quantities, so act fast!!

Champaign, OH:  Till The Next Time

Now that’s a recipe I sure do need
Some cider vinegar and some elderberry wine…
(Rolling Stones)

Good morning, lovely little local market customers! It’s another snowy, cold day, and as I sit here, in the early morning glow, sipping coffee, I am playing old Rolling Stones tunes, while I work.

This song, to me, is just so beautiful, and, for some reason, The Stones are heavily played, in my bag of tricks, all winter. Also, I used the lyric for the elderberry wine, to reference our hardworking elderberry syrup/tincture vendor, Sarah Doty, with S&S Naturals.

I’ve become an elderberry fan, this winter, and I her products are just the best. She makes no medical claims, but the products are powerhouses of antioxidant loveliness…

So, when you are placing your orders, read up on her products…

And, along with all of our other hard working vendors, we are here, ready to get you through these winter days, where we may be your only sunshine of the week!!

Happy Friday, lovelies…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Miami County Locally Grown:  An Ecology lesson!

And now a thought from Caroline McColloch of Chez Nous Farms:

Here is your ecology lesson for the day! The connection between soil and human health is not especially obvious. The soil ecosystem, like that of the air, water, flora, and fauna is essentially a process of elements cycling through: soil is a vital part of the carbon, nitrogen, and water cycles, etc. This is really what sustainable means—renewable, recyclable.

Soil is very complex, with living and non-living components. It is negatively impacted by so-called modern “chemical agriculture”, which typically uses toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizer. Mostly involved in commodity grains like soy and corn, also included is genetically engineered seeds that produce plants designed to withstand the pesticides.

From a soil standpoint, pesticides interrupt much of the nutrient cycling through decimation of the soil microbes and invertebrate insects essential to that process. Chemical fertilizers do not have all the trace minerals and other complex biological compounds that are contained in good compost. When these are not put back into the soil after harvesting the biomass of your crop, then the soil is depleted in terms of what is subsequently contained in the plants that grow in it and the animals that eat those plants.

This is how the modern American (“Western”) diet is often characterized, that is to say, depleted of essential vitamins and minerals, compared to diets of several generations ago. It seems likely to me that these dietary deficiencies may be correlated with some of the chronic diseases that are so common.

Hence the need for diverse, small-scale, direct-to-consumer local farms that have good soil conservation practices! Hence the need to buy organic whenever possible. Lucky us to have MCLG! Can I get an amen?
