Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of Aug 7th 2016

As of Aug 7th , we can offer the following crops: cuccumber, young chard, beet root, beet tops, green onions, leek, rhubarb, kale, arugula, tomatoes, string beans (yellow, green and purple varieties), potatoes (cobbler and purple), garlic, and herbs: chives dill, spearmint, bronze fennel and lovage.

The new roaster chickens are in the freezers, whole halves and quarters. Same price as last year.

Could “we the people” handle a bit more of the truth? One would certainly like to think so. As it is, the US and the rest of the world appear to be sleepwalking into history’s greatest shitstorm of an election. The candidates bode ill for the immediate future. Given the absence of helpful leadership at the national level, our main opportunity for effective preparation and response to the wolf at our doorstep appears to lie in local resilience building. Check out Hamilton 350, Hamilton Permaculture Guild, or Environment Hamilton for local efforts and community building. All have facebook pages.

Surf over to Resilience.org for more on this.

We’d like to go ahead with the natural cheesemaking workship with David Asher, (google Black Sheep Cheesemaking) on Nov 11/12. There will also be a public lecture on the Friday evening. Could you indicate your interest in attending? Cost likely $200 for the weekend.

Healthy Eating

Market News

It’s back to school week for both the Athens public schools and UGA, and the town is already a madhouse. It’s easy to get caught up in the new routines and forget about the old, like picking up your ALG orders on Thursday. Please check the phone number on your account to be sure it’s one you can be reached at on a Thursday evening. I start making calls about 7:30, and every week there is someone who has forgotten completely. I know I’d forget myself sometimes if I weren’t already there, so there’s no shame in that.

Try to enjoy the back-to-school madness this week. Even if you have no little ones yourself in school, the town certainly changes this week from the sleepy small town it’s been the last few months. Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and Wednesdays from 11am-2pm in the atrium at St. Mary’s Hospital. They have a website too. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open for the season on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County Farmers Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running from 9-1. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

DeForest, WI:  Availability for the week of August 7

Recipes

Tomato Vinaigrette

This also makes a great sauce for pasta, or a dipping sauce for bread!

Makes about 1 cup
8 ounces very ripe tomatoes
1/4 cup sherry vinegar
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed
1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 clove garlic, grated
1/4 cup olive oil

Halve the tomatoes. Squeeze the halves into a fine-mesh strainer set over a bowl. You should get about 1/2 cup of tomato juice and pulp.

Add the vinegar, honey, 1/2 teaspoon salt, mustard, and garlic to the bowl and whisk to combine. While whisking, slowly pour in the oil. Continue to whisk until emulsified. Taste and season with more salt as needed.

Serve over arugula with cherry tomatoes, thinly sliced red onion, and feta.

Recipe Notes
Storage: This vinaigrette can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Let sit at room temperature 10 minutes and re-whisk before serving.

CLG:  Opening Bell: 10% OFF! Peaches, Eggs, Jams, Mushrooms!

Good afternoon!
Big news! Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson signed an official proclamation naming August 7-13, 2016 Arkansas Farmers Market Week. More than one hundred Farmers Markets across Arkansas play a key role in developing local and regional food systems that support the sustainability of family farms, revitalize rural communities and preserve Arkansas’s rich tradition of family farming.

For this week, every order over $50 will receive 10% off the entire order at Friday pick-up!!! Look around the site and stock up on some favorites, as well as some items you’ve never tried before. ALSO, KMG Farms has added chicken livers and gizzards, and they have 5 Meat Sampler Boxes on sale!!!

This is the time of year when most Growers transition from summer crops to fall crops. We try to coax a little more production from squash, tomatoes, etc. while planting vegetables to harvest as the weather cools. Take a look all around the market and you will find lots of goodies, some to enjoy now, and some to savor during the coming winter.

Don’t forget to check out the recipe page on Conway Locally Grown!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

Check out over 500 wonderful items listed right now. See you on Friday!

Come early on Friday for the best selection from the EXTRAS table. And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders.

Please check your email about 5 minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thank you for being a valuable part of CLG!
Have a great week!
