CLG:  Opening Bell: Potatoes, Squash, Apples, Kale!

Good afternoon!
Here’s something you won’t find at any other market in the state: MEALWORMS! You may be asking yourself, “Why would anyone want mealworms?” Although it has been over 40 years ago, I still remember my first mealworm operation. It gave me valuable experience in animal husbandry: a young boy caring for living creatures, checking on them daily, feeding them, watching their life cycle, and fishing with them! If you have young kids, grand-kids, chickens, or a husband, you should order a starter set now! Feed them to birds during the winter too! I have had my current colony for over 10 years. Never buy fishing bait again! They are clean and dry, and can be kept in the garage. I have mine in a 3-tier Rubbermaid chest on wheels. They live in chicken feed, and the only moisture they need is an occasional banana peel, peach pit, apple peelings, or piece of bread. The beetles lay eggs on potato peelings. Text me if you have any questions (501-339-1039).I could go on and on, and it looks like I have, but these guys are so interesting. Great for kids age 3 and up. They like to be held and will crawl on your hand, and never bite you. If you accidentally eat one, it’s OK. They’re high in protein and don’t have any bones! Get your starter set today!

Oh, and we also have lots of vegetables, meat, eggs, and canned goods available. :-)

Browse the market categories. Find your favorite items, or try something new. You may want to try the stuffed peppers and Cheesy spaghetti squash that I made for Carissa last week. It’s under the RECIPES tab. I have also asked Caleb to post the picture on our Facebook page Monday morning. Easy to make, and so delicious! Have something local at every meal this week!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

Check out over 600 wonderful items listed right now. See you on Friday!

Come early on Friday for the best selection from the EXTRAS table. And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders.

Please check your email about 5 minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thank you for being a valuable part of CLG!
Have a great week!
Steve

St. Simons Island Shrimp Specialist is back to the Market this week. Orders will be delivered the first week of October.

Even though the calendar will soon mark the beginning of the Fall season, our weather is not yet cooperating. The National Weather Service in Atlanta reported the following in its report on September 15:

Due to consistent very warm temperatures in the 80s and 90s with high evaporation rates, the soil moisture continues to decline in areas that received less than 2 inches of rain across North and West Central Georgia during the past two weeks. Consequently, a severe to extreme drought prevails over North and West Central Georgia, which includes the Atlanta Metro area. The driest areas were from Summerville to Dalton, Canton to Marietta, and LaGrange through Barnesville and McDonough to Madison.

The report went on to say:

For October, the outlook for North and Central Georgia is above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall. The drought conditions will persist.

It doesn’t take a climatologist to tell us that the dry weather has affected our plants. My husband’s little garden is just about spent. The squash and tomato vines are shriveling as I write this blog.

Please show our farmers your support through this drought.

Thanks,

Beverly

NEWS AND NOTES

It’s that time of year when there are lots of different herbs, fresh and dried, available from local farmers. So stock up for winter cooking!

Frontier Family Farm has added sweet potatoes to the market.

Linda from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse writes:
Perfect fall herb-planting time is here! Buy any herb plant offered by Dogwood Valley Greenhouse on the market (designated by “Herb Plant” in front of the name), and I will also give you a Stevia plant for free! I have some nice Stevia plants (see picture in listing), but they aren’t winter-hardy, and I have no way to overwinter them safely. However, if you move your new Stevia plant to a slightly larger pot, you will be able to bring it inside toward the end of October, and enjoy its sweetness in your drinks and baked goods all winter. For more information about and uses of Stevia, see http://stevia.com and http://stevia.net . Place your herb order soon, while my Stevia supplies last.

White City Produce & Greenhouses products are available this week.

We have these yummy summer vegetables available this week from local farmers: beans, beets, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, garlic, kohlrabi, lettuce, okra, onions, bell peppers, and red potatoes. Also you will find a great selection of fresh-cut herbs to help to bring out the flavor of those vegetables and your other summer cooking.

Remember that we also have delicious pork and beef cuts, organic free-range chicken and duck eggs, jams and jellies, live plants for your perennial border, porch, or patio. Please take note of our great selection of hand crafted farm products, candles, essential oils, and bath & beauty products. Stop by Square Books soon and see our market table, with lots of non-perishable farm products for sale. Pick up some jam or jelly, hand lotion or soap, herbal tea, a candle, or a basket of herb plants to enjoy or to give as a gift.

(L to R) Fresh Cilantro and Sweet Italian Basil from Loftus Family Farm, Sweet Potatoes from Frontier Family Farm, Stevia and Dwarf Red Carnation Plants from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse.

IMPORTANT ORDERING AND PICKUP INFORMATION

Ordering will be open until TUESDAY at 10 p.m., and your order will be available for pickup on THURSDAY between 4:00 and 5:30 at Square Books, 113 East Main Street, Manchester. We can also hold your order in the refrigerator till Friday, if it’s more convenient for you to pick it up between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. If you prefer to utilize this free service, please make a note on your order or call my cell at (931) 273-9708. If neither of those pickup times works for you, please make a note on the order, and we will work out an alternative arrangement.

Thanks so much for your support of Manchester Locally Grown Market, and your friends and neighbors who have grown and produced these items. We offer a great variety of local farm products, and our items will be in your hands in time to plan for the weekend. Wonderful local products are available for ordering from the comfort of your own computer.

More new farmers are considering joining our market, if they can expect enough sales to help pay their transportation costs. Please help us grow the market by sharing this e-mail with your friends and inviting them to give us a try. And if you haven’t ordered from Manchester Locally Grown for a while, please check out our wide variety of offerings this week. Also please let us know if we can improve our selection or scheduling in any way to better suit your needs.

Blessings,
Linda

Here is the complete list for this week.

ALFN Local Food Club:  Market Is Open!

ALFN Members,

Welcome to another week on the market full of amazing produce, fresh meats and hand-crafted products.

New Program & Market Manager

This past week, the board welcomed a new member into the ALFN community. Claire Hodgson will take over as the program manager at the end of this month. Yesterday, she was introducing herself to all of our members who came through the market. Truly, I’m excited to see how ALFN will continue to develop with Claire at the helm. She has a wheelbarrow full of ideas and passion that will benefit our local economy. Please extend a hearty welcome to Claire if you see her over the next few weeks.

I will continue to help and volunteer for various needs of ALFN, and I am excited to help with whatever ALFN projects come my way.

Voluteer Shifts

I would like to request renewed help for Saturday market volunteers. We had a fantastic team yesterday, but we’ve been a bit low over the last few weeks. If you haven’t tried volunteering for the market on Saturday, I would highly recommend you give it a try. The shifts are only two hours long starting with the Early Shift at 8:00 and the Late Shift at 10:00. Volunteers get to know more ALFN folks, drink good coffee, and earn credit towards the market ($5 credit per shift, or to monthly membership fee). Volunteers are an important part of what makes ALFN such a unique non-profit food hub. We can’t do it without you. Please sign up for weekends that work for you! Here is where you can sign up: Volunteers.

Thank you!!

Siloam Springs, AR:  Online Market is Open!

We held our 2nd Annual Farm to Table, a Summers’ End Farm Supper, September 11th and it was a very successful event! Thank you to all who were able to attend and thank you to R Family Farm for hosting the event.

Fall will soon be upon us and the outdoor market will be seeing some winter squash, an increase in greens, and the return of root vegetables like turnips, carrots, radishes and sweet potatoes.

The outdoor market will remain open through October 29th and then we will transition to the online market with Saturday morning order pick up at the Main Street Conference room.

Enjoy this beautiful weekend and see you at the market!

Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm week of Sept 18 2016

This week something different: Cami is running the farm solo! I’m away for a men’s conference in Minnesota till sunday next.
So please get your orders in by friday 9am so she has time to pick and sort.

The cool weather is helping the vegetables growing outside, but the greenhouses are now needing close up at nighttimes.

We have tomatoes, peppers, sweet and hot, green and yellow, cabbage, sorrel, potatoes, carrots, beans (three colours), kale, arugula, spinach, lettuces, garlic, leek, onion, eggplant, herbs (basil, lovage, sweet cicely, parsley, cilantro) and beets and chard. Hows that for a lot?

The lamb sausage is picking up aficionados, if you’ve never had it time to try. Chicken in halves and quarters, grown here, no wholes left. The pigs are fattening up quickly and very friendly towards humans. We’ll soon be moving them to the orchard to clean up groundfalls.

Lots of eggs, chicken and duck.

Cami is making sauces and preserves, like tomato sauce and juice, so if you want some, give us a note on your order.

We will be having our cider making day in early October. No date finalized yet.

Remember the cheese making workshop, Nov 12-13. $100 registration.

Healthy eating,
Ian and Cami
