Dothan, Alabama:  Market at Dothan Thanksgiving 2016 Issue

Dothan’s Sustainable Market is Now Open

UPDATE ON HAITI

Kirsty and Mackenzie returned from Haiti last week. Their visit to the island was an intense two weeks accessing the needs of the village and formulating a game plan to maximize the recovery effort for the farmers and farmer’s cooperative of Petit Trou.

In their initial efforts, Kirsten and MacKenzy have been working with the local leaders to organize and prioritize where aid money should go.  Those who had their homes decimated are at the top of the list.  Many volunteers worked to get supplies up the hillsides where the trucks could not travel and homes were hardest hit.  Also a top priority is the construction of tree nurseries.  With the additional money that Market at Dothan raised this past week, we will have more than fully funded one of those nurseries.  These nurseries are vital to the local economy because Haitians depend heavily on fruit trees for food.  These trees take years to bear fruit, so the money we raised will be put into action as soon as possible to build a nursery and plant trees.

THANK YOU for your part in making this happen! Kirsty and Mackenzie have not had a chance to update the blog at Haitians For Change yet but feel free to check out who they are and their work creating and now helping rebuild a sustainable farming community in this country. We at Market at Dothan are proud to stand with them and will continue to accept donations and seeds for rebuilding.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away! At my house our goal is to have the dining room back by that time so we can use the table. As it is there is still a lot of clutter to “unpack” and deal with from recent repairs. Only last night we moved five (5!) full size bookcases out of there.

With Thanksgiving in mind, be sure to read the Vendor remarks in the following section for the wonderful foods they are offering this week that are sure to make your preparations healthier and happier. I practically drooled reading the product description of Sweet Acre’s Pecan Pie Cheesecake.

For fun and inspiration we are sharing some fun Thanksgiving photo ideas in this newsletter.

Don’t forget about CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE on Thursday, December 1, 3pm – 7 pm. Order pickup will take place that day instead of Friday morning and our vendors will be on site with produce, vegetables and many goods to help get your Christmas season off to a good start. Make plans to join us!

More inventory is being updated too, like bacon and ground pork and cubed pork. CLG:  Opening Bell: NEW GROWER, Salsa, Cabbage, Broccoli, Cauliflower!

Good evening!
We have a new Grower! Funny Farm is located in Wooster and is managed by Nathaniel Ziegler. He has many kinds of animals on his 40 acre spread just outside Conway. It was by strange coincidence that our paths crossed, but we are very glad they did! Nathaniel stays busy making the final preparations to make sure his animals all have food and safe housing for the coming winter. Funny Farm will have duck eggs listed, and occasionally will have chicken and turkey eggs. Welcome, Nathaniel!

Maria’s Homemade Country Fare will be set up at this weeks market with all of your holiday favorite jams, chocolate covered cherries, pickles, snacks and more. She will have samples of Spinach dip and Caramel dip to taste…mmmmm!

This is the LAST market before Thanksgiving! We will NOT have a market the Friday after Thanksgiving, Nov 25th. Be sure to get all your holiday favorites before they sell out. Get some salsa and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, or some football games. You’ll also need some Cheese, Sweet Potatoes, Broccoli, Green Beans, Potatoes, Cauliflower, etc. There’s an abundance of fall produce on our market right now! If you haven’t done it before, this year try using fresh, local herbs in your dressing and gravy. Sage is most commonly used, but also rosemary, oregano, etc. Browse the market categories. Find your favorite items, or try something new.

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

Check out over 550 wonderful items listed right now. See you on Friday!

Come early on Friday for the best selection from the EXTRAS table. And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders.

Please check your email about 5 minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thank you for being a valuable part of CLG!
Have a great week!

CHEMICAL-FREE means produce and pastures grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides. LOCAL means within 80 miles from the market pickup locations (usually much much closer). Do you know someone who grows chemical-free food in the area? Get them in touch with us.
