Manchester Locally Grown market

Our pickup location is across the street from the Manchester City Schools administration building, at

216 East Fort Street, Manchester, TN

If you don’t see a map, click on the address link.

Good morning!

Welcome to this week’s offerings from your online farmers’ market. Everything you see on our website is the “cream of the crop” from local farmers, the best products picked and made with pride especially for YOU! When you place an order with our farms, you know you are supporting your friends and neighbors, most located within 30 miles of Manchester, Tennessee.

Please look around at various categories, since there may be some new things added to the market after I send out this message. Also please be sure to read the section of the page entitled “Important Ordering and Pickup Information.”

Farm News of the Week

Please be sure you notice the change of banner over these farm names!

Deb Wittig of Knottynuffacres will have her bread, both plain and with quinoa, flaxseed, and sesame; and eggs listed on the market once more this week.

Weaver Farms meats have returned to the market, but you already know that from my midweek announcement.

Andra Martens writes:

Sow’s Ear Piggery is happy to return to the market this week. If you haven’t ordered in a while, please check out our newly added cuts: 1"-thick chops, tenderized cutlets, tenderloin, and Boston Butt.

From Linda of Dogwood Valley Greenhouse:

Yes, Dogwood Valley Greenhouse surely did flood this past weekend! We are used to some water in our driveway, because it runs in part alongside a seasonal creek. On occasion we have even been unable to get out of our driveway, but only a couple of other times in the past 30+ years have we had more than a foot of water. The poor daffodils were at the outer bounds of the flooded area, and I spent all the good weather this week removing dirt, debris, and sticks from among their leaves. Only a handful of blooms were damaged, and everything popped right back up as soon as the sun came out. There are still a lot of buds there, and with the cooler weather forecast for the next several days, I’m sure to be able to make bouquets for the Mar 6 delivery. At the rate the weather is staying cool, we might even have some for Mar 13. If you haven’t ordered a bouquet yet, you really should do so this week!

We are also swinging into bloom season in the greenhouse. My workers and I set up a whole greenhouse this week, making it much easier to care for these beauties as they come into bloom. Watch your sequence of bloom in your perennial borders; if you don’t have anything blooming right now, consider adding a few early beauties. Currently blooming: pulmonaria and primrose; with woodland phlox and pincushion plant running close behind. All the colors of coral bells are growing vigorously, and if planted out now, will bloom in your garden within the month.

Hope Harrison of Hope for Health is still on “vacation” after the birth of her child.

Please remember to send us your comments about your favorite products or farms, for publication in a future newsletter. The best advertising is always word of mouth, and our farmers really appreciate your encouragement.

Important Ordering and Pickup Information

Ordering will be open until TUESDAY at 10 pm, and your order will be available for pickup on THURSDAY between 4:00 and 5:30 at the pavilion across from Manchester City Schools administration building, 215 East Fort Street, Manchester.

We can also deliver your order to your home (or other location) on FRIDAY afternoon for a small fee, if it’s more convenient for you. If you prefer to utilize this service, please place an order for it, same as other products, selecting your delivery area. Don’t forget to give us your location address in the comments section of the order. Also please text Linda at (931) 273-9708 for specific arrangements.

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible. Please encourage our local farmers by helping to spread the word about our wonderful market to everyone you know. We offer a great variety of local farm products, and our items will be in your hands in time to plan for the weekend. Wonderful local products are available for ordering from the comfort of your own computer.

More new farmers are considering joining our market, if they can expect enough sales to help pay their transportation costs. Please help us grow the market by sharing this e-mail with your friends and inviting them to give us a try. And if you haven’t ordered from Manchester Locally Grown for a while, please check out our wide variety of offerings this week. Also please let us know if we can improve our selection or scheduling in any way to better suit your needs.

Blessings,
Linda & Michael

Here is the complete list for this week.

CLG:  Opening Bell: Bratwurst, Honey, Coffee, Plants!

Good afternoon!

OK, so here’s the deal: It’s probably too early to set out Tomato and Pepper PLANTS, but…you’ll find some listed this week! I started a variety of seeds for my garden at Cedar Rock Ridge in late January. They’re ready for their new homes, but will need to be kept inside for a couple more weeks. It may be 20 degrees tonight, but it will be mid 60’s at market pickup on Friday! Get a jump start on spring by getting some green in your windows now. Check them out: Brad’s Atomic Grape Tomato, Japanese Eggplant, Shishito Pepper, Brazilian Starfish Pepper, and Blueberry Cherry Tomato Plants!

If you arrived to pickup early on Friday, you found STRAWBERRIES on the extras table! Expect more in about two weeks or so.

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. We have over 700 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

Please check your email a few minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thank you!

Dothan, Alabama:  March 2, 2019 M@D Newsletter

We are open to accept orders.
Orders close Tuesday at 5pm
If you’re wondering about that “M@D” bit, its only about good healthy food!

Market at Dothan uses the word “Sustainable” over “Organic” because you can grow organic without being sustainable, but you cannot be sustainable without utilizing organic practices.

LOT’S HAPPENING!

Friday – Coastal Sharps
Every time Amory brings her sharpening equipment she stays busier and busier! She will be with us on Friday, March 8 and this time she’s bringing her scissor equipment as well. So whether it’s kitchen knives, pocket knives, hunting knives or your favorite pair of fabric scissors she can handle it. If you cannot make it on Friday and want to take advantage of this great opportunity, contact us at marketatdothan.com and we’ll help make arrangements that work for your busy schedule.

Saturday – Spring Farmer’s Market Please note that we’ve changed the date for the May Market to coincide with Spring Open House.

Outside vendors and Market friends will be on site with wonderful products! For our regular customers, you still get first pickins of the Market’s Local, Fresh, Sustainable and Year Round produce as our regular growers will still list and bring extras on Saturday.

MARKET CHITCHAT

An Africa Donation Crate for spring/summer type clothing & shoes for all ages has been placed in the Market Shed. It is teal colored and located on the botton shelf of our bookcase. Feel free to place items in it any time during Dothan Nursery’s regular hours. Children’s books and art supplies are also needed. Smart Doc Virginia Schafer is heading up this effort. You can catch up with her recent trip to the wonderful people these items will be helping on her Facebook page.

Our folks are BUSY getting ready for next week so this newsletter will not have any Grower Notes.

HEALTH TRIVIA

Scientists have been connecting the dots between overall health and outdoor play in children for many years. Dr. Richard Louv was one of the first to recognize Nature Deficit Disorder. Jordan Rubin explained how soil bacteria builds the immune system in The Maker’s Diet. Now a new vocabulary word has surfaced that describes the psychological trauma caused by being disconnected from nature in adults. ”Psychoterratica” has been identified as a real issue and is prevented and treated by spending time outdoors in nature. We’re glad to tell you that your growers do not suffer from this.

Today is Read Across America Day! Who would have thought that reading could be healthy but studies have shown that diving into a book can reduce stress levels by 68 percent. Reading regularly has also been shown to help sharpen your mind, fend off dementia and foster empathy.

For those watching your numbers, there are 22 calories and 4.1 g carbs in 1 cup of cabbage.

59 minutes a week lifting weights will lower your risk of Metabolic Syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions — increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels — that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Lastly, the ban on Triclosan in antimicrobal soaps was finalized by the FDA in 2017 but evidence is growing that it can actually help create bacterial superbugs and interfere with the use of antibiotics. Triclosan is found in everything from body wash to lip gloss to deodorant to household cleaners to mouthwash & toothpaste.

Siloam Springs, AR:  Online Market is Open!

www.siloamsprings.locallygrown.net

It’s March Madness! Raised Rite Poultry is having a sale – 2 Whole Chickens $20 (3-3.5 lb range). This is a great deal and you can use the entire bird and have no waste. Roast them up and then use the carcass to make broth. You can freeze the broth and even freeze the cooked, pulled meat in packages to use for nights when you need to make a quick meal. Chicken tacos, a casserole, or soup.

Dos Locos has some great pork chops, steaks, and ground beef. Payne Farms has eggs and pecans. There is honey, baked goods, and the best all natural, locally made home and personal care products.

Opossum Hollow is taking care of their amazing greens by keeping them under frost blankets during these cold temperatures. This means there will still be greens in the future but there won’t be any this week. Thankful our farmers go the extra mile to take care of things.

Stay warm, have a great week, and see you Saturday!

Spa City Local Farm Market Co-op:  The market is open

The market is open for ordering
Please place your orders before Tuesday 9pm and plan to pick up your order at Emergent Arts this Friday between 3p and 4:30p. If you are unable to pick up your order at this time, please make arrangements to have your order picked up for you.

But remember to scroll all the way down and click to place this order. If you want to order from Arkansas Natural Produce, be sure to do so before Monday at 9pm.

The Spa City Co-op market will only survive and be available if the members use it. We have had had a downturn in orders this winter, even though some of our farmers have managed to provide fresh offerings. Please have a look and consider ordering this market.
