Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Harvest for March 17th

Hello!
I’m opening the Market early today because we are attending The Book of Mormon which starts in a few minutes.

The plan is for Fresh Harvest to offer a wide variety of veggie/herb plants in 4” pots this spring. I’m planting about a dozen different varieties of tomatoes (heirloom, hybrid, cherry, paste). We should also have peppers, several types of basil and a few other plants to make available to you. With anything that I grow, I won’t believe it until I see it. I’ll keep you posted as to when to expect the plants to be ready. If there’s a veggie/herb/flower that you would like us to start, please let us know. I can’t promise that we can do it, but we’ll try.

It won’t be long before we are loaded with veggies, but this isn’t the week. My potato seeds are due to arrive this Wednesday and with a little luck we might be able to plant them this week.

Henosis has added 3 new items that sound rather tasty – Mushroom Soup, Mushroom Risotto and Sweet Potato Biscuits. All are found in the Vegetable Category.

In the Cheese category, Bloomy Rind has a great variety of cheeses and other specialty items.

We have plenty of eggs, granola, honey, and coffee.

With daylight savings time having arrived, pick up will be under the trees unless there is bad weather.

If an item sells out, be sure to write in the Comment section what you would like if more becomes available.

The Hemp Honey has been added to the Market page. If you would like to learn more about CBD, here is a link: https://intellicbd.com/
TruBee’s Hemp Honey is 100% pure raw honey with full spectrum hemp extract. Serving size: 1/2 tsp, 24 servings in a jar

Deliveries will continue to be every other week. The next delivery will be Wednesday, April 3rd. You have until Tuesday night to place your order.
Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!

If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

Recipes

Thick-Cut Sweet Potato Fries

1/2 cup cornstarch
Kosher salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch-thick wedges, wedges cut in half crosswise
3 cups peanut oil

1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 200 degrees. Set wire rack in rimmed baking sheet. Whisk cornstarch and 1/2 cup cold water together in large bowl. 2. Bring 2 quarts water, 1/4 cup salt, and baking soda to boil in Dutch oven. Add potatoes and return to boil. Reduce heat to simmer and cook until exteriors turn slightly mushy (centers will remain firm), 3 to 5 minutes. Whisk cornstarch slurry to recombine. Using wire skimmer or slotted spoon, transfer potatoes to bowl with slurry. 3. Using rubber spatula, fold potatoes with slurry until slurry turns light orange, thickens to paste, and clings to potatoes. 4. Heat oil in 12-inch nonstick skillet over high heat to 325 degrees. Using tongs, carefully add one third of potatoes to oil, making sure that potatoes aren’t touching one another. Fry until crispy and lightly browned, 7 to 10 minutes, using tongs to flip potatoes halfway through frying (adjust heat as necessary to maintain oil temperature between 280 and 300 degrees). Using wire skimmer or slotted spoon, transfer fries to prepared wire rack (fries that stick together can be separated with tongs or forks). Season with salt to taste and transfer to oven to keep warm. Return oil to 325 degrees and repeat in 2 more batches with remaining potatoes. Serve immediately.

CLG:  Opening Bell: Spinach, Cheese, Pork, Plants!

Good afternoon!

Spring has sprung! I’m getting excellent reports from our growers about early crops ready to be harvested. Spinach, onions, asparagus, lettuce, radishes, turnips, etc. The mild winter and abundant rain means lots of local vegetables will be available sooner than last year. Early shoppers also saw the first cabbage of the year on the extra table Friday!

This week you will also find several options for cut flower arrangements from Bell Urban Farm. Get one for yourself, and one to give to a neighbor or loved one. They will Be beautiful for well over a week.

Save a bundle on a 25 pound box of eggs from Drewry Orchards this week. It is literally a box with 25 pounds of fresh eggs. A pound of eggs is between six and 10 eggs so this is over 200 fresh eggs. Share some with your family and neighbors and they’ll love you forever. ! We have egg cartons so you can package them into dozens right at the market. Deviled eggs, boiled eggs, omelettes, quiche, fried eggs, poundcake. The possibilities are endless!

Several varieties of cheese are now available under the dairy section.

At Cedar Rock Ridge this week, I divided my scarlet Beebalm, horseradish, and comfrey plants, so they are now available well-rooted and ready to grow in your garden. In about two weeks, we will have orange marigolds, yellow marigolds, and vinca plants in 4-packs available. Marigolds placed around your garden attract pollinators and deter pests. With marigolds, more is better. Lemongrass plants will also be ready soon!

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. We have over 740 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

Please check your email a few minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thank you!

Champaign, OH:  Astral Weeks

To be born again
In another world
In another time
In another place
So far away…
(Astral Weeks-Van Morrison)

Quite possibly one of my favorite Van Morrison’s songs/albums. And, one of my favorite Irish singer/songwriters. How very fitting, on this day of the Irish, as this girl, who has one side of her family, hailing from Galway, to be listening to, today…

And, on this very sunshine, luck of the Irish kind of day, why not take a bit of time to look through all of the products that we have to offer? Why not place your weekly order, or learn how easy it is to place an order for the very first time.

We are very close to celebrating our 7th year in existence, and, I couldn’t be more proud of this market, of our large variety of products, and the strength of our many vendors. But, through it all, we are only as strong as our ordering customer base, of which we are forever grateful!!

We’ve added so much, just for you, and we hope to see your smiling faces, this Thursday, at market pick up…

When Irish Eyes Are Smiling…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Good evening, and welcome to another edition of The Wednesday Market’s weekly blog.

The Market is open for orders. Please place your order by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up between 3 and 6 p.m. Wednesday. See the website for this week’s product offerings. Here is the link: https://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

How much do you know about our Market? Here are some fast facts:

First day: January 26, 2011

Number of local producers who list products each week to sell through our market: 15 or more

Our founders: Anna Evans and Brenda Fayard

Types of products sold: everything from fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry, dairy, eggs, baked goods, prepared foods, honey, and olive oil to seeds, live plants, health and beauty aids, yarns, emu egg shells, laundry detergent, and bee traps!

Number of staff to run the Market each week: 5, all of whom are VOLUNTEERS!

Why do 5 people willingly and freely share their time and energy each week to open The Wednesday Market? It’s simple – because we believe in locally grown agriculture. Our motto is “know your farmer, know your food.” And “no farmer, no food”! We encourage you to try as many of the items that our farmers and producers offer to you each week. You just might find something you never knew you liked! And, if you need more food for thought, read this article:

10 Reasons to Support Farmers Markets from https://cuesa.org/learn/10-reasons-support-farmers-markets

From savoring produce at the peak of freshness to meeting the people who grow your food, there are countless reasons to support farmers markets. Here are just a few!

1. Taste Real Flavors
The fruits and vegetables you buy at the farmers market are the freshest and tastiest available. Fruits are allowed to ripen fully in the field and are brought directly to you—no long-distance shipping, no gassing to simulate the ripening process, no sitting for weeks in storage. This food is as real as it gets—fresh from the farm.

2. Enjoy the Season
The food you buy at the farmers market is seasonal. It is fresh and delicious and reflects the truest flavors. Shopping and cooking from the farmers market helps you to reconnect with the cycles of nature in our region. As you look forward to asparagus in spring, savor sweet corn in summer, or bake pumpkins in autumn, you reconnect with the earth, the weather, and the turning of the year.

3. Support Family Farmers
Family farmers need your support, now that large agribusiness dominates food production in the U.S. Small family farms have a hard time competing in the food marketplace. Buying directly from farmers gives them a better return for their produce and gives them a fighting chance in today’s globalized economy.

4. Protect the Environment
Food in the U.S. travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to your plate. All this shipping uses large amounts of natural resources (especially fossil fuels), contributes to pollution, and creates trash with extra packaging. Conventional agriculture also uses many more resources than sustainable agriculture and pollutes water, land, and air with toxic agricultural by-products. Food at the farmers market is transported shorter distances and is generally grown using methods that minimize the impact on the earth.

5. Nourish Yourself
Much food found in grocery stores is highly processed and grown using pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and genetic modification. Some of it has been irradiated, waxed, or gassed in transit. These practices may have negative effects on human health. In contrast, most food found at the farmers market is minimally processed, and many of our farmers go to great lengths to grow the most nutritious produce possible by using sustainable techniques, picking produce right before the market, and growing heirloom varieties.

6. Discover the Spice of Life: Variety
At the farmers market you find an amazing array of produce that you don’t see in your average supermarket: red carrots, a rainbow of heirloom tomatoes, purple cauliflower, stinging nettles, green garlic, watermelon radishes, quail eggs, maitake mushrooms, and much, much more. It is a wonderful opportunity to savor the biodiversity of our planet.

7. Promote Humane Treatment of Animals
At the farmers market, you can find meats, cheeses, and eggs from animals that have been raised without hormones or antibiotics, who have grazed on green grass and eaten natural diets, and who have been spared the cramped and unnatural living conditions of feedlots and cages that are typical of animal agriculture.

8. Know Where Your Food Comes From
A regular trip to a farmers market is one of the best ways to connect with where your food comes from. Meeting and talking to farmers and food artisans is a great opportunity to learn more about how and where food is produced.

9. Learn Cooking Tips, Recipes, and Meal Ideas
Few grocery store cashiers or produce stockers will give you tips on how to cook the ingredients you buy, but farmers, ranchers, and artisans at the farmers market are often passionate cooks with plenty of free advice about how to cook the foods they are selling. You can also attend free seasonal cooking demonstrations by leading Bay Area chefs and evening classes on food preservation and other kitchen skills.

10. Connect with Your Community
Wouldn’t you rather stroll amidst outdoor stalls of fresh produce on a sunny day than roll your cart around a grocery store with artificial lights and piped in music? Coming to the farmers market makes shopping a pleasure rather than a chore. The farmers market is a community hub—a place to meet up with your friends, bring your children, or just get a taste of small-town life in the midst of our wonderful big city.

Are you inspired? We certainly hope so! Place your order now, and we’ll see you on Wednesday.

Thanks,

Beverly

We are open to accept orders.

If you’re wondering about that “M@D” bit, its only about good healthy food!
Market at Dothan uses the word “Sustainable” over “Organic” because you can grow organic without being sustainable, but you cannot be sustainable without utilizing organic practices.

ROZ’S RAMBLINGS

Pardon us for being a bit late this week. And perhaps a bit scruffy! It’s not often the Hortons have Canadian relatives visit and today was one of those heaven sent opportunities to introduce our nieces to one of their childhood heroes. It’s a little early but with any luck I can share photos on our facebook page soon.

Hopefully Alabama will soon have more local Farmer’s Markets! ASAN, the Alabama Sustainable Agriculture Network has recently launched an initiative to train local directors. We were contacted early on, however ASAN was more focused on traditional tent markets than the online “modified CSA” (as state ag calls us) model we use. While we’re not sure if they plan to create sustainable only markets, Market at Dothan has offered to assist any willing to create the Locally Grown platform we use.

We’ve shared a bit in the past about the connection between radical animal rights proponents and farming. The short version is that PETA and the Humane Society of the US want to eliminate meat consumption entireley. “Meatless Monday” is is a product of this effort. This is good news for grain & vegetable farmers but not for meat farmers. Here at Market at Dothan we support the ability of the individual consumer to choose the foods best for them and support consumer education to that end. The problem is that neither of these entities are being truthful in their promotions. No hyperlink this time, but you may read about the latest nonsense here: https://www.thelunaticfarmer.com/blog/3/14/2019/schools-promoting-lies#comments-5c8a3e8341920299216652e2=

THIS WEEK’S GROWER NOTES

We have the best Growers in the Wiregrass! Please learn more about them on our Grower Page.

SMART DOC RESOURCES Hi From SmartDocs, Spring is in the air but the weather is still crazy.  28 one day and 78 the next but at least we have sunshine and getting ready for the good farming weather.  Great day at the market event today. I know there are many other events going on today so we thank you all that came out to see us.  We made a lot of new friends and got to talk about our African mission. It ties in nicely with our home project – hydroponics as we are building hydroponic units(and Terrace gardens) in Gambia , Africa.  I will be returning in April (I think) to hopefully finish up on our site compound. Check us out on fb at Earth Farm Gambia. We are doing research on using fish hydrostat and have an engineer from England getting the formula together.  It is our goal to utilize the resources in this very poor country to feed these people and make gardening a sustainable and profitable venture. Therefore you will see new products from us including Shea Butter Better Cream made with FRESH (snuck in my suitcase) shea butter from Mali . About 10% of the better butter cream is the finest oils to make a creamy,  all purpose medicinal cream and moisturizing lotion. We also have a glycerine and shea butter soap with coconut essential oils (smells awesome) that can be used for cleaning, moisturizing and hair conditioner. All profits go to Earth Farm Gambia. There is a collection bin in the shed at Dothan Nurseries for donations (we ship quarterly) . Smart Docs is requesting good used clothes (especially children), hygiene products, art supplies (we also work with Art Farm Gambia) and school supplies. (children’s books, paper, pencils) to send to Gambia. We thank you for your help!

On the homefront we are enlarging our hydro unit and setting up some research as well.  We are back this week with some yummy produce.

The Yummy Pea Shoot: These foods are incredible sources of antioxidants, phytonutrients, enzymes, minerals and vitamins. They help to alkalize your body, support your immune system and ensure proper cell regeneration.Seven times more vitamin C than blueberries.   Four time more vit A than tomatoes and eight times more folate than bean sprouts. Up to 69% of high quality bioavailable protein. Delicious in soups, salads, as a snack, in a stir fry, as a side dish, on a sandwich, as a garnish and in a smoothie.

AVALON FARMS:

The plan was for these handsome guys to be going to “freezer camp” this weekend, but when I weighed a few they just weren’t quite ready yet. They should be ready next week and possibly listed in the market. There are 50 of these and another group waiting to take possession of this chicken tractor.

It was fun seeing old friends and making new friends at the physical market set-up last Saturday. The response was great and I appreciated the opportunity to explain the benefits of pastured poultry.
Growing News:

  • Sugar Snap Peas and Green Arrow English Peas are loving these crazy spring days. There will be 4 to 6 more weeks before they are ready.
  • Radishes and spinach are coming along, if slowly.
  • Senposai (everyone’s new favorite green) and tatsoi plantings are coming along as well.
  • First plantings of green beans, cucumbers and squashes are going in now.
