Stones River Market:  Market is OPEN -- Spring has arrived!

Market is back open with another week of great items. Was up at 1:30AM frantically moving plants back into the greenhouse! I was not expecting rain until this afternoon, I was wrong! These are baby plants having their first night out not strong enough I thought being rained on, I was wrong again! We’ve been been market farming 16 years and learn something new every year. They were all standing up strong and happy, nature is wonderful at 1:30AM.

Did a ‘walk about’ this morning, walnut tree and oak tree are just beginning to bud out…to us that means we will not have any more damaging frost, I could be wrong again! Once I see low temperature in the 40-50’s for a week, more than likely planting season has begun. Time to start really getting our hands dirty, I’m so excited this year about our farm and our market! Looking forward to what are Growers will have available and hopefully a couple new Growers joining us soon.

Few new items added to the market this week and some of the same wonderful items are available. Enjoy shopping and we will see you Wednesday on “The Porch”.

No News From Our Growers this week!

See you “On the Porch” at Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday April 10th from 5:00 – 6:30pm, please contact me if you are unable to make delivery or are running late, please phone, email or text me so we can make arrangements to get your order to you.

Dothan, Alabama:  April 6, 2019 M@D Newsletter

We are open to accept orders.
Orders close Tuesday at 5pm
If you’re wondering about that “M@D” bit, its only about good healthy food!
Market at Dothan uses the word “Sustainable” over “Organic” because you can grow organic without being sustainable, but you cannot be sustainable without utilizing organic practices.

NEXT SATURDAY!

Don’t forget that the following Saturday the first ever GET GREEN ALABAMA event will be taking place at Dothan Nurseries. Market at Dothan will be there along with some of our regular vendors. We hope to see you there!

RADISHES

Those of you who picked up in Dothan last week may have seen these lovelies from Avalon Farms.

Radishes are one of those vegetables that you either like . . or don’t. Many of us fall in the don’t category. Kathy (of Kathy’s Churpers) nas been sharing on Fridays that radishes are not limited to spring salads and cute culinary roses, but may in fact be roasted and seasoned like other root vegetabes. A quick internet search confirmed that along with many recipes for both roots and the greens. So here’s to trying something different!

Top Left: Braised Radishes with Shallots & Bacon
Top Right: Cinnamon Sugar Radish Chips
Bottom Left: Radish Leaf Pesto
Bottom Right: Grilled Radishes with Brown Butter, Thyme, and Sea Salt

MARKET CHITCHAT

Help Solve a Market Mystery – On Friday two bags of Mayim’s Spring Salad Mix seems to have vanished into thin air. Nobody is going hungry because of it but we are very curious about what happened to them. If they accidentally wound up in your bag please keep them, but do let us know so that we can improve our service going forward. Many Thanks!

Two of our Market family have completed the Beginner Beekeeping Course offered annually by Wiregrass Beekeepers Association. Both Clifford Judge (Smart Doc Resources) and Patty Basford have earned their . . .wings, stings . . . we’re not sure, but they completed and we’re proud of them as it takes a special kind of person to take that plunge.

New & Relisted Products

  • Soothing Salve from Mayim Farms
  • UTI Stone Formula from Mayim Farms
  • Hawthorne Berry Tincture from Mayim Farms

THIS WEEK’S GROWER NOTES

We have the best Growers in the Wiregrass! Please learn more about them on our Grower Page.

AVALON FARMS:

What a crazy time of year it is! And what a crazy year for weather! (Over here in Kinston, I’ve actually had frost on the ground twice in the last 2 weeks!! Scared me LOL)

Succession planting allows you to have a continuous supply of quality vegetables available. To do that I have planned to plant squash successions every 3 to 4 weeks. Sounds simple enough, right? In reality the 5 rows of squash planted 3 weeks ago have just come up. I’m assuming it is due to the unusually cool temps. Then, right on schedule, I planted 7 more rows this week. 50 days from now there should be squash everywhere. Ha Ha

Been working on root crop production. So proud of my raised beds of carrots. Finally, good germination. Woo Hoo Tried an old trick I’d heard of and covered the beds with burlap bags. Watered twice a day. And surprise, baby carrot plants!

Other root crops currently available and coming soon: red radishes, Easter egg radish assortment, watermelon radishes, just right turnips, salad turnips, red potatoes and 2 kinds of fingerlings.

Smart Doc Resources Virginia is headed back to Africa for a few more weeks. If you have any summer clothing or children’s arts supplies to donate please take it to the donation box at the Market Shed ASAP. Microgreens will continue to be on the Market as Clifford will be holding down the fort here in Dothan in her absence.

Farm News of the Week

At Frontier Family Farms this week, everyone loaned a hand – er, in some cases, paw – to get all the vegetable seeds sown. Morris was a great help!

Meanwhile, Hefty kept his eye on the chicks under their heat lamps. There will be lots of eggs this fall!

Hope Harrison of Hope for Health is still on “vacation” after the birth of her child.

Terra Hills Natural Products and Casey Family Farm products will both be unavailable for several more weeks.

Don’t forget about Wayne Diller’s special on whole frozen chickens. Get yours while they last!

Add some spring color to your garden! The weather is great for planting perennials and shrubs, but please don’t buy your tomatoes or peppers yet! (We will have those in about three weeks.)

Dwarf Coreopsis, Dianthus; Japanese Painted Fern, Foam Flower; Woodland Phlox, Pincushion Plant.

Please remember to send us your comments about your favorite products or farms, for publication in a future newsletter. The best advertising is always word of mouth, and our farmers really appreciate your encouragement.

Important Ordering and Pickup Information

Ordering will be open until TUESDAY at 10 pm, and your order will be available for pickup at your choice of the following:

  • Thursday afternoon between 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.* under the big pavilion on Fort Street with signs that say “Coffee County Farmers Market.” It’s behind the Farm Bureau building on Main Street, and across the street from the Manchester City Schools administration building, 215 East Fort St, Manchester.
  • Or on Fridays between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. inside “Nature’s Elite”, next to Dunham’s Sporting Goods, in the Cherokee Square Shopping Center on North Jackson Street in Tullahoma.

We can also deliver your order to your home (or other location) on FRIDAY afternoon for a small fee, if it’s more convenient for you. If you prefer to utilize this service, please place an order for it, same as other products, selecting your delivery area. Don’t forget to give us your location address in the comments section of the order. Also please text Linda at (931) 273-9708 for specific arrangements.

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible. Please encourage our local farmers by helping to spread the word about our wonderful market to everyone you know. We offer a great variety of local farm products, and our items will be in your hands in time to plan for the weekend. Wonderful local products are available for ordering from the comfort of your own computer.

More new farmers are considering joining our market, if they can expect enough sales to help pay their transportation costs. Please help us grow the market by sharing this e-mail with your friends and inviting them to give us a try. And if you haven’t ordered from Manchester Locally Grown for a while, please check out our wide variety of offerings this week. Also please let us know if we can improve our selection or scheduling in any way to better suit your needs.

Blessings,
Linda & Michael
