Market News
Hello!
We’re running a little late tonight due to the Hershberger’s summer road trip this week to visit some of their family up north. As I was waiting for his phone call with his items for me to list on the Market, my strange mind starting thinking about Lou Reed’s song Waiting for My Man. The song and the Hershbergers’ delay in getting home have nothing in common, but that’s what I was humming.
When I wrote this last week, I paused and thought that this could jinx the lettuce supply, but I wrote it anyway. “It’s unusual to have tasty, local lettuce available in mid-summer. Both Pig & Leaf Farm and RnR Farm have figured out a way to keep the delicious lettuce growing in the heat.” This week we have no lettuce, but it should be returning very soon.
We only have 50 pints of blueberries. I imagine that this is the last week. Bloomy Rind has Cultured Maple Butter. The word “butter” always gets my attention. I have a reputation for my love of butter.
I use to be a flower grower years ago, but I gave it up when Tally joined Fresh Harvest. My favorite flower to grow was Lisianthus. It’s a beautiful rose-like flower, but the reason I liked it was because it is so long lasting. This week Pig and Leaf Farm has bouquets of several different colors. Also, Evelyn Raines has some beautiful zinnias available. They are a mix of colors and are sold by the stem for a $1 each.
The Peach Truck has freestone peaches this week. They will be set up next to us throughout the peach season.
Dozen Bakery cookies and breads, eggs, granola, honey, and coffee are in abundance.
Hemp Honey and Sorghum are available under Honey.
You have until Tuesday night to place your order.
Thanks for your support, and I will see you on Wednesday!
If you need to text me, my number is 615-838-0428.

Spa City Local Farm Market Co-op: The site should now be working correctly
There are no meat vendors listing this market as on vacation or only deliver for the first market of the month.
The site had a couple of other oddities yesterday. If you have any problem ordering an item that shows being available, not sold out, let me know.

CLG: Opening Bell: Chicken, Pork, Potatoes, Peppers!
Good afternoon!
If I had to title this post, it might be: the frailty of the farm. Let me explain: one of our growers lost six hens to a varmint on Friday, probably a raccoon. Those birds produced three dozen eggs per week. It will take 6 months or more to replace these egg-layers by ordering new chicks. Sometimes it seems the cards are stacked against chicken farmers. I have found that every critter in the woods wants to eat a chicken so we have to be on high alert all the time they are foraging. Saturday afternoon, my dog, Jackie, was bit by a snake. I didn’t see the snake, but I’m pretty sure it was a hognose snake since I had seen one in the area previously. We called a vet and did some online research for treatment, and I’m happy to report that as of right now, Jackie is doing fine. Slow, but alert and walking, eating, and drinking. I am sure she will be back to guarding her chickens in a few days.
If you are reading this, congratulations! You made it through the excessive heat and can now enjoy pleasant temps this week. Tending to animals and gardens when it’s very hot takes planning and determination. Thanks to our Growers for facing the challenge and keeping production up for us.
Are you planning to watch the 2 debates coming up on July 30 and July 31? If so, how about making some party foods to enjoy, like jalapeno popppers! This year our jalapenos have great jalapeno flavor, and a nice amount of heat. Stuff with cream cheese and wrap with bacon, or stuff with sausage and cheddar cheese. Bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
We have a good variety of vegetables in season now: potatoes, okra, tomatoes, peppers…
Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. We have over 650 items available now!
Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!
And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)
The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:
