Foothills Market:  The Market is Open!

Foothills Market is open for another week of providing you with options for fresh, locally-grown food!

If you notice that quantities of certain items (like the meats) are lower than in the past, it’s because our growers are beginning to run out of supplies. Unlike grocery stores, we don’t have a (seemingly) endless supply of product that is refilled each week from a distributor. Our products come directly from our fields and barns, and when they are gone from the market, they are gone until we can raise more. In the case of the meats, there is an additional factor to consider – we have to make an appointment with a USDA-inspected facility to process the meat before we can put it up for sale. Currently, no appointments are available because the processors are booked into 2021. Yes, next year! Growers were able to snag an appointment or two for the remainder of this year, and when more meat is available on the market, we will be sure to let everyone know.

For the time being, we still do have offerings of meat, and Sheepy Hollow is expecting to add more lamb soon. Our offerings of vegetables are also starting to pick up, both in number and variety. Looks like a good time to add more vegetables to your menu!

(I’m not trying to induce panic-buying; buy what you need, but leave some for others. Let’s take care of each other in our community.)

Browse the market between now and 5:00 p.m. Wednesday. Fill your cart, and be sure to press the “Place your order” button to complete the ordering process. We’ll have your order ready for pickup on Thursday between 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Eat something fresh this week!

Berea Gardens:  Market Open

I have lived through droughts in the far west, and one of the reasons we decided to settle here is because there is an abundance of water for farming. It would be easy to complain this week, but I will hold y tongue. This is by far preferable to the other extreme!

A new item this week is our Thunderhead Cabbage. This is grown in a high tunnel and is tender and sweet.

Tom, Kenny and Melody will be here again this week and we look forward to seeing you.

Blessings,
Bob and Lynnita

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #13

Dear CSA-ers,

This week’s Preassembled Bag will contain Garlic Scapes, Carrots, Black Radishes, Muir Head Lettuce, Spring Mix, Cilantro and Kale. Orders may now be placed on the online market at: https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

The long cool Spring finally seems to be giving way to warmer weather. Days above 80 mean that its safe to put plants of more tropical origin in the ground. This includes our Malabar Spinach, as well as some new things we are trying out, edible hibiscus, ginger, and turmeric. Look forward to all of those later this year. Summer plants are very much beginning to come into their own. We are very close to zucchini, cucumbers, and tomatoes.

Murray’s Farmers’ Market officially began this Saturday, and despite all the additional precautions mandated, Hannah reported that there was a great turn out. Paducah Farmers’ Market is still set to open June 6, and we will be looking forward to that too. Markets are a good opportunity for us to sell any overproduction of vegetables that don’t go into our CSA. By participating in CSA, you are getting the “first-fruits” delivered to your door. We always try to make sure you are getting our top quality produce.

This week’s featured vegetable is the striking Black Radish! Sometimes called the Spanish Black Radish or Schwarzer Runder Radish, this variety is a true heirloom. Depicted in ancient Egypt and documented as a staple of European cuisine during the 1500s, the Black Radish had become something of a “forgotten variety” by the 20th century. Lately, there has been rekindled interest in this unique variety for a number of reasons. The charcoal exterior and bright white interior is unique among vegetables. It is a dense fleshed radish, well suited to roasting, soups, pickling, or slivered on charcuterie boards. Be aware that this is a naturally spicy variety of radish. The spicy taste is caused by protective compounds called “glucoraphanins” that defends the plant from insects. In humans, these compounds are being studied for their action against certain cancers and dementia. We are excited to be offering such a distinct vegetable and hope that you will enjoy it.

As always, we thank you for being a part of our community and supporting our farm through CSA. We are always striving to make the farm and its services the best they can be. You are helping us achieve those goals each week. We hope that in some way, we are helping you and your loved ones to achieve your goals as well!

Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

CLG:  Opening Bell: Salad Mix, Potatoes, Cabbage, Honey!

Good afternoon!
We saw some blueberries and zucchini on the extras table Friday. The weather forecast has lots of rain this week, so these and other vegetables may be slow in coming, but they’re looking very good. The organic garlic has been mostly dug and is drying for another week.

Our market will continue to meet in the lobby every Friday. Our volunteers will be wearing masks. Your order can be brought to your car in the parking lot by one of our dedicated volunteers. Just call or text me when you are parked, and we will bring your order to your vehicle. 501-339-1039.

Let’s do this again: Authentic Tamales!
Pork, chicken or jalapeño & cheese.
Five for $7.
At market this Friday, May 29th.
Text me your order.
501–339-1039

Our growers are doing everything they can to offer as much as they can at the market. Beef, chicken and pork are in short supply, but we expect to have more by next week.

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Four instance, type in the word “sale” and see what pops up. We have almost 500 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

News from Our Growers:

Trinity Rose Oberhasli Dairy Goats: One of our most requested products is back online this week…this week we will have Chevre Cheese and Garlic & Dill Cheese available this week. Special request, please return any of the 1/2 gallon jars you may have received when you purchased milk from us….please!

Farrar Farm LLC: We have a new item this week. Teres Major Steaks! They are tender and flavorful and very economical, also great on the grill!

Carole’s Herbs (CS3 Farm): We have delicious microgreens, farmed and foraged salad greens, and gourmet herbal mustard.

Want to make sure your salad has some texture and taste? Add some microgreens. Delicious sunflower and speckled pea shoot micros will add nutrition to your smoothie, complement or replace your fresh lettuce salad, or garnish a vegetable or meat dish of your choice.

Remember foraged greens? Now we have Farmed and Foraged greens. This blend is a great tame & wild hybrid salad complement or substitute, it’s awesome on sandwiches, and it is quite delicious topping a burger or other sandwich.

We also (finally) have a new batch of our Scarborough Fair Mustard. The herbs include parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme, and they give just about any sandwich, salad, or meat/vegetable dish a touch of heat backed by a delicious whole mouth wow.

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: We have restocked several varieties of tomato plants, just a few of each. When these are gone, I doubt if I will be able to restock. Most of the herbs are large enough to join your garden, and there will be a couple more added in the near future. If you need a particular herb, let me know and I’ll try to find it.

The astilbes are beginning to bloom in shade and part shade; the daylilies and Shasta daisies in sun and part sun. The ferns are finally getting large enough to be added to your garden, and I’ve included several varieties on the market. They, along with the foam flower and hostas, will really brighten your shady areas. The green sedum is now flowering, and its cheerful yellow star-shaped flowers will enhance the more sunny areas of a garden.

I have just one more Lettuce Bowl, and won’t be making any more this spring. This beautiful and tasty “living salad” can be yours if you act quickly!

Please note that I will be updating my quantities available of perennials and herb plants on Monday morning. If you’re looking for something in particular, please check back then.

Flying S Farms: Unfortunate news about our popular 7-Grain Sour Dough Bread, we unable to obtain the 7 grain berries from Montana Wheat Co. they are no longer making the grain mix! I will continue to look for another supplier.

Yes, I will keep trying to get our Jams and Jellies back on the market when we have 36 hours in a day haha!
Hang in there with me, they will be back I promise.

Look forward seeing you “At the Curb" of Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday May 27th from 5:00 – 6:30pm, please contact me if you are unable to make delivery or are running late, please phone, email or text me so we can make arrangements to get your order to you.
