Market News

Holiday markets are starting to pop up around town, and Flagpole has released their market roundup here: https://flagpole.com/topstory/2021/12/01/flagpoles-2021-holiday-market-roundup-find-local-artists-at-over-40-craft-fairs-and-studio-sales/. You’ve already demonstrated your commitment to buy some of your food from local farmers. Giving gifts made from local artisans is just as important, and can be even more rewarding!

If you missed my big announcement that ALG is closing down for good on December 23, you can read all about it here: https://athens.locallygrown.net/weblog/view/45988. I really appreciate all the kind words y’all have said in emails and in person. It’s been an amazing twenty years, and I’ll miss you all after these three weeks!

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you at our market’s home on Tallassee Road!

We are still getting new customers every week (and we love seeing new faces!) so for all of you you can find a detailed run-down of how Thursdays go on our website here: https://athens.locallygrown.net/faq#7

Other Area Farmers Markets

If ALG doesn’t have everything you need, please support our growers at the other markets that are now back up and running, or at their own locations. The Comerian takes online orders for Saturday pickup at the bakery here: https://www.thecomerian.com/online-ordering. The Athens Farmers Market is holding their Saturday market once again in Bishop Park and Wednesdays at Creature Comforts. They’re still operating under pandemic rules, so you’ll want to read up on all the changes on their website, http://athensfarmersmarket.net. The West Broad Farmers Market is back, holding a drive through market just like us (and using my software too, so it’ll be nice and familiar). You can join them at https://wbfm.locallygrown.net. The Saturday market in Comer has also returned. They’re small, but sometimes an early Saturday drive to Comer is just what the soul needs. And of course Collective Harvest is going strong over at https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Monroe Farmers Market:  Monroe online market is open!

Hi everyone!

I am writing this entry to let you know that Monroe will once again have an online market. In the past, there were 2 online markets running, which was confusing.
We are going to merge the 2 markets into 1 for Monroe and the surrounding areas.

Our ordering window opens on Saturdays at 12pm and will close on Tuesdays at 5pm. So our customers and neighbors could have a mid-week option and for those who cannot make it to the weekend markets, we will have our pick ups on Thursday evenings, 4pm-6pm in Downtown Monroe.

If you would like to check out the market, go to monroe.locallygrown.net. This market is different from the one that was used in the past. If you would like to place an order or receive weekly emails, you can sign up for your free account to get started.

Hope to see you at the market!

Hi Friends,

The page is open for accepting this week’s orders. Lynnita is making some Gingerbread Muffins for Wednesday and says she will make some Bundt Gingerbread when we get closer to Christmas, so you might want to try some for a sample.

Had a great time last week with our indoor market. Remember to pull around to the back and masks are required inside. Melody and Kenny will be here with their offerings too.

Blessings,
Bob and Lynnita

Champaign, OH:  Christmas Wrapping

Bah! Humbug!
Now that’s too strong
‘Cause it is my favorite holiday
But all this year’s been a busy blur
Don’t think I have the energy
To add to my already mad rush
Just ‘cause it’s ’tis the season
The perfect gift for me would be
Completions and connections left from last year
Ski shop encounter most interesting
Had his number but never the time
Most of ’81 passed along those lines
So deck those halls
Trim those trees
Raise up cups of Christmas cheer
I just need to catch my breath
Christmas by myself this year…
(The Waitresses)

Well, here we are, again, the Christmas songs of my favorite playlists, all bringing back memories, making me smile, making me laugh, and making the Christmas cheer even more fun…

Happy Sunday, lovely local market customers!! I hope you are enjoying your weekend, and I hope you are loving these mild temperatures with the lovely sunshine!

Yesterday, I was invited to set up my vintage frocks and frills, in Yellow Springs, at one of their Holiday Pop Ups, inside Art+Craft. It was SO fun, and it felt so good to dust off the third business that has always been a part of my bag of tricks!! It closed up, at the onset of the 2020 pandemic, so it was nice to take all of my holiday glitz and glam out for a day of selling, and fun.

Yellow Springs was, as usual, alive with the Christmas spirit. People were flooding the sidewalks and streets. Shops were all hustle and bustle, the restaurants full, and the anticipation of their tree lighting was in the air.

It made me look back to my college days, early 80s, racing home after my last final…sleep deprived, food deprived, brain drain. I remember how good it felt to pack, drive, and just blast tunes for the entire three hour drive home.

And, once home, I would quickly unpack, listen to my mother exclaim concerns over my appearance, grab food, visit my grandparents, and then race off to my Christmas job in retail! At the mall! I was a mall rat during Christmas and summer breaks, and it was THE BEST time!!

I worked at the original Casual Corner, and at that particular store, I was the youngest employee, at the time, and the women I worked with…well, they were the early fashionistas I wanted to be! Christmas excitement was everywhere, all of my friends were home from college, and many working the mall, as well.

And…this song. You could not enter a shop, back then, without this song playing. To me, it’s the greatest, motivating, Christmas song, ever.

It would play in the bars, after work, while meeting up with pals. It played while I was doing my own Christmas shopping, and it played on the Christmas loop of music, at Casual Corner. I LOVED it all.

Yesterday reminded me of that old frenzy of Christmas cheer. Which also reminded me of this market, and the holiday cheer that we offer, in all of our products, and in our general mood, when you pick up your December orders.

Go ahead…blast this song while ordering, today, and just try not to groove around, all day…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

You will find that my goodies look and taste like what you remember when your Grandmother baked years ago. I use real butter and sugar, fresh eggs and cream in my bakes just the way I was taught so many years ago. My secret ingredient is the same as my own Grandmother’s was – the love I put into it!

Periwinkle and Pine Co.: I make beautiful handmade wreaths, bouquets, and decor using high quality faux florals and greenery.

I do everything from managing the hives to harvesting the honey and labeling the jars. My plan is to continue to expand my apiary each year to increase inventory as return and new customers increase. Right now it is all liquid honey, but I plan to add cut comb honey next year.
